From the Heart of the Pastor
Rev. Robert Lynch
Allegan UMC Synergy: The Power of Togetherness
Allegan UMC Synergy is based upon a covenant partnership of shared values and
goals for ministry. Our goals for 2013-2014 are simple: Continue to attract
families with children, develop new leadership and continue to nurture all our
families with the power of togetherness!
The bitter cold and miserable weather has folks across Allegan battling the winter blues. The bitter cold,
dark, wet and overall dreariness sums up winter 2014. It is hard not to go somewhere and hear at least one
person grumbling about the snow, pot holes, cold and lack of sunshine. Because of it, the Winter Blues,
and the more serious depression, known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) are causing many people
to feel a little extra cranky. Some of the main symptoms of seasonal depression include: sadness, low
energy, oversleeping, and social withdrawal. I believe this Pastor and our faith community here at
Allegan UMC may have some of the symptoms of “SAD."
We need a faith to reclaim, restore and ignite Allegan UMC Synergy: The Power of Togetherness! It will
not be long till we can sing “What a wondrous time is spring when all the trees are budding, the birds
begin to sing, the flowers start their blooming. That’s how it is with God’s Love once you've experienced
it; you want to sing, it’s fresh like spring, you want to pass it on.” ("Pass It On")
We know spring will eventually come our way so now is the time to get excited about Allegan UMC
Synergy: the power of togetherness. Some of the ways we can let go of sadness, low energy and social
withdrawal is to reconnect with our church family and church activities.
*NOW IS THE TIME! Auction planned for Saturday, April 26th Fundraiser for our
outreach ministries.
*NOW IS THE TIME! Wednesdays during Lent: Simple Dinner, short program

relationships during Lent lead by Kevin Delaet.
*NOW IS THE TIME! Continue to affirm the importance of children and youth
ministries at Allegan UMC. Celebrate the growth in Sunday School attendance,
growth in membership in all our choirs and worship attendance.
*NOW IS THE TIME! Incorporation of our Youth Intern, Megan Dennis, into the life
of the Allegan UMC!
*NOW IS THE TIME! Choirs planning special Spiritual Music Sunday May 18th.
*NOW IS THE TIME! Continue to be intentional and invitational in our 2014 VBS
Summer Planning.
Lent 2014
Crossroads for the called people of God
Our journey with Jesus into the year 2014 brings us toward many crossroads! Crossroads represent for
each of us moments of decisions, moments when we have had to decide between paths. For each Sunday
in Lent we will focus on the crossroads that Jesus had to face as well as reflect on the crossroads of our
life. Surprisingly, I hope you will see the similarities of our journey with Jesus= own journey to the cross
and Resurrection. As we journey together, I hope that through God’s Grace, you will come to enjoy a
closer walk with Jesus.
Sunday, March 30, 2014 4TH Sunday of Lent: The Crossroad of Forgiveness! Forgiveness versus
Vengeance. Luke 15: 1-3;11-32 tells the beloved story of the returning prodigal son. Our fourth
crossroad invites us to experience the power of forgiveness.
Wednesday, April 2, 2014. Join us for a simple dinner, video clip and brief worship! Bring a friend,
neighbor and the whole family!
Sunday, April 06, 2014 5TH Sunday of Lent: The Crossroad of Loneliness! Generosity versus
Selfishness. Using Matthew 25:31-46 this crossroad invites us to commit ourselves to a life of generosity.
Wednesday, April 9, 2014 Join us for a simple dinner, video clip and brief worship! Bring a friend,
neighbor and the whole family!
Sunday, April 13, 2014 PASSION SUNDAY: The Crossroad of Obedience! Integrity versus
Duplicity. Our third crossroad invites us to be consistent in our decisions. Using Luke 13:1-9, we will
listen to Jesus’ call for integrity.
Thursday, April 17, 2014 Maundy Thursday. Join us for a simple dinner and a reenactment of the Last
Supper.
Sunday, April 20, 2014 EASTER SUNDAY. Using Matthew 28:1-10, Easter resolves the Crossroad
of life and Death!
Sunday, April 27, 2014 1st Sunday after Easter Using John 20:19-31, the Doubting Thomas Story
solves the Crossroad of doubt and faith.
CONCERN FOR SAFETY IN OUR CHURCH BUILDING
It has come to the Pastor’s attention that there have been at various times children playing in the
building unsupervised! Adults may be in one part of the building, but our young folks may be wandering
throughout the rest of our maze-like building. The concern raises two issues. We are a downtown church,
and the reality that we may not know everyone that may enter our building exists. We need to know
where our children are! The second concern is injury. It is great that our children feel comfortable in our
church building, but we have the responsibility to keep them safe!
It seems like our church has had some bad things happen to good people lately.
Cancer is found to have already spread before treatment even begins. A horrific house
fire destroys a family’s home, and all that is standing are a few bricks. How do they
cope? How do we reach out and let them know we are here for them? One thing about
our church family is that we care about our people within and without the walls of our
church. We stand ready to give rides to treatments, prepare meals, and cover them with
our prayers. We stand ready to give aid in providing a place for the displaced family to
stay; we have offerings of furniture and clothes. These folks' lives will never be the
same, but the common bond is that Jesus loves them and He cares. He will place doctors
in their path that can help them through their journey and direct them to seek the best
medical treatment possible for them. He will send folks to help them through the paper
work of insurance companies and help them replace the things that are replaceable as,
sadly, some things can’t be replaced. I, fortunately, have not walked either one of these
folks' path, but I know, and I know it with my whole heart, that if it were me in either one
of these positions my church family would be there. I also know that the God that I know
and love would be with me all the way through whatever circumstances life brings to me.
I know this for a fact as He already has! During Lent Pastor Bob has been talking about
how We are at a Crossroads as the Called People of God and how God does not leave us
isolated and stranded to deal with any crisis in our church. This can be applied to our
lives as we know God does not leave us to deal with the many crises that enter our lives.
He never forgets us nor forsakes us as He holds our hand and gently leads us down the
path before us. I have felt His hand on my life during tough times, and I pray that the
Nielsen and Dunning families feel the warmth of His hand in theirs. God bless you and
yours and lean on Him always.
Dear God,
Two families that we know and love need to lean on you for strength and
guidance as their lives have been torn apart. Please let them feel Your
encircling arms and Your ever present help in time of need. Help us all love
them through the tough times ahead. Amen.
Love, Judy

Mission Committee
BEGINNING HANDBELL CHOIR FORMING
The handbell directors have been discussing the need for a beginning handbell choir at
Allegan UMC. The purpose of a beginning handbell choir is twofold. First, it would
allow people to participate in a music program at church that is designed for a beginning
level ringer. Also, this handbell choir would remain a beginner level group. Second,
this choir would also be open to those people who would like to learn how to ring bells
with the intention of moving up to the Chancel Handbell Choir. For most people, it
would be intimidating to 'jump right in' to a handbell choir that is playing more difficult
music. So, if you have not participated in anything musically since high school, but
would like to incorporate music into your life again, please consider joining the
beginning handbell choir. You need to be able to count to four, hold two bells and have
a fun time! We need a minimum of eight players to make a two-octave choir. Dates and
times will be determined if there is enough interest in forming such a choir. If you are
interested or have any questions, please talk with Norm Pierson or Leslie Lynch.
HANDBELL FUNDRAISER UPDATE
We cannot thank the congregation enough for their overwhelming support of our
fundraiser in October 2013. You probably have noticed the new music we have been
playing recently and that is just the 'tip of the iceberg' of what will be happening
musically at Allegan UMC. We have so many incredible things planned for the handbell
choirs - I say choirs, because we have five handbell choirs now: The Chancel Handbell
Choir; Joyful Noise; Chancel Handbell Quartet; Chancel Handbell Duet; and Four
Gospels Quartet! With five choirs, though, comes the need for more handbell music,
which was made possible through your generous donations.
The fundraiser brought in $2,676. Our goal was $800 to purchase new bell pads so our
bells did not roll when we were playing. Can you imagine the bell choir's surprise when
we received the grand total. The money went a long way for the purchase of many
necessary items. More importantly, your generosity spoke volumes regarding your
appreciation of our handbell programs! Every handbell player works very hard and
dedicates many hours of practice before a piece of music is presented in church.
Therefore, it is nice to be reminded how much all the music programs are enjoyed and
appreciated at Allegan UMC!
We were able to purchase the foam cushions, new tables (some of the old bell tables
were about to break in half and Family Farm and Fleet was very helpful as they reduced
the price of four tables for us), many pairs of new handbell gloves, 12 hand-held
percussion instruments (all choirs will be able to use the instruments), two beautiful
music stands (which give Norm and Tim more room to spread out those really big bells
on the tables), and so much music that it is impossible to list all the titles. As you can
see, we used the donations wisely and have been able to make improvements in many
areas for the handbell choirs.
Thank you again for your generosity and support. We will continue to provide handbell
music to enhance our worship experience and bring Glory to God!
MUSICALLY SPEAKING….
**There are a number of Sundays, before and after summer (yes, we are hard at work
already figuring out music for the fall and Christmas), which all the choirs are working
on music for these special Sundays.
Palm Sunday - will feature Chancel Choir, Chancel Handbell
Choir and Four Gospels Quartet.
Easter - will feature the Children's Choirs, Chancel Choir,
Chancel Handbell Choir, Chancel Bell Quartet and
special Easter Music with Organ, Brass Quartet, Choir
and Bells, and an opening to an Easter Service that
will leave you stunned! You will leave this service
musically feeling that CHRIST HAS RISEN.
Mother's Day - a special performance by the Youth Choirs.
Spiritual Music Sunday - this is a Sunday you do not want to
miss church and bring everyone you
know! This service will be all Spiritual
Music with every choir performing
Spiritual Music. Scripture readings and
narrations about the history of
Spirituals will dot the service.
We will also have a professional singer/musician, Bertha Barbee McNeal (she is in a
touring group called the Velvelettes), at this service. She brings many years of musical
experience and will be working with our choir. Ms. McNeal will also be writing an
arrangement of the spiritual “I'm Gonna Sing When the Spirit Says Sing” for a special
musical presentation, which will include our choirs and bells. Again, you do not want to
miss this service, as we will lift up the history of a uniquely American musical tradition,
the Spiritual, and use it to speak to us today of God's love and mercy!
Summer Special Music - is not set yet, but the Chancel Bell
Quartet will do a Patriotic Medley in
July, Four Gospels Quartet will play
in July and August, and Ireland
Armintrout will do a Handbell Solo,
“How Great Thou Art.”
This is only a musical highlight. The Sundays that were not mentioned in the above
schedule continue with the regular musical schedule. The September newsletter will
highlight the music for the Fall and Christmas.
**Jacque James is beginning the process of putting together Special Music for the
months of June, July, August and part of September. There will be a sign-up poster in
Fellowship Hall beginning in May. We will need many people to commit to a Sunday if
music is to be provided every Sunday this summer. If you have any questions, see
Jacque James.
**In an attempt to raise money for the continued purchase of handbell music for five
choirs, we have come up with an ingenious idea. The next time you are cleaning out
your house, would you please consider donating your clothes or small household items
to the Handbell Choirs. The items will be taken to Aubrey's Closet (downtown Allegan)
to be sold. The Handbell Choirs will then reap a financial benefit, in the form of money,
upon the sale of the items. This is such an easy way to raise money for new handbell
music. So, if you would like to donate to our effort, put the items in the Music Room or
give them to any Handbell Choir Member. Everyone wins! Your house is cleaner, we
are supporting a local Allegan business, and our Handbell Choirs can purchase new
music… doesn't get any better than that! Thank you.
HOUSE FIRE
Tom and Kathy Dunning family lost their home to a fire on March 15. They lost almost
everything. We are having a card shower to help out our church family.
The cards they can use are "No fee" credit cards, Meijer's, Restaurants and Home
Depot. They can also use cash. If you write a check, please make it out to Tom or Kathy
Dunning.
You can turn it into the church office or mail it to Allegan United Methodist Church,
409 Trowbridge St., Allegan, MI 49010
