Non-Profit Org US Postage PAID Permit No. 9 Buffalo, NY 300 Parkside Avenue Buffalo, NY 14214-1999 (716) 837-3900 Zoological Society of Buffalo, Inc. Mission Statement T he Zoological Society of Buffalo, Inc. is an independent, non-profit corporation organized for the establishment, maintenance and operation of the Zoological Gardens; for the education and recreation of the people and visitors of the Niagara Frontier; for the advancement and encouragement of the science of zoology; for the practice of conservation of the world’s wildlife; and for the exhibition of diverse species of animals from throughout the world. Zoo Attendance 2005370,311 1 2004 363,182 2003 347,083 2002 329,819 2001 383,710 From the President Donna M. Fernandes, Ph.D. W e will remember 2005 as a year filled with remarkable highs and distressing lows. The year began with the loss of “Omega”, our silverback male gorilla, on January 10, 2005. Omega had been here for 24 years and had sired nine offspring at the Buffalo Zoo. Shortly after his passing, we found that more rough times awaited us. Erie County soon announced the elimination of all funding for cultural organizations as part of the Red Budget. To deal with the loss of $1.5 million in funding, we slashed our operating budget by $885,000 in early February. Our swift response included salary cuts for senior staff, the elimination of 20 positions, a reduction in operating hours, fee increases and the launch of our Bridge Fund. Although we had 80 percent of our county funding restored a month later, we still had to contend with a decrease of $400,000 from county, city and state sources. Throughout these hardships, our friends in the community were there for us. The Bridge Fund brought in more than $126,000 from Board members, friends and concerned citizens. Fox 29 produced a public service announcement recommending ways that viewers could help close the Zoo’s budget gap. The Western New York Foundation provided us with a no interest loan of $300,000 to assist with cash flow until the first county payment arrived. The Buffalo Zoo was a beneficiary of the JP Morgan/Chase Corporate Challenge and received $10,600. Rick Snowden held a birthday party at his home to benefit the Zoo and collected $25,000. Harris Beach donated a Harley Davidson motorcycle as a raffle prize and raised $22,000. Colony Liquor coordinated a fundraiser whereby a portion of proceeds from the sale of Lorikeet Sparkling Wines during July, August and September went to the Zoo. Finally, the Zoo received a grant of $100,000 through Senator Dale Volker to upgrade the computer systems. Our dedicated docents also provided much appreciated help! They voted to allow all revenue from the Zoo Trunk program, a Docent run program, to go toward the Education Department rather than the Docent Organization. They were also instrumental in executing the Tops “Shop for the Animals” promotion, which encouraged shoppers to purchase and then donate enrichment and specialty items for the animals. Our docents continue to assist with our animal enrichment by providing many of the specialty items enjoyed by the collection. The Zoo’s proactive response to the crisis did not go unnoticed by the public, the media and major donors. We received a letter from the Erie County Cultural Resources Advisory Board, commenting on how well the Zoo handled the reduction in funding in 2005 and praising the Zoo staff and Board for their leadership. Despite hardships earlier in the year, we were able to move ahead with the completion of one major exhibit and the renovation of another. On August 6, we opened Sea Lion Cove to complete the second part of our $6.5 million river otter/sea lion complex. We did experience a temporary setback when the exhibit rockwork was found to be defective, which resulted in a two-month closure for repairs in the fall. The exhibit has since reopened and is a big hit with Zoo visitors. The historic Reptile House underwent a major renovation, and we are pleased with the results! Local Labor Union 210 donated $28,000 worth of labor, supplies and materials to remove all of the lead paint in the exhibits. David Rock’s exquisite murals, along with new graphics and exhibit furnishings, truly transformed the House. We continued to move forward with designs for our new South American Rainforest, including approval of the building’s exterior by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (NYSOPRHP). Although several features of the original project had to be scaled back to remain within our budget, we are very pleased with the final exhibit layout and species selection. To help keep visitors aware of these exciting projects, the Zoo’s new website was launched. Thanks to Eric Lee, the Zoo’s art director, and the website committee, the website is now much more attractive and colorful. In addition to featuring more information and the Zoo’s new official logo, the website is also secure for online purchasing. At Dr. Frank Ridgley’s request, some positive changes were made to the Zoo’s vet hospital as well. Remote thermometers were installed into the wards and quarantine areas to allow the engineers to monitor temperatures in the rooms by way of the hallway. This prevents them from entering wards that might contain sick or stressed animals, or quarantine, where no one should enter without the proper attire. The two rooms were sealed and painted, and the floors were thoroughly cleaned. Ward 1 serves as the primary treatment area for any hospitalized animals, and the hallway in the hospital was refinished with an epoxy finish to provide a more durable and cleanable surface. Kaleida Health also donated a mini C-Arm to the hospital that takes “motion X-rays” to allow visualization of certain problems as they are happening internally. No other veterinary practice in the Buffalo area has this type of machine. In addition, we have a wireless monitor system, which allows remote monitoring for nursing in neonates and behavioral problems in other animals without the influence of someone being present with the animal. A wireless digital camera is also available in the hospital, which is designed to be viewable from anywhere in the world over the Internet. When completed, it will provide webcam capabilities for our website and remote monitoring of patients. The maintenance department also kept busy with multiple repairs and improvements. The seating area by the reindeer exhibit was rebuilt, the roof of the grounds department garage was replaced, the old condor cage was demolished, the uneven pavers in front of the W.I.L.D. Place Theater were pulled up and reset and a new barrier gate was installed in the elephant barn. Finally, the gorilla holding areas, the interior of the Children’s Zoo barn and the administrative offices were all repainted. Despite a rough beginning, we ended the year surprisingly well, with a modest operating deficit of $16,587. The annual fund was up $55,000, in spite of having already raised $126,000 for the Bridge Fund. We were up $100,000 in paid admissions, and membership income increased as well. We tried to hold the line on expenses, particularly salaries and wages. However, we did have to contend with major increases in utilities. The year was a stressful one, but thanks to our Board members, staff, volunteers and the public, we were able to get through it. We’re looking forward to a bright 2006! 2 Animal Collection Inventory New Exhibits Dallas, one of the Zoo’s California sea lions, explores his new exhibit. SEA LION COVE Sea Lion Cove, presented by NOCO Energy Corporation, opened to the public on August 6, 2005 and continues to be a hit with Zoo visitors! The exhibit, which is located adjacent to Otter Creek, recreates the California coastline and offers visitors several opportunities to get faceto-face with the Zoo’s newest residents, California sea lions Dallas and Pocus. Other exhibit highlights include naturalistic rockwork, saltwater pools and extensive landscaping of indigenous plants. Visitors can observe the sea lions year-round by using the dramatic underwater viewing windows, bridges or state-of-the-art 220seat amphitheater, which will host daily demonstrations. A variety of interpretive graphics surround the exhibit and serve as educational tools designed to teach visitors about the natural history and ecology of the species. Sea Lion Cove is the fourth exhibit to open as part of the first phase of the Zoo’s Master Plan. In addition to fitting nicely with the Zoo’s theme of water, the species had been missing from the Zoo for 25 years and was the animal most requested to return to the Zoo during several public meetings leading up to the development of the Master Plan. Species of significance born or hatched in 2005 Sulawesi crested macaque, prehensile-tailed porcupine, maned wolf, guanaco, reticulated giraffe, axis deer, reindeer, mouflon, bighorn sheep, roan antelope, gemsbok, cinereous vulture, green-naped lory, Indochinese box turtle, Chinese three-striped box turtle, spotted turtle, South American red-footed tortoise, yellow-throated day gecko, desert iguana, whiptail lizard, black tree monitor, Eastern indigo snake, Anderson’s alligator newt, green and black poison dart frog Sulawesi crested macaque (born 2005) 2005 Species / Specimens Mammals 58/186 Birds 55/248 Reptiles 46/182 Reticulated giraffe (born 2005) The newly-renovated Reptile House is a big hit with visitors! REPTILE HOUSE After six months of renovations, the Reptile House was ready to once again impress visitors with its exhibits—this time lead-free! The House, which had not been closed for an extended time since its opening in 1942, was completely transformed and officially re-opened to an awestruck public on November 5, 2005. The renovation project was originally launched due to peeling lead paint, which threatened to become an animal hazard. Due to the high cost of proper abatement, Zoo staff had been trying to come up with another solution. Buffalo Zoo President and CEO, Dr. Donna M. Fernandes, worked out an agreement, with Local Labor Union 210 to use the Reptile House as a training facility for their Abatement Training School. After Local 210 generously completed the abatement work, the Zoo was able to use the donations from a party hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Rick Snowden to complete the update. Renowned muralist David Rock paid close attention to detail and created breathtaking scenes to depict the animals’ natural habitats. New glass fronts and graphics completed the transformation. Visitors can view 23 exhibits of animals from all over the world, including turtles, snakes, lizards and an American alligator. Hopkins, Ph.D., Yerkes National Primate Research Center Division of Psychobiology The goal of the project was to evaluate the different ways gorillas grip and manipulate food to provide empirical evidence in a comparison across different ape species. 5 “Electrocardiography in Elephants” Susan Bartlett and Noha Abou-Madi, DVM, MS Cornell University This study is assessing the most effective and accurate techniques to perform electrocardiography on elephants. Normal ranges for P-QRS-T complexes and the effects of body weight, sex, age and species will be established. “Analysis of Gastric Phytobezoar Formation in Prehensile-tailed Porcupines, Coendu prehensilis” Frank Ridgley, DVM, Buffalo Zoological Gardens This study involves the investigation of a syndrome of gastric phytobezoar formation in captive Coendou prehensilis. The phytobezoars were analyzed by some independent laboratories for composition, and from this we hope to devise a medical alternative to resolution rather than surgical. This project was initiated in 2004 and continued in 2005. “Scent Discrimination in Lions and Tigers and Its Implication in Kin Recognition” Kelly Caffery, SUNY College at Buffalo Department of Psychology Urine was used to determine if the cats can discriminate the scent as it relates to kin. 6 Education Development and Marketing T he education department’s programming maintained a strong following in 2005. The Mentoring Young Scientists program was launched for disadvantaged seventh grade Buffalo Public School students. Funded by a federal grant from the National Leadership Program of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the after school program ran throughout the academic year. Mentors and their students worked together to learn about animal behavior, veterinary medicine and wildlife conservation through a series of weekly workshops. The first year of the program culminated with each team conducting an independent science project. The program is currently in its second year. Attendance at Zoo Snooze, our overnight program, was up 25% in 2005, and Cub Club became so popular that the Zoo had to offer three sessions per week to accommodate demand. The traditional one-month teen Apprentice program was replaced with a series of eight different workshops related to specific topics about careers working with animals. Once again, the Canisius Ambassadors for Conservation (CAC) students enhanced Zoo programming by conducting shows and interpretations on otters, sea lions and elephant conservation. The volunteer program continued to assist in fulfilling the Zoo’s educational and recreational mission. In 2005 alone, 672 individuals volunteered at the Zoo, providing a total of 30,650 hours of service. The economic value of their contribution exceeded $550,000. Valentine’s Day Adopt an Animal Program This successful program sold close to 800 valentines this year, with people still buying them after the holiday! For $10, loved ones received an adoption certificate, a 4 oz. chocolate heart from Fowler’s and two guest passes to the Zoo. Polar Bites This annual winter event, hosted by the Pro Zoo Board, continues to be a hit! Nearly 750 guests enjoyed an evening at Rich Renaissance Atrium sampling various food, dessert and beverage items from area vendors as well as participating in the basket and silent auctions. The event netted $30,000 for the Zoo. Wild Wednesdays These weekly segments on WKBW-TV Channel 7’s morning show continued to highlight different Zoo animals as well as upcoming events and attractions. Wines in the Wild While this event set a record in attendance last year, numbers increased even more this year as 1,900 people enjoyed an evening filled with food, wine, beer, live music and basket and silent auctions. This event, hosted by the Pro Zoo Board and Women’s Board, netted $50,000 for the Zoo’s Adopt an Animal program. NFTA Labor Day at the Zoo This year’s event, presented by the NFTA, featured a bounce house, face painting, games and animal feedings. Admission was $1, with coupons available at local Tops Markets locations. Rhino Birthday Party The Buffalo Zoo’s baby Indian rhinoceros celebrated her first birthday in September. The Zoo teamed up with Perry’s Ice Cream to throw a birthday bash complete with games, prizes, keeper talks and free samples of ice cream! Ashakiran, the Zoo’s baby Indian rhino, celebrated her first birthday! The Mentoring Young Scientists program was launched in 2005. 7 8 Friends of the Zoo Selected Special Events Herps Day In January, Buffalo Zoo visitors enjoyed this event, which featured keeper talks, snake feedings, enrichment activities and craft stations. Reptile lovers also had the chance to enter to win reptile paintings, created by the Zoo’s own residents! Hot beverages were available throughout the event. Wild About Wellness Health Fair In April, the Buffalo Zoo teamed up with Wegmans and Univera Healthcare to present the first Wild About Wellness Health Fair. This event offered Zoo visitors free health screenings, exercise demonstrations and nutritional information to teach them how to lead a healthier lifestyle. T he Board and Staff of The Zoological Society of Buffalo, Inc. would like to thank all of the individuals and organizations listed below. All leadership gifts made during the 2005 calendar year are acknowledged here. Every effort has been made to ensure accuracy. If you notice any mistakes or omissions, please notify the Development Office at the Buffalo Zoo. We are grateful to all of our donors for their continuing support and generosity. Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra Concert On July 17, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra brought its Summer Symphony to the Zoo. The event combined the beautiful sound of music with some wild Zoo surprises. Buki the elephant even played the harmonica! Government Support Wonders of Water In August, Zoo visitors celebrated the opening of Sea Lion Cove with a “wet and wild” event designed as part of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association’s (AZA) public campaign that encourages families to learn more about the importance of water conservation. Activities included animal encounters, enrichment activities, a water saver race, “building” an ocean and creating a “Thank You Ocean” banner. AJM Realty Billoni Associates Mr. Robert W.
