2014-15 IIT Boeing Scholars Academy Program Instructor Job Description Application Deadline: Monday, February 17 Now hiring: Six full-time Program Instructors for the IIT Boeing Scholars Academy’s Summer Session. This position is especially well-suited for an advanced undergraduate student or graduate student majoring in a STEM+ related field with interest and/or experience in education. Each Program Instructor is responsible for leading a cluster of 15-17 high-achieving high school students (rising juniors and seniors; “IIT Boeing Scholars”) through a 4-week summer program, which provides participants with an interdisciplinary, thematic program of activities focused on increasing access and exposure to STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, mathematics), solving real-world problems, and addressing “big ideas” of relevance to high school students in the Chicago area. Responsibilities Attend occasional pre-program planning meetings in the spring Participate in 3 weeks of pre-program training, planning, and prep-work Complete development of interdisciplinary project challenge with instruction team Rehearse, cross train, and facilitate all project challenges during the program Serve as a TA for guest speakers, workshop facilitators, and “Serving through STEM” project facilitators Chaperone field trips and ensure all students are accounted for and safe at all times Be conscious of students’ and instructors’ health, performance, and conflicts Communicate any issues to program staff Proactively provide logistical and administrative support to program staff Participate in 1 week of post-program work to close the program Timeframe Spring: 2-3 planning meetings plus occasional communication with Lead Instructor and program staff Summer: Full time June 9, 2014 through August 1, 2014 Compensation $3,000-$4,000 stipend depending on background and experience, paid in installments during the summer, plus lunch on program days for approximately 300 total hours of work over the spring and summer Qualifications and Characteristics IIT advanced undergraduate student or graduate student (STEM major a plus), with GPA of 3.0 or better Experience teaching, tutoring, and/or mentoring, preferably with adolescents Intellectual and emotional readiness to lead, support, and manage a diverse group of 15-17 high school students Very strong organizational, time-management, administrative, and communication skills, with excellent attention to detail Strong record of leadership, service, responsibility, ethical behavior, and interpersonal and intercultural sensitivity Work experience in a team environment with minimal supervision, demonstrating an ability to prioritize and take appropriate action in the absence of explicit instruction, as well as willingness to contribute to the development of teammates’ projects Excellent social and communication skills, including the ability to present complex content to a diverse audience, discern group dynamics, act to guide and unify others, foster a positive learning environment, critique others’ work and take constructive criticism on one’s own, and collaborate effectively in creative processes Willingness to learn previously unfamiliar STEM content in order to effectively facilitate student learning of that content Flexibility, eagerness, and ability to multi-task and think on one’s feet, and to continuously produce quality work in a sometimes unpredictable educational environment Level of maturity, character, and professionalism commensurate with one’s position as a role model for high school students and as a representative of the IIT community Discretion handling confidential information and ability to exercise diplomacy in communication with external and internal contacts and staff, as well as with students and parents/guardians Genuine commitment to the program’s mission and to working with talented and diverse high school students Application Process Applicants should submit a resume, 1-page cover letter, and an unofficial transcript to Ross Ludwig (rludwig1@iit.edu).
