2013 ANNUAL REPORT | LETTER FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT + EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
LETTER FROM THE BOARD
PRESIDENT + EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Dear Friends:
FY 2013 was a year of re-emergence for TriCity Family Services. The continued,
albeit slow, recovery from the Great Recession contributed to a 37% increase in total private
funding compared to the previous fiscal year, allowing us to turn our attention once again to
service delivery growth and re-commit to addressing important capital needs that had been
demoted to “back-burner” status during the economic downturn.
Jim Di Ciaula
President
Programmatically, staff invested a great deal of time and energy in one of the most
ambitious endeavors ever undertaken by the agency, the development of a new family-based
treatment (FBT) program for eating disorders. FBT not only holds great promise as an affordable
and effective out-patient treatment alternative for individuals and families struggling with this
serious disorder, it is beautifully aligned with TCFS’ family-centered mission and treatment
philosophy. We look forward with much enthusiasm to growing this program in the coming
year and to becoming a leader in the provision of FBT in Northern Illinois.
A second new and very successful manifestation of the agency’s FY 2013 re-emergence
was a new initiative offered under TCFS’ Prevention/Early Intervention line of service called
Chick Chat. Developed and offered in collaboration with the non-profit organization HGNA
(Helping Girls Navigate Adolescence), the Geneva Coalition for Youth and Geneva School
District #304, this full-day enrichment program was launched on 2/9/12, with 99 4th and 5th
grade girls participating in what we expect to be our first annual Chick Chat.
The outpouring of community support that made last spring’s Annual Benefit a fundraising
milestone for the agency, and a 74% increase in corporate and foundation support, contributed
mightily to the FY ’13 growth trajectory, inspiring and encouraging the Board of Directors to
proceed confidently with addressing two major capital needs: the purchase of new electronic
medical records software, and the acquisition of temporary leased office space as a prelude
to a long-term space planning project.
James R. Otepka
Executive Director
While our fundraising success and a healthier bottom line were key factors behind the
agency’s success in FY ’13, they do not tell the whole story. As is usually the case in the nonprofit world, it was the human resources — dedicated, skilled and hard-working staff, and
hundreds of volunteers and supporters within our organizational family, that were ultimately
responsible for fueling our re-emergence over the past year. It’s been said that for the non-profit
organization, “There is no mission without money.” True enough, but it is also a fundamental
truth that for organizations like TriCity Family Services, there is no money without people who
actively support our mission and generate the resources that make our work possible. TCFS’
re-emergence in FY ’13 was not simply a function of economic recovery. At a deeper level, it was
the result of people who gave gifts of time, talent, compassionate care and in-kind-service:
our board members and board-level volunteers, the Friends of TCFS, and our skilled and
dedicated staff. There is also one additional intangible resource that will continue to fuel
our success as an agency, the inspiration of your kindness and enduring support. Thank you
so much!

TriCity Family Services is a leader in providing
counseling and other mental health services for
children and teens, their families, and community
members across all income levels and life stages.
Counseling
Family-Based Treatment for Eating Disorders
Counseling is at the core of our work at TriCity Family Services.
We serve all ages and all income levels with quality, affordable
counseling services for issues occurring across the family
life cycle.
Our family-centered, outpatient approach recognizes that
parents and caregivers are the best resource for their child’s
recovery from an eating disorder. This program provides
a caring and supportive environment for children, teens, young
adults, and their families. FBT empowers parents to take
an active role in resolving their child’s disordered eating and
restoring weight to a healthy range. This program helps
families dealing with:
As an innovator in the field of family-based counseling for
children and adolescents since 1967, our experienced mental
health professionals know and understand the special needs
of children and teens. In addition, our clinicians help adults,
couples, and older adults address issues like depression,
marital discord, grief, divorce, domestic violence, parenting,
stress, communication problems, sexual abuse, phobias,
anxiety, and depression.
By accepting a wide array of private insurance, public benefits,
and offering a sliding-fee scale to those residing in our funded
service area, we ensure that no one is ever denied services
based on an inability to pay.

Occupational Services
We offer a wide variety of innovative group programs
and workshops designed to proactively impact the lives
of individuals considered to be at risk of developing
mental health and/or substance abuse problems, and
promote individual and family wellness and education:
We have several contracts with local businesses, municipal
governments, and other local employers to provide an
Employee Assistance Program (EAP) as part of their
employee benefits package. Community-based, and able to
provide personal, immediate, and face-to-face attention,
our EAP provides multiple benefits over a typical “800
number” EAP. It is a free and confidential service that
offers assistance to employees and their family members
who are experiencing any type of mental health or personal
problem. For employers, it is a positive approach that helps
employees resolve personal problems before they begin to
affect their jobs.

2012–2013 Agency Highlights
TriCity Family Services was honored
to receive a grant from the Taproot
Foundation to assist with the agency’s
marketing and messaging strategies.
A pro-bono consultant team worked
closely with staff and volunteers to
craft tailored messages that would
resonate with our key audiences and
increase awareness for TCFS and its
services throughout the Tri City area.
The Corporate Partner in Caring program
raised $38,000 for the agency. We are
grateful for the ongoing and generous
support of the following Corporate Partners
in Caring:
Our Annual Benefit, “All That Glitters”, was held on
April 20, 2013, and exceeded everyone’s expectations.
Over 360 guests helped raise $144,000 in support of
the agency’s mental health services — a new record!
The 2nd Annual Golden Heart Awards were presented
to Jack and Ginny Young, The Dellora A. and Lester J.
Norris Foundation, and the Exchange Club of the Tri
Cities. The event was organized by first-time Benefit
Chair Lori Georgeson and the Friends of TriCity Family
Services, and it was truly a turning point in the
evolution of our biggest special event of the year.
Cadence Health presented TCFS with a $25,000 grant to provide counseling
services to area residents in financial need. These grant funds were used to
create scholarships for low-income clients, creating session fees as low as
$10, $5, or less. We are grateful for the support of Cadence Health as we strive
to serve people across all life stages, regardless of their ability to pay.

2013 ANNUAL REPORT | 2012–2013 Agency Highlights
Greg Watson, Senior Clinician/Consultant, celebrated
25 years with the agency in March, 2013. Fondly known
as “Pancho”, Greg is the co-creator and facilitator of
the annual Wilderness Challenge Program and has been
facilitating our graduate intern training program since
1994. Congratulations Greg!
TriCity Family Services presented the 28th Annual William D. Barth Award to
Carolyn Sprawka. Carolyn has been a Hesed House volunteer for over 25 years
and a member of the Board of Directors for 20 years. As President of the Board
of Directors of Hesed House, Carolyn has steered the agency in significant
expansions and improvements in services with her outstanding leadership,
wisdom, and ethics. Carolyn is an active volunteer at the Geneva United
Methodist Church and a member of the Illinois Coalition to End Homelessness.
She has devoted her life to the service of people who are homeless or struggling,
and the community has no doubt benefitted from her compassionate service.
With unseasonably warm temperatures,
and not a snowflake in sight, registration
for the 4th Annual Snowflake Shuffle
soared to a record-breaking 712
participants. Geneva Mayor Kevin
Burns helped kick-off the event, which
took place in Geneva’s Mill Creek
neighborhood. Even Santa Claus himself
came out to support TCFS!
Kristie Dienst was presented with the 15th Annual
Judy Burgess Award for Volunteer Service. In addition
to serving as chair of the Annual Benefit in 2008
and 2009, Kristie played an essential role in the
creation and start-up of the agency’s Snowflake
Shuffle 5K, Poinsettia Sale, and Savory Sips event.
Her remarkable leadership skills grew special event
revenue from $64,000 to over $103,000 in one year.
We are very fortunate to have Kristie as an active
member of our Friends auxiliary.
2012–2013 PROGRAM Highlights | 2013 ANNUAL REPORT
2012–2013 Program Highlights
Family-Based Treatment of
Eating Disorders (FBT)
The Family-Based Treatment of Eating Disorders (FBT) pilot
program was launched in January of 2013. This program,
based on the successful Maudsley Approach developed by
Drs. Lock and Le Grange, provides family-centered, outpatient
therapy for children, teens and young adults struggling with
an eating disorder.
The pilot was approved for up to five clients in order to
evaluate the efficacy of the model and assess the agency’s
readiness to offer an extensive new program to the community.
Three clients participated and demonstrated successful
progression through the program’s three phases. The phases
include establishing healthy eating and restoring weight,
returning control of eating to the client, and addressing family
and normal adolescent developmental issues.
According to the FBT approach, the family is seen as a resource
for the child’s recovery rather than as the source of the problem.
Parents are empowered to take control as they provide the
type and amount of food needed to restore their child’s health.
Families learn to separate the illness from the child and
eventually re-establish healthy identities and relationships.
All along, the TCFS therapist guides, assists, and encourages
the family. FBT is a team approach, often times involving
the family physician and other partners the family chooses
to include.
The Board of Directors voted to move forward with the program
in July. TriCity Family Services is now one of a select number
of FBT providers in the region.
Chick Chat
The first annual Chick Chat program, a collaboration between
TCFS, Helping Girls Navigate Adolescence, Inc. (HGNA),
Geneva School District 304, and the Geneva Coalition for
Youth, was held in February at Geneva Middle School
North. A one-day program open to 4th, 5th, and 6th grade
girls throughout the Tri City area, the program aims to help
girls find the confidence to “fearlessly be themselves”.
Professional facilitators led the girls in learning how to build
stronger relationships, exploring personal strengths, making
healthy decisions, and developing their unique sense of self.
Nearly 100 girls attended this inaugural event, and we look
forward to expanding the program each year. Girls who
participated shared:
“I learned to be myself, and not be
afraid to be who I am.”
“Sometimes you have to stand up for
what you think is right.”
“Be a leader, not a follower.”
“I learned to be confident and make
new friends.”

2013 ANNUAL REPORT | 2012–2013 Program HIGHLIGHTS
International Child Development Program
Michelle Clark, Coordinator of Community Services, was first
introduced to Changing Children's Worlds Foundation (CCWF)
in the Fall of 2012. Realizing that both CCWF and TCFS were
working to achieve healthy and supportive environments for
children, adolescents, and families, she suggested that the
agencies collaborate. Michelle was trained as a facilitator for
the International Child Development Program-USA. ICDPUSA presents guidelines for positive adult-child interactions
that are simple to understand and lead to stronger and more
empathetic relationships between parents and their children.
Parents participate in group sessions over several weeks
and learn how to experience their children in a positive way,
strengthen their own self-confidence, create meaningful
dialogues with their children, and build a culture of play and
cooperative activities. Every parent and caregiver could benefit
from the ICDP-USA program. TCFS and CCWF hope to bring
this program into the schools, reaching even more families,
and creating lasting change throughout the community.
Teen Girls Retreat
Three retreats were held in FY13, providing girls with an
opportunity to learn how to engage in positive behavior even
when experiencing difficult thoughts or emotions. According to
retreat facilitator Mira Dahlheim, “I want to provide girls with
an opportunity to be kind to themselves and to one another.
This is an area where young girls often struggle.”
The retreat is typically held in Lake Geneva and includes
up to eight girls. Throughout the weekend, the girls learn
skills to deal with difficult emotions, build self-awareness,
and become better at managing relationships.
When asked about her retreat experience, one girl shared,
“My greatest emotional highlight was when I let all of my
walls that I’ve been building fall down.” Another participant
said she learned to “love and enjoy being me.”
Wilderness Challenge Program
Our 24th annual Wilderness Challenge Program took place
in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area of Minnesota from June
19–26, with 29 teens participating. The teens displayed
great resilience through their journey, which included lengthy
portages, extreme heat, and relentless mosquitoes.
The program is made available each year on a full scholarship
basis to 30 teens (ages 13–15) at risk of a difficult transition
to high school. By design, and through Mother Nature’s
own challenges, participants are constantly confronted with
stretching their own limits. In doing so, they become aware
of previously untapped physical, mental, and emotional
capabilities. Facing new challenges personally, and as
members of a group, they learn new communication and
problem-solving skills, discover how to handle their negative
feelings more effectively, and develop new friendships.
By facing these new challenges without the assistance of
drugs or alcohol, participants learn to succeed without them.
