Page 4 Volume 8, Issue 6 COMMODORE’S CORNER by Dave Meek What a great start to the season! The month of May always brings lots of excitement with the kids nearing the end of the school year and everyone starting to migrate out to the club for some warm weather activities! The weekend of May 16-18th we hosted our annual regatta, The Corinthian Heritage Cup with over 43 boats racing in several fleets. Great food and cold beverages where enjoyed throughout the weekend with, of course, the Rum Happy Hour and The N’Awlins Gumbo Kings being the highlight of Saturday evening’s party! A big thank you to Michele Ditmer, Tonja Holmes-Moon and all of the members that stepped up to make this fundraiser for our Education Foundation a big success! Congratulations to Kelly Holmes-Moon and Team Bad Moon for winning the J/24 Southwest Championship. This was a qualifying event for the 2015 J/24 Worlds Championship in Germany. Way to go TBM! Memorial weekend kicked off the official start of summer by hosting the Hobie Mid-America’s and North Texas Windriders State Championships. Members enjoyed watching the racing during the weekend, listing to the bands, grilling and the kids testing out the cool waters of the swimming pool. We always enjoy having these two groups at the club! As the kids wrap up the 2013-2014 school year, I would like to remind you that more kids will be in and around the club, please slow down when driving in the parking lot. There is still space available to register your youth sailor for Windward Sailing Camp to be held June 9-13th . Click on the red button on the homepage of the DCYC website for more details. They will have a lifetime of memories made in one week! See you at the club ~ Dave Thanks to Mauri Pro Sailing and DCYC Members Juan & Maia Mauri for their generous donation of sailing smocks, gloves and dinghy boots to our junior sailors! Check out their website at www.mauriprosailing.com for your sailing gear and equipment! Volume 8, Issue 6 Page 5 FROM YOUR FLEET CAPTAIN by Peter Brigaitis Happy June! It has been a busy stretch over the past month as the club hosted two very successful events. temperatures. The Corinthian Heritage Cup was a great event as usual. Even with the low water conditions we had over 40 boats racing. The weather even cooperated with a weekend of good breeze and nice The following weekend we hosted the Hobie MidAmericas which also had great turnout and very good sailing weather. Thanks to everyone who pitched in to make these great events happen! With the big regattas behind us for now, we are beginning the summer racing season. This past Saturday began the Summer Series which will consist of 10 races over 5 days. We have scheduled these races to begin at 6 p.m. on Saturdays, which avoids the worst heat of the day and frequently has us sailing in a nice evening breeze. With 8 races remaining, there is still plenty of opportunity to join in on the fun. We also have the Full Moon Series with the next race scheduled for June 7 starting at 8 p.m. If you have never participated in one of these races, you are missing out on a great time. The race starts shortly before sunset and continues into the evening. Half the fun is trying to spot the marks in the fading light. This is a great opportunity to learn how to use your GPS for navigation around the course. In addition to these series races, we have also scheduled a number of stand-alone, one-day events, beginning with a Single/Double-Handed Race on Father’s Day (June 15th). This event with be a reverse-start, pursuit race approximately 2 hours long. And of course, there are Wednesday evening casual races all summer starting around 6 in the evening. I look forward to seeing everyone on the race course! ~ Peter B Summer Racing at DCYC Volume 8, Issue 6 SUMMER RACING AT DCYC Page 6 Volume 8, Issue 6 Page 7 CORINTHIAN HERITAGE CUP by Michele Ditmer Wow! We had another successful 2014 annual regatta with over $8500 raised for the Dallas Corinthian Educational Foundation! As a result of the donations made to DCEF, we are able to provide all of the boats and equipment used in conjunction with our junior and adult sailing classes as well as support of our UNT Sailing Team! DCEF is a key partner in ensuring the future of the sport of sailing! Hicks kept the club nice and tidy during the weekend and made sure we had plenty of toilet paper! That’s a very important aspect of an event this size! The always fabulous Marie Nuchols did a magnificent job with our social media promotions! Every day, I received a shout out to our sponsors or one of her fabulous on the water shots promoting the event! Our very own little Jessica Hancock, now 26 years old, kept count of all of the money coming and going throughout the event! It’s hard to believe that we have our next generation coming up running regatta’s! I LOVE it! Big kudos to Marie Nuchols and John Pherson for taking some wonderful shots on and off the water to document this great time! Sandra & Chris Osborn for all of your invaluable guidance! A special thank you to Mark Blanchard for overall management of the grounds, to David Patterson, Kelly Holmes & our to our very much appreciated, race committee for excellent race management. Finally, I want to thank my friend and co-chair Tonja Holmes. We have had tireless meetings, emails, texts over the past months to pull it together! Could not do it without you girl! Last but certainly not least, my super supportive hottie husband Darrin Ditmer! He is your go to DF guy! We could NEVER pull off a regatta of this magnitude without the help of our members & friends of DCYC! Thank you to everyone that got involved, whether it was at the level of involvement of months of planning or just showing up and offering a helping hand during the weekend! To just name a few, much thanks to Chance Beck and John Lusk for their duties down at the crane and docks. To Heather Fahl and Sheryl Strout for all of your hard work coordinating the silent and live auctions, Kim Dickey and Teresa Baker and their team made sure we had lots of great food for the entire weekend! Pam Hancock and her awesome group looked over all of beverages and made sure we had plenty of cold beverages on hand and of course they rocked the RUM Happy Hour! Tim Kraft, Sam Baker and the N’Awlins Gumbo Kings provided all of the rockin’ music that we enjoyed Happy Sailing! all weekend! Maia Mauri and Dick Peters held down the fort at the registration table. Leslie Maynard and Linda Advice from Crash on a warm summer day… Skipper John Finks along with Will Brat ,James Hankins ,Tim Johnson took 2nd place in its fleet A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it's better to be thoroughly sure. Volume 8, Issue 6 Page 8 FOOD SAFETY PRACTICES AT DCYC DCYC adheres by strict food safety practices as evidenced in these photographs. One of the most important procedure of food safety is hand washing. In the top photographs, Darrin Ditmer and Amber Doutez show proper hand washing at the "hand washing station." On the picture below left, Darrin Ditmer shows us improper procedures at the hand washing station. Shame on you Darrin! :-) On the bottom right photograph, Michele Ditmer and Phyllis Hankins show us some standard clothing that should be worn when cooking in a kitchen including a hairnet and gloves. Honestly, I am not quite sure what they are cooking, but a full body paint suit, a face mask and plaid boxer underwear are an interesting choice of clothing options for a kitchen! In any event, thanks for the kitchen team during our Corinthian Heritage Cup Regatta who made sure our kitchen and food all followed proper safety procedures throughout the whole weekend! We will be carrying on those procedures for all of our club events too! DCYC Lockers for Rent There are lockers available for rental both upstairs ($25 annually) and in the men’s restrooms ($35 annually). On the regatta side, boy where do I start? Well, after lots of planning, phone calls, meetings, and more planning, the Corinthian Heritage Cup Regatta came in a whirl and left in a flash. At the end of it all, I can say that this year it was almost effortless. Part of that is because of all of the wonderful volunteers that helped out for several months. On June 14th, Kristin Lyon will be hosting a burger burn and moonlight sail. On July 4th, you don’t want to miss all of the fun games that we have planned for you!
