A N N FROM THE CHAIRMAN Dear Friends and Supporters, For the Board of Directors, I am honored to present to you the 2013 audited financials and Annual Report of Crossroads Rhode Island. Our auditors, Lefkowitz, Garfinkel, Champi & DeRienzo, have completed their examination and verification of our books and once again found no reportable conditions. This is the highest compliment FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, I am very proud to present to you the Crossroad Rhode Island 2013 Annual Report. This is an opportunity to spotlight our highlights and share some of our experiences from 2013 with you. Notably, keys are symbolic of our efforts and many successes in securing stable housing for our clients throughout the year. Your commitment and generosity are key to all that we were able to accomplish. One of the more significant events for Crossroads Rhode Island during 2013 was the revision of our mission from “helping the homeless and U A L R E P O R T 2 0 1 3 to Crossroads management and stewardship of your donations. You can be assured that this agency is using your contributions effectively and efficiently. Nearly 80 cents of every dollar goes directly towards programs and services—well within the standard guidelines for nonprofit management. I’m proud to be associated with Crossroads Rhode Island and am grateful for the support of the community which allows us to continue the work of our mission. In 2013, Crossroads re-focused this mission on secur- ing stable homes for homeless or at-risk individuals and families. With that strengthened, guiding principle, we assisted hundreds of individuals and families to move from homelessness to being stably housed. Your support is key to these accomplishments. Thank you for your compassionate generosity. disconnected as they journey toward a better quality of life” to “helping homeless or at-risk individuals and families secure stable homes.” This means that while we remain steadfast in our efforts to support individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Rhode Island, we have shifted to a much stronger emphasis on moving them into housing as quickly and effectively as possible. We have been working with our front line social service staff to provide them with the tools and resources necessary to make this shift. We are implementing new “best practice” tools to measure and assess the level of need that our clients have — tools that will help us effectively allocate our limited resources to those with the greatest need first. Ultimately, our clients will have keys which will open the door to their own home. Crossroads is often the last source of hope to our state’s most vulnerable residents. Most often, these neighbors need just a little help to move forward again. Your contributions help us continue to provide the programs and supportive services that they require to overcome barriers and, ultimately, lead them out of their homeless circumstances into stable housing. Once again, on behalf of Crossroads and those whom we serve, thank you for your continued generosity. Sincerely, Jack McConnell, Chairman Crossroads Board of Directors Anne Nolan, President Crossroads Rhode Island THE MISSION of Crossroads Rhode Island is to help homeless or at-risk individuals and families secure stable homes. Those we serve achieve this by engaging in our range of services including housing, basic needs, shelter, case management, referrals, and education and employment services. 1 C R O S S R O A D S R H O D E I S L A N D SENIOR HOMELESSNESS IS GROWING Growth in the number of homeless people over age 50 is the latest trend in Rhode Island and across the country is a trend that Crossroads Rhode Island believed warranted both attention and action. Culhane found in 2012 that, nationally, half of the chronically homeless fell between the ages of 51 and 61. He projects that those numbers will double over the next three years. Hirsch noted in an interview, “we are definitely seeing a very large increase in people over 50 becoming “Harold Lewis House is one of the homeless.. best places in the world to be...” “I certainly think that’s something “Harold Lewis House is to pay attenone of the best places in the tion to and world to be,” he said in the rerespond to port. “It is quiet and peaceful and get these here, and everything you need people into is really close by.” A N N U A L R E P O R T 2 0 1 3 FORTY-SIX UNITS OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING ADDED IN NORTH KINGSTOWN In August 2013, Crossroads premiered its newest housing facility, Kingstown Crossing II. THE WOMEN’S CENTER OF RHODE ISLAND AFFILIATES WITH CROSSROADS RHODE ISLAND We were pleased to announce that on February 1, 2013 The Women’s Center of Rhode Island signed an affiliation agreement with Crossroads Rhode Island This affiliation enabled us to address the connection between domestic violence and homelessness and is moving both organizations towards becoming national leaders in integrating trauma and domestic violence services with those that address homelessness. Both organizations recognized that this female population has a continuum of need that is broader than either organization can meet on its own. The goals of intervention for both agencies are comparable: safety and the ability to live independently for those who have experienced domestic violence. 4 For almost 40 years, The Women’s Center of Rhode Island had been providing hope for a better tomorrow to victims of domestic violence. We are assured that this affiliation is a positive step in improving the quality and accessibility of services for the individuals and families that we serve. Standing (L-R): J. Due in large part to their dedicated generosity, we were able to host three signature events that raised $565,000 for our organization. The funds are critical to our ability to continue providing programs and services to the families and individuals who come to us for help. Women Helping Women drew hundreds of females from the professional community, as well colleagues and personal friends, to support Crossroads Women’s Shelter and programs to help women at Crossroads. Men on a Mission, the male counterpart to Women Helping Women, was once again wellreceived by professional businessmen and civic leaders from all corners of Rhode Island. Our premiere fundraising event is held each September. It is the hallmark of the social fundraising season and reinvented annually with a newly choreographed theme and venue. In 2013, over 500 guests saddledup for an evening of unbridled fun to attend Down The Homestretch! It was a race to the finish line to raise funds and increase awareness for those men women and children who are struggling and working hard each day to cross the finish line into their own stable homes. 5 CROSSROADS RHODE ISLAND AND AFFILIATE OPERATIONS Crossroads Operating Temporarily Restricted LIHTC Properties* 2013 Total Grants & Contracts $4,052,379 $398,893 $113,693 $4,564,965 Rents, Sales, Program Fees — Program Services + Developer’s Fee 1,753,893 - 1,988,783 3,742,676 Contributions — Contributions + Special Events Including Expenses 2,775,552 140,195 - 2,915,747 192,679 - - 192,679 - 119,175 - 119,175 3,949 - 58,956 62,905 $8,778,452 $658,263 $2,161,432 $11,598,147 $5,084,406 $ - $ - $5,084,406 1,516,178 - 3,457,815 4,973,993 911,240 - - 911,240 Facility, Security, General & Admin 1,052,268 - - 1,052,268 Fundraising — Includes Fundraising Expense 1,225,368 - - 1,225,368 89,960 - - 89,960 $3,457,815 $13,337,235 ($1,296,383) ($1,739,088) Donated Goods & Services Forgiveness of Debt Other Total Revenue Shelter & Housing Programs Property Management Education & Job Training Miscelleneous Total Expenses $9,879,420 Surplus/(Loss) ($1,100,968) $ - $658,263 Items not flowing through P&L: ADD: Depreciation & Amortization $733,063 Deferred Interest 142,018 Operating Support from Syndication & Financing LESS: Mortgage Payments Addition to reserve accounts $1,072,703 $1,805,766 - 103,060 245,078 - - 311,561 311,561 (4,590) - (68,260) (72,850) - (58,499) (58,499) $658,263 $64,182 $491,968 - $ - ($230,477) *Low-Income Housing Tax Credits comprised of Travelers Aid Housing LP, Kingstown Crossings, LP and Kinstown Crossings II LP Crossroads Revenue Donated Goods & Services 2% Program Fees & Rents 20% Contributions 32% 6 Grants & Contracts 46% Crossroads Expenses Shelter & Housing Programs 52% Fundraising 12% Miscellaneous 1% Facility, Security General & Administration 11% Property Management 15% These statements have been summarized from our audited financial statements.
