build two ICF homes that will be on the 2009 BIA Lancaster/
Lebanon Parade of Homes — June 13-21.
If you would like to learn how to build with ICFs, training will take
place at New Holland Concrete on July 14, Oct. 13 & Jan. 12, ‘10.
You will learn the technical aspects of ICF construction with
hands-on interactive training. Registration is required.

When it is hot enough to produce a rapid rate of evaporation of
moisture from the surface of the concrete, problems can occur. It is
important that hot weather be taken into account when planning
concrete projects because of the potential effects on fresh and
recently placed concrete. Higher temperatures tend to accelerate
slump loss and can cause loss of entrained air. Temperature also
affects the setting time of concrete—it will set quicker and require
more rapid finishing. Concrete cured at high temperatures at an
early age will not be as strong at 28 days as the same concrete cured
at temperatures in the range of 70 degree days.
Wind also speeds the evaporation process and can induce early plastic
shrinkage or drying shrinkage cracking. Thermal cracking can result
when evening temperatures drop following a hot day.

Can fiber in concrete replace wire and/or rebar?
Yes, wire and rebar in concrete is used as a crack containment system so when the concrete cracks, the metal system will hold the concrete in place.
Propex, more popularly known as Fibermesh, provides fiber applications—Fibermesh 650—replaces welded wire (6x6 w 2.0/2.0 wire) and light rebar (up
to #4 rebar). Advantages of the fiber system over wire:
1. The fiber is in the full thickness of the pad
2. The wearing surface strength of the concrete pad is increased
3. No labor involved in placing the fiber
4. More economical to use when factoring the cost of labor placing wire or rebar
What is Efflorescence and how do I get rid of it?
A:
Efflorescence is a curse affecting all cement based building materials which includes pavers, brickwork, block work, concrete, grout & tiled areas. The
conditions that create efflorescence are (1) a source of water soluble salts (lime); (2) water moving through the material to carry the salts to the surface; (3) some type of force-either evaporation or hydrostatic pressure-in order for the soluble compounds to move. When the water evaporates, it
leaves the white powder residue behind.

When cleaning brick or masonry walls with a cleaning agent to remove efflorescence, power washing is not recommended as it may do more harm than
good—sometimes pushing the efflorescence back deep into the surface. To remove efflorescence:

Saturate the wall with clean water before applying the cleaning agent.
Leave the cleaning agent mixture on the wall a few minutes & scrub with a stiff brush.
Rinse thoroughly with clean water until ALL cleaning agent is removed.
