Dabbling in ewaste may just be the next gold rush. Electronic machines use so much of gold and silver that their waste would make a profitable business, said experts at a meeting organised by the United Nations University and the Global eSustainability Initiative in Accra, Ghana. Precious metals such as gold have wide use in electronics because they are efficient conductors of electricity.
Gold doesn't corrode, thus providing for uninterrupted supply of current and voltage in connectors, circuits, connecting wires, etc. In fact, experts at the Ghana meeting said that over
320 tons of gold and over 7,500 tons of silver are used annually to make personal computers, cell phones, tablet computers and other new electronic and electrical products worldwide.
Experts from the Bonnbased United Nations University provided a financial estimate that the
'urban mining' of ewaste could generate: $21 billion each year ($16 billion in gold and $5 billion in silver). There is more. At present, barely 15% of these precious metals are recovered from the e waste. The clincher was that ewaste now contains precious metal deposits'' that are 40 to 50 times richer than ores mined from the ground. The UN meet's main focus was on recycling. E waste is emerging as one of the biggest modernday challenges.
Consider India, which is the destinations for many developed countries to ship out their ewaste,
India's ewaste output has jumped eight times in the last seven years, according to the latest annual report of the Indian ministry of environment and forest. As recycling methods for ewaste are poor (the UN meeting said that 50% of the gold in ewaste is lost due to crude dismantling processes in developing countries as compared to 25% in developed countries), they cause environmental pollution.
