While this is a month to celebrate St. Valentine and our country’s Presidents, February is also our month with National Engineering Week starting this Sunday February 21. On the National side, this week is about celebrating how engineers make a difference in our world, increasing public dialogue about the need for engineers and bringing engineering to life for kids, educators and parents. Locally we have an outstanding set of traditions that if you haven’t ever experienced, you are missing out on the best part of February. Unlike the social events we attend the rest of the year, this week’s events are tailored to our [geeky] tastes and a time when we are in the spotlight so jokes about Calculus, design parameters and so forth are completely appropriate and expected (don’t worry – I don’t tell jokes well so no worries about suffering through them at the awards banquet.) So if you are looking for a great morning, afternoon, or evening out, try MathCounts where we support students and their math skills, the Joint Society Luncheon where we have the opportunity to listen to Dr. Bryce Rutter on “Innovation & Design: Every Detail Matters” or our local Awards Banquet which is a great fun evening of socializing with fellow Engineers and get to celebrate the outstanding Engineering accomplishments of our awards winners. Finally, sometime at the Science Center at the end of Engineering week is not to be missed with exhibits about new and cool things going on in Engineering. I hope each of you takes some time out to enjoy Engineering Week and all the different ways to spend a few minutes recognizing the contributions we make to society and the ways society needs each of us and our skills. You will find the details for each of the events inside this month’s newsletter. Sincerely, Kathy French, P.E.
