Hijinks & Home: Camp Life, and the

Home Front in the Civil War

(M) July 21, 6:30 - 8 p.m.

Stories told through family letters, songs and images from time.

See photos of the day, the letters themselves and lyrics of the choruses projected on a large screen. Presenter

Judy Cook, in costume, will read the letters, play the tunes of the time, and sing songs that were written and sung during the Civil War. The letters are between the Claflins: Gilbert, a

Wisconsin farmer, drafted at the age of 40, and his wife, Esther, keeping the farm going with their two teenaged sons. The songs and tunes include both well-known favorites and unfamiliar gems. The themes are timeless: joy and sorrow, humor, courage and love. Letters, images, and music combine to provide fascinating insight into camp and home life in Middle America of the 1860’s.

Registration begins 6/9/2014.
