Circus! The Photographs of Frederick W. Glasier opened at the History Center on Saturday, May 25, offering a behind-the-scenes look at life under the big top. On loan from the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, the collection of more than 60 rare black and white photographs captures the working life of circus performers in the early 20th century, from ticket takers and sideshow performers to contortionists, clowns, and acrobats. Photographer Frederick W. Glasier traveled with Ringling Bros., the Sparks Circus, and the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show during the early 1900s through the 1930s, documenting the behind-the-scenes lives and work of traveling showmen and entertainers. His lens captures both the spectacle and humanity of the American circus during its heyday. The photographs selected for the History Center’s exhibition are part of a unique collection of more than 1,700 original glass plate negatives made by Glasier between 1896 and the 1930s and preserved in the archives of the Ringling. The prints in the exhibition are reproductions, made using an elaborate digital process that involves scanning gelatin silver prints from the original glass negatives and printing them on archival paper. During this process, the technicians have the ability to extract details in the images that have never been seen before, as well as enlarge the images far beyond the size that Glasier would have been able to print at the beginning of the 20th century. “These photos give us a unique perspective into the lives of circus performers and showmen, many of whom either came through the Tampa Bay area while on tour or lived here during the winter,” said Rodney Kite-Powell, the History Center’s Saunders Foundation Curator of History. Circus! The Photographs of Frederick W. Glasier has been organized by the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, the State Art Museum of Florida, and Florida State University, Sarasota, FL. Circus! is on exhibit through Aug. 4, and is sponsored by the Kimmins Foundation and the Tampa Bay Times. Photo courtesy of the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. From the president Not a day goes by that I am not reminded of the important work we are doing at the Tampa Bay History Center. Whether watching a group of schoolchildren learn about the history of their community or listening to tourists express surprise upon learning that Florida has so many rich stories to tell, I am reminded of the significant role we fulfill. Two recent events, in particular, have reinforced this notion. The first involved a letter I received from a woman who recently celebrated her 89th birthday and was reflecting on her family’s history. She wrote that her father was a cigar worker who emigrated from Cuba, and that she still has the tools he used to practice his trade. She told me how much she looks forward to visiting the History Center to see our Cigar City exhibit and reminisce. Needless to say, we immediately called her retirement home and are working with them to ensure that she does have an opportunity to visit. How wonderful, I thought, that our community has a place that captures and preserves the experiences of her parents and can serve as a repository for her family’s collections should she decide to donate them. The other event involved the premiere of a documentary produced by the Young Lawyers Division of the Hillsborough County Bar Association. The documentary, Before the Law Was Equal, chronicles the desegregation of the legal system in the Tampa Bay area. It features oral histories from many in the profession who assisted in the process of integration and who worked to break barriers. Since the time the documentary was produced, our community lost two pioneers in the struggle for equality with the passing of Judge Don Castor and Reece Smith, prominent Tampa attorney and former president of the American Bar Association. I applaud the Bar for ensuring that these stories will be preserved, and I am delighted that we were able to share these oral histories with our members and guests. As I observed the audience at the premiere, I was reminded that we not only serve as a museum, but also an important community gathering space. The History Center is a place where groups can come together to learn about, celebrate, and commemorate our community’s rich heritage. The importance of our work is obvious, but the reminders can sometimes be very powerful. C. J. Roberts Frank E. Duckwall President and CEO 2 TampaBayHistoryCenter.org In memoriam Frank R. North Frank North (far right) with TBHC trustees Rob Wolf and Chris Osborn at the History Center’s 2006 Annual Meeting. Frank North, former board member of the Tampa Bay History Center, passed away on Easter Sunday, March 31. His love of both history and his hometown of Tampa came to life during his 11year tenure on the board of trustees. Frank’s duties on the board included leading, at different times, both the marketing committee and the USF committee. He was tireless in his promotion of the History Center, and he was understandably proud when another one of the loves in his life–his daughter Kristin–was hired in 2008 to lead the visitor services staff. In addition to his time with the History Center, Frank also served three terms as president of the Tampa Historical Society, from 1998-2000. It was at the Historical Society where Frank was able to flex his journalistic muscles. He edited the Society’s journal, the Sunland Tribune, from 1998-2002, helping to bring new scholarship focusing on local history to light. His term as editor came at a very important time because it coincided with the decision by the University of South Florida’s history department to cease publication of their journal, Tampa Bay History. His efforts earned him the Society’s 2003 D. B. McKay Award for his many contributions toward the promotion of state and local history. In 2007, Frank was instrumental in the revival of Tampa Bay History, now published through a partnership between the History Center and the USF Libraries’ special collections department. Frank gave his time and energy to the History Center when the dream for a permanent home was just that–a dream. Through the hard work and dedicated efforts of people like Frank, that dream became a reality. He instilled his dedication and his love of history into his children, who will carry that legacy into the future. Leland M. Hawes Jr. On Saturday, May 18, we lost a great friend and supporter when Leland M. Hawes Jr. passed away at the age of 83. Leland was one of the early advocates for a history museum in Tampa, but true to his journalistic integrity, he didn’t feel it would be appropriate to serve on the new Tampa Bay History Center’s board. Instead, he sat on the fledgling museum’s advisory committee and helped guide the creation Leland cuts the ribbon for the opening of the History Center’s day of the History Center’s Franklin Street first preview center location in 1996. location at the shops at Harbour Island, which opened in March 1994. By that time, he was already 12 years into his “new” job of History & Heritage columnist for the Tampa Tribune. Leland supported the efforts to both preserve and write about our area’s history in a wide variety of ways. His financial support for the Tampa Bay History Center, the University of South Florida Libraries’ special collections department, and USF St. Petersburg’s Florida Studies Program only scratches the surface. He was tireless in his assistance to historians, reporters, and authors who constantly sought his council. Whether it was to clarify a date, provide information about a person, explain a familial relationship, or to offer advice on publishing an article or a book, Leland never lost his patience and always made people feel like their question, their problem, or their publication was important to him. After retiring from the Tribune, Leland agreed to join the History Center’s board of trustees. As a board member, he served on the museum’s collections committee–a position he maintained even after his term on the board ended. Again, he was always there to offer advice or to help explain the importance of–or more often the connections between–an artifact to our area’s history. His contributions to our community were great, and his absence will certainly be felt for years to come. That loss will be felt even more by his family, his friends, and all of the budding journalists, writers, and historians he helped along the way. – RKP. Summer Edition 2013 3 2012 Annual Report Dear Friends of the Tampa Bay History Center, Thanks to our many supporters, members, and friends, the History Center enjoyed a very successful 2012. It is with great pride that I share just a few highlights with you: Collections • The History Center accessioned 1,260 artifacts into its collection. • The largest gift of 2012 was a donation of artifacts from former Gov. Bob Martinez related to his career in public office. • The History Center received a dollhouse of the Hutchinson House in Hyde Park. A oneof-a-kind representation of Tampa history and architecture, the dollhouse was built in 1977 as part of a fundraising initiative to restore the house and make it suitable for office space. Local attorney and custodian of the Hutchinson House, Matthew D. Powell, recently purchased the dollhouse from its previous owner and generously donated it to the History Center. Representatives from Melita Coffee and Tampa’s Buddy Brew serve up some freshly-roasted java during the opening for Coffee: The World in Your Cup. Membership • Nearly 300 new households were added to the History Center’s membership rolls. • Parking validation was added as a member benefit. • Bok Tower Gardens and the Armed Forces History Museum were added to the History Center’s reciprocal program. • A new corporate membership opportunity was developed to provide special benefits and recognition for Tampa Bay’s businesses. Traveling Exhibitions • On loan from the International Spy Museum in Washington, D.C., Spies Traitor and Saboteurs: Fear and Freedom in America gave visitors an in-depth look at historic events that forever changed our nation. • Coffee: The World in Your Cup, from the Burke Museum at University of Washington, presented the rich story of one of the world’s most widely-traded commodities. History Center docent Roy Kendall introduces Coacochee’s Story during a recent school tour. Programs for Children and Students • 10,000 students from Hillsborough and surrounding counties participated in docent-led tours. • Children ages 7 to 11 participated in History Adventure Camps, learning about Florida archaeology, historic architecture, and more. • In October, the History Center came to life during Night at the Museum as families trick-or-treated through the galleries Fundraising Pamela Price and friends attend the Cigar City Gala. 4 TampaBayHistoryCenter.org • Pledged contributions to the History Center’s nearly-completed Capital Campaign total more than 33 million dollars. • The 2012 Cigar City Gala enjoyed its best year ever. With George and Mary Lib Howell at the helm, a hard-working Ambassador Committee led by June Annis, and the support of several sponsors, net revenue exceeded 2011 totals by 40%. Increased Visibility • The History Center gained national exposure during the Republican National Convention as FOX News broadcast to 7.5 million viewers live from the Lykes Atrium. • Signage was installed at the corner of Channelside Drive and Old Water Street, and signage was added to the building, providing better visibility from Harbour Island and Cotanchobee Park. • New boat docks installed along the Riverwalk provide boaters with easy access to the History Center. Invested in the Future New signage at the corner of Channelside Dr. and Old Water St. • The History Center achieved Silver certification through the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program. • History Center staff worked with the Historical Monument Trail Committee to add busts of historic figures along the Riverwalk. Service and Outreach • The History Center welcomed more than 75,000 visitors in FY2012. • 145 volunteers collectively provided more than 5,000 hours of volunteer service. • History Center staff provided educational activities at more than a dozen community events. • The History Center continued to offer the Florida Conversation Lecture Series, which is free and open to the public. Fox News sets up in the Lykes Atrium during the Republican National Convention. As you can see, 2012 was an exciting year of growth and progress for the History Center. I am honored to continue this year as chair of the board of trustees and I want to thank my fellow trustees for their hard work and vision, which has led us through another successful year. Sincerely, Paul L. The tassel, 2010.082.001 | Courtesy of James C. Handly Jr. By Jamie Lynn Riedy, Collections Department Volunteer This fez belonged to James C. Handly Sr., a long-time member of Tampa’s Egypt Temple. Mr. Handly wore the fez after he completed his term as the temple’s potentate (chapter president) in 1946. As temple potentate, Handly was instrumental in planning and executing Tampa’s first Cigar Bowl football game, held in January 1947, to benefit Shriners Hospital. He was a dedicated community servant who, among his many other activities, served as president of the Tampa Chapter of the American Red Cross from 1935 to 1940 and was commander of USS Tampa Post 5, American Legion, 1934-1935. Handly received the “Outstanding Citizen of the Year” award from the Tampa Civitan Club in 1945. This particular fez dates from the mid to late 1940s. It was crafted by the Cincinnati Regalia Company, which specialized in fraternal organization gear and accessories and operated for over 100 years before it went out of business in 1998 due to declining sales. The fez is constructed of heavy red felt and adorned with hand-embroidered and rhinestone-studded gold braid Shriners bound by a rhinestone band, is fastened to the left side of the fez with a single silver scimitar pin. The top of the fez is perforated with small holes for air flow. Mr. Martin Mendelson of D. Turin & Company, a Shriners regalia manufacturer located in Hialeah, Florida, estimates that the fez could have taken a full two days to make and cost about $15 or $16 at the time of its purchase. Today, a comparable fez would cost $275-$300. The fez was adopted as the official headgear for members of the fraternal organization formally called the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, better known as the Shriners, at the group’s inception in 1872. Although fez adornment is strictly regulated, the fez may be personalized with the name of the member’s temple (club chapter) and other decoration indicating the member’s roles within their chapter. Every fez displays the Shriners emblem which consists of a scimitar, sphinx, claws, and star. According to Shriners International, each component of the Shriners emblem relates to the organization and its mission. The scimitar represents the membership, the two claws symbolize the Shriners’ emphasis on philanthropy and fraternity, the sphinx symbolizes the organization’s governing body, and the star represents all of the children that the organization has helped through its charitable works and donations. Monument trail winds through history Saunders Foundation Curator of History and Historical Monument Trail Chairman Rodney Kite-Powell unveils the six new honorees at a press conference in April. A prominent newspaper publisher, a civil rights attorney, an outspoken civic activist, two pioneering Tampa business leaders, and a Cuban revolutionary are the latest additions to the downtown Riverwalk’s Historical Monument Trail. Monument Trail selection committee chairman and History Center curator Rodney Kite-Powell announced the new honorees at an unveiling ceremony at the History Center on April 23. He was joined by Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn, Monument Trail chairman Steven Anderson, local elected officials, and family members. Newly named to the Historical Monument Trail are Florida Sentinel Bulletin publisher C. Blythe Andrews; civil rights attorney Cody Fowler; community activist Kate Jackson; Tampa businessman Peter O. Knight; Cuban revolutionary leader Paulina Pedroso; and African- American civic leader and business owner G.D. Rogers. Local sculptor Steve Dickey will create bronze busts of the six honorees, which will be placed along the Riverwalk in the fall. They’ll join the original six honorees, cigar manufacturer V.M. Ybor; railroad magnate Henry Plant; nurse Clara Frye; suffragette Eleanor Chamberlain; businessman James McKay; and a native Tocobaga fisherman. “These six honorees are truly special people,” said Steve Anderson, chair of Monument Trail Committee and vice chair of the Friends of the Riverwalk. “They've been leaders, most of them without ever being elected. They've inspired us. ... They stood their ground on just, maybe unpopular causes.” The Monument Trail Selection Committee researches and vets candidates to be included on the Trail. To be considered, nominees must have resided in Tampa or Hillsborough County, made a lasting contribution to the development of the local community, and must have been deceased for at least 15 years. Nominations can be made by contacting Rodney Kite-Powell at rkp@tampabayhistorycenter.org.
