The teacher places the flashcards on the board. Year 2 pupils already know the New language for Year 1 Recycling / Consolidating language for Year 2 school objects so the teacher can let them say the words. Year 2 pupils are also prompted to use “It’s a…”. o Pupils repeat in different ways (silently, loudly, sadly, happily, etc). The teacher also asks about the colour of each school object. o Disappearing pictures: Pupils say the words one by one. The teacher removes a flashcard and the pupils say the words again in the right order (including the word which has been removed). The teacher gradually removes all the flashcards. o Kim’s game: Pupils close their eyes. The teacher removes one flashcard and pupils are asked to guess which one it is. Year 2 pupils are encouraged to use “It’s a…” when answering. o The teacher tells the pupils to show him/her different things from their pencil cases (e.g. Show me a pencil, show me a blue pencil, etc.) o The teacher writes the names of the school objects on a separate place on the board. Year 2 pupils repeat. • Crazy Match game: The teacher points to a flashcard. Pupils of year 1 say the name of the school object. Pupils of year 2 come out and find the matching word. They need to match the words with the pictures, being careful not to cross the lines. o ‘I spy ‘ game. The teacher gives different ‘I spy….’ challenges for years 1 and 2 (e.g. For years 1: ‘I spy….something yellow’, for year 2: ‘I spy…something beginning with “p”) o Year 1 pupils draw and colour their pencil cases and their contents. Year 2 Introduction and Practice of o The teacher presents ‘Is it a…? Yes, it is/ No, it isn’t.’. He/she holds the flashcards of the classroom objects in a way that pupils can’t see them. The teacher gives an example and writes the sentences on the board. New language for Year 2 o Jazz chant: The teacher introduces a jazz chant: Is it a … Is it a… Is it a pen? Yes, it is. Yes, it is. It’s a pen. Is it a… Is it a… Is it a ruler? No, it isn’t. No, it isn’t. It isn’t a ruler. (The teacher also shows the appropriate objects when saying the jazz chant.) o Pupils say the jazz chant along with the teacher. o Pupils are divided into two groups. They say the jazz chant again with the first group saying the questions and the second the answers. o A pupil comes out and faces the board. The teacher puts a school object in his hand without showing it to him/her. S/he asks the rest of the class “Is it a…” and they reply with “Yes, it is/No, it isn’t”. o Alternatively, the pupils play a game with a ‘magic bag’. The teacher has a paper bag with school items in it. Pupils pick a school item from the bag and another pupil makes guesses to find out what it is. o Find your partner: Pupils write a school object on a piece of paper (Pupils can copy from the board). They then go round the classroom and try to find another pupil that has written the same word. Pupils use “Is it a…?”. o Year 2 pupils are given a handout. They match the school objects with the words and then colour the objects. They can use the words on the board for help. Evaluation: Years 1 and 2 o While pupils are working on their handouts and drawings, the teacher goes round the classroom and checks. She asks pupils to say the name of the school objects and s/he also asks about the colour. o Pass the card: Pupils sit in a circle. The teacher gives out the flashcards to the pupils who pass them round from pupil to pupil while a song is playing on the CD-player/computer. When the music stops, the pupils that have a flashcard take turns to hold it up in a way that the rest of the pupils can’t see it. Pupils of year 2 ask “Is it a…?” whereas pupils of Year 1 respond using ‘it’s a….’ If Year 1 pupils need to make questions, they can only say the school object (e.g. ‘ a book?’) Match.
