Everything happened in a formulaic way. Using Antigone as an example, here is how the formula would work: The Prologue: (The Prologue is the tragedy’s opening scene that sets the framework and tone for the rest of the play.) This is the scene between Antigone and her sister Ismene, in which Creon’s edict, Antigone’s decision to defy it, and the theme of the conflict between man’s laws and those of the gods, are all revealed. The Parodos: (The Parodos is the entrance of the 12-15 men who generally made up the Chorus. They would have marched onto the stage singing The earlier the drama, the more important the Chorus would have been. As playwrights added actors to the basic formula, the Chorus’ importance would have lessened. The Chorus gave background information to make the plot flow smoothly and be easy to follow, sometimes spoke for the opinions of the general citizenry, and sometimes brought up points to be considered by the characters. The Chorus’ parts would occur between the Episodes of the tragedy. Their parts would be sung or chanted, though in the version of Antigone that we used, the parts are in prose instead of verse, and thus we often say that the Chorus speak instead of saying that they sing. In this case, the Chorus enter and sing/speak an ode recounting the battle in which Polyneices and Eteocles died. The First Episode: (The Episodes are similar to what we would recognize as the scenes in a modern-day drama. The main action of the play occurs in the Episodes.) The Episode here is Creon’s proclamation, his explanation of how he will rule, and the entrance and exit of the guard who explains that the edict has been disobeyed. The First Stasimon: (A Stasimon is an ode or speech from the Chorus that comes after an Episode.) In this first one, the Chorus tell of the wonders of mankind. Second Episode: This is when the guard reveals Antigone’s deed, Creon questions Antigone, she defies him, Creon becomes suspicious of Ismene, it is revealed that Antigone is betrothed to Haemon, and both sisters are led away by guards. Second Stasimon: This is the Chorus’ speaking about the sorrows of the house of the Labdacidae. Third Episode: Here Haemon enters into debate with his father about Antigone’s deed. Creon is proud and decides to stick with his earlier decision, and Haemon leaves saying that his father will never see him again. Third Stasimon: Now the Chorus speaks of love and its power over men. Fourth Episode: Antigone is led out to her death. Fourth Stasimon: The Chorus this time says an ode about all the other men who have faced great adversity. Fifth Episode: Teiresias, the blind prophet, warns Creon that his people are upset about the edict, but Creon defies the prophet. In myth, it is said that Teiresias, who was in Thebes from the time of its founding, had been changed into a woman for a time after seeing two snakes copulating. Zeus and Hera, the god and goddess, asked him who had more pleasure in sex, men or women. Teiresias said that women do, for which Hera blinded him and Zeus gave him inner sight. Teiresias leaves Creon with a prophesy. Creon then realizes that he has made a mistake and tries to rectify it. Fifth Stasimon: The Chorus’ ode is to Bacchus. Exodos: The Exodos is the marching off stage of all actors and the Chorus after all of the play’s action is over.) The messenger comes in and reveals that Antigone and Haemon are both dead. Eurydice learns the news of her son’s death and takes her own life. Creon, having just suffered the death of his son, learns of his wife’s death. Creon is broken hearted and starts to wander away. Creon exits the stage, and the Chorus have the final words before also exiting. Every Greek tragedy followed more or less this same pattern. The audience, then, wasn’t surprised by anything that they saw on stage but would have been attentive to subtle differences in the way that the playwright worked within the formulae. Around 4:30 a.m., the beams of they're houses began creaking and popping. The frames shuddered. Then the floors started to roll gently, like the deck of a boat. These people were feeling the effects of a majpr earthquake centered near Los Angeles, one hundred miles to the south. What causes earthquakes such as the one that struck sounther California? Like many complicated quesOons, this one has several answers. Earthquakes have a numbe rof causes, both remote and immediate. Causes of earthquakes involve the earth's deep structure. The earth's outer crust of dirt and rock is solid but not very thick. It rests on a thicker but much less solid layer the mantle composed of rock heated to the consiistency of warm tar. The mantle is not exactly liquid, but it is far from firm. Heat currents from the earth's fiery core rise up through the mantle, and it stays constant, sluggish moOon. The earth's firm crust has broken into several large plates. The cracks, or faults, between the plates allow the crust to flex as the mantle moves. Smaller faults within wach plate permit further moOon. Most of this moOon is so gradual that people don't even feel it. However, in CLA Standards: Writing Applications 2.1 some places, the edges of the faults may be grinding against each other, or one edge may be gradually forced under another. This causes increasing pressure. FricOon keeps the rocks in the two edges from sliding smoothly past one another, and the growing pressure on the rock layers actually forces them to bend. In these rock layers, other forces come into play. Eventually, the rocks along one edge reach a point at which they can no longer bend.
