BOWLING STUDY GUIDE
The sport of BOWLING is a “life skill” activity. This means it can be played by anyone regardless of
their age or ability. The game can be played as a competitive sport or just for pleasure.
The object of the game is to knock down all ten pins each time you bowl. This is done by aiming for
the POCKET. A bowling game consists of 10 frames in which the bowler tries to knock down as many pins
as possible with one or two balls (throws) in each frame. If you were to bowl a strike in every frame you
would end up with a PERFECT GAME of 300 points!
SCORING
OPEN – Means you did NOT get a spare or a strike in a given frame. Add the two balls thrown to come up
with
your score for that frame.
MARK – Means you have gotten a spare or strike in a given frame.
STRIKE – “X” – is scored 10 + the next TWO balls rolled.
SPARE – “/” – is scored 10 + the next ball rolled.
TERMS
Pocket—between the 1-3 or 1-2 pins.
Foul – to touch or go beyond the foul line while delivering the ball.
Approach – the way in which you release the ball, 3, 4, or 5 step.
Gutter Ball – ball that drops into the gutter.
Leave—the number of pins left standing after a throw.
Turkey – 3 strikes in a row.
Double – 2 strikes in a row.
Strike Out – 3 strikes in the 10th frame.
Split – when more than 1 pin is left standing and the pins are not next to each other. Ex. Railroad.
Always use proper conduct and sportsmanship while bowling. This is called ETIQUETTE.
