PARRY SOUND - With help from two separate animal
adoption initiatives, the local Ontario Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) had record
adoption numbers recently.
Despite the increased adoptions, there are still
animals needing homes.
On June 30, Parry Sound Pet Valu hosted a Cat Adopta-thon where the adoption fee was cut from $150 to $50
and the store donated $10 per cat to the OSPCA. That day,
six cats found new homes.
"Usually, at this time of year, we average five (cat
adoptions) a week," said Paige Lubbelinkhof, Parry
Sound OSPCA manager.
Pet Valu owner Jamie Dale said he opted to host the
adopt-a-thon and donate funds to the shelter for each
cat adopted, because it's a charity "near and dear to our
hearts. We know it's a challenge for them, fundraising
in general."
Mr. Dale presented the shelter with a $60 cheque last
week.
Despite the record number of adoptions on June 30, the
shelter currently has 85 cats in its care, some in foster
homes, with 65 ready for adoption including 28 kittens.
The shelter is built to house 40 cats.
"It's always crazy this time of year," said Ms
Lubbelinkhof. "Also, it's the busiest time for adoptions.
So, it makes sense to hold the adopt-a-thon."
During Wally's Week, July 18-25, six of the shelter's
seven dogs were adopted. Ms Lubbelinkhof said normally
two dogs a week get adopted from the shelter.
"It does help us out," said Ms Lubbelinkhof.
Author Marsha Boulton organized Wally's Week,
named after her English bull terrier, at OSPCAs in Orillia,
Muskoka, Barrie and the animal shelter in Huntsville.
During the week, new owners received a gift bag filled
with items such as treats and toys.
There are currently three adult dogs at the OSPCA.
A second Cat Adopt-a-thon at Pet Valu is booked for
Saturday, August 25.
