Part I: Reading the Play
This 6 weeks, you will read the play, Antigone, and complete a portfolio. During class, you will
complete parts of the portfolio as you read.
Part II: Completing the Portfolio- Summative Reading Assessment Grade
You will need a 1/2” binder for your work. This is called your Portfolio. Label it clearly (see
box below). This is NOT the same binder that you keep your other classwork in.
While you are reading the play, you will complete the Checklist of Assignments. As you
complete each assignment, place it in your binder and check it off the list. All pages will be
typed, hole-punched, and placed in the binder. Bring your binder to class EVERY day.

Part III: Preparing for the Presentation - Final Exam Grade
Present your #9, your favorite part of the play to the class. Pass your
Portfolio Binder around for the class to see while you’re presenting.
1. Play your radio commercial for the class to hear.
2. Only include the most important information in your presentation. Use
note cards to help you remember what to say. Do not read a summary
to the class.
3. Make a visual aid (large poster or Keynote or Power Point) with 5
slides illustrating your favorite part of the play. Use your visual aid to
help you present.
*Your presentation will be 2-3 minutes. At the end, give your opinion of
the play.
You will present on the exam day assigned to your class.

***Be sure that EVERYTHING (all pages in the binder) is labeled with
the title of the play, the author’s name, your name, class period, the date of
your presentation and the subtitle- your favorite part.

Explanation of Portfolio Assignments (13)
1. Wonderful Words List- Collect 30 new vocabulary words from this play. Define the words by
using the context clues in the sentence or a dictionary. Write the quote, scene, and line numbers.
2. Crossword Puzzle- Design a crossword puzzle with the words from your Wonderful Word List.
Use the definitions for your clues. Include an answer key on a separate page.
3. Make-Believe Cereal- Design a make-believe cereal for this play. Create an original name and
identify the flavors, prizes, shapes, and nutritional information to match characters and events in
the play. Draw the box.
4. Character Descriptions- Identify and describe the five most important characters in the play.
Write one paragraph for each. Give a quote to support your description of each.
5. Vertical Acronym- Pick one character from your play. Write that name vertically. Use each
letter in that name to describe the character. For example:
P- Purposeful; Strives for Success
H- Hilarious; Has a Great Sense of Humor
I- Intelligent; Loves to Watch Discovery
L- Listens Well; Considerate and Thoughtful
6. Plot Analysis- Analyze the plot of this play. Discuss the exposition, major conflicts, climax,
and resolution. Identify how Sophocles used a specific style (including rhetorical devices and
figurative language) in writing the play.
7. Letter of Advice- Write a letter to one of the characters in the play who has a problem (Creon or
Antigone). Make some suggestions about how you would solve this problem. Be specific by using
3 rhetorical devices. Highlight each rhetorical device in a different color. Be sure to sign the letter.
8. Themes- Examine one major theme from this play. What is the main idea or underlying
importance of this novel? What is the author trying to tell you? One page.
9. Favorite Part- Discuss your favorite part of the play. Explain why it affected you. Give 3
quotes with rhetorical devices that made it memorable. One page.
10. Persuasive Essay- Write to convince the audience of your opinion on one theme:
“Is it more important to obey man’s law or support family?” Support your argument with quotes
from the play, current events, movies, or other literature. Organize your essay with an introduction,
body, and conclusion. Check your rubric for more details. One page.
11. Radio Commercial- Write the script for a 30 second radio commercial. It will advertise the
play, Antigone and identify the locations it can be purchased as well as the cost. Include a brief
summary. Record your voice on a digital recorder (computer, iPod, or cassette recorder.)
12. Character Gifts- If you could give a present to the three major characters, what would you
give and why? These can be real or fictional presents. Write or draw this.
13. Table of Contents- Compile a list of all the parts of your portfolio. Identify the page number
of each assignment. Organize this in your binder. It's best to do this LAST.

Enrichment Opportunities
 Create a costume and dress up like a character from the play. Wear the costume on the
day of your presentation. During the presentation, explain the costume to the class. (25
points)
 Read another play by the same author and write a one page summary. (25 points)
 Make a list of other plays written about Greek mythology. Explain why you would or
would not consider reading another book by this author. (10 points)
 Create a physical demo of the cereal box which you designed. (10-25 points)
