SIENA, ITALY Study Abroad Programs in Italy for American Sign Language Users Intensive Summer and Semester Programs SUMMER STUDY ABROAD FOR SIGNERS This exciting three-week summer program offers signers an opportunity to engage in a Deaf-World that expands beyond America. This immersion program provides ASL users a foundation for transnational engagement that invites a fresh perspective on ASL as a visual and spatial language. Additionally, students will take basic Italian, providing them a tool to better navigate life in the city of Siena. SUMMER ADULT PROFESSIONALS & GRADUATE STUDENT PROGRAM The Siena School for Liberal Arts, located in Tuscany, offers unique study abroad programs for university students and adult professionals. Since 2005, the Deaf Studies Department has ambitiously worked with Italian and American Deaf and signing communities in providing exciting opportunities for students and professionals alike. Our programs allow ASL users access to transnational Deaf and signing communities through learning Italian Sign Language (LIS), and Italian Deaf Culture & History. Collaborations include agreements with Gallaudet University, RIT/NTID, University of New Mexico, University of North Carolina Greensboro, and Columbia College Chicago. Italian collaborations include the ENS (National Deaf Association), CGSI (National Deaf Youth Association), ANIOS (National Interpreting Association), and the Mason Perkins Deafness Fund (MPDF). ISLA12_promo_deaf.indd 1 An alternative approach to professional development, this two-week intensive program gives adult professionals and graduate students exposure to Italian Sign Language and Italian Deaf culture. Such engagement encourages professionals and graduate students to re-examine and strengthen their linguistic and cultural expertise. SUMMER TWO & THREE WEEK INDEPENDENT RESEARCH AND SERVICE LEARNING PROJECTS Students seeking service learning projects or guided independent research in Interpretation, Deaf Education, or Linguistics, now have that opportunity in Siena. Service learning projects allow students to work directly with the Mason Perkins Deafness Fund, a non-profit whose objective is to contribute to Deaf and Deaf-blind educational and community development in Italy. SEMESTER STUDY ABROAD FOR ASL USERS A study abroad opportunity directly related to sign language and Deaf culture, this unique full-semester program provides ASL users a linguistic and cultural immersion into the transnational Deaf-World. Semester consists of core Deaf Studies courses, numerous elective offerings, and a schoolsponsored trip to another Deaf community in Italy. Courses are sign language accessible. 20-07-2012 18:54:21 General Information, Credit Transfer, Application & Contact Information Program cost includes tuition, program fees, and accommodation.
