Local 653 Fact Finder Minneapolis, MN http://ufcw653.org Vol.52, No.11, November 2014 HALLOWEEN HARVEST FESTIVAL 2014 By President Matt Utecht Sunday, October 26, 2014, was the classic “Indian Summer” day at Camp 653 in Monticello. The temperature was in the low 60s, a few high wispy clouds, Lake Ida was sparkling blue. This would be a day for families to get away from work and those fall chores around the house and enjoy time with their children or grandchildren. The activities for the day included hay rides, face painting, pumpkin decorating, campfires, and kids dressed up in their Halloween costumes. As kids ran around the campground laughing and playing, parents and grandparents sipped hot coffee and apple cider, and enjoyed hot dogs and brats fresh off the grill. Once the horse-drawn wagon was ready it would not have an empty seat on it the rest of the day. The Halloween Harvest Festival is one of my favorite Local 653 events of the year. It’s so nice to see our members away from work, meet their extended family members, and watch everyone interacting in such a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere. Our membership works hard every day and deserves a day to themselves every once in a while—a time to relax, visit, and get away from life’s day-to-day responsibilities. The next Local 653 family event is right around the corner. “Breakfast with Santa” will be held at Hall 653 on Saturday, December 6. (For information on Breakfast with Santa, see page 6.) It’s another wonderful family event and I look forward to seeing you there! Meat Masters Members Ratify Two-Year Deal! By Secretary-Treasurer Paul Crandall On October 3, 2014, Local 653 members working at the Meat Masters Sausage plant in Annandale voted to accept a new two-year contract. The contract provided wage improvements for part-time and full-time in both years, maintenance of Health & Welfare benefits at no cost to the employee, addition of paid personal holidays, jury duty, rest periods and additional contract language to include leaves of absence, vacation selection and scheduling. There was also an increase in contributions by the employer to the employees’ retirement plan. made with the freshest ingredients and are delicious. The members at this plant produce product that is sold in all Jerry’s Foods stores, their Cub stores, and Corporate Cub Foods stores. The fresh bratwurst, Polish, Italian, breakfast sausage and chorizo are all I want to thank Jeremy Holderness from the plant for serving on the negotiating committee (he did an outstanding job representing his coworkers) and President Matt Utecht for his hard work in securing a good contract for everyone! Minnesota AFL-CIO Convention By Jim Schommer The 52nd Constitutional Convention of the Minnesota AFL-CIO was held September 21-23, 2014. I had the privilege of attending it with fellow Delegates Local 653 President Matt Utecht, Secretary-Treasurer Paul Crandall, Doug Rigert, and Alternate Delegate Rick Milbrath. Our local, UFCW Local 653, along with President Matt Utecht, was recognized as a new affiliate by Minnesota AFL-CIO President Shar Knutson. At the convention many resolutions were voted on. There were a lot of different educational workshops to attend along with many vendors selling or promoting their services. We listened to many speakers throughout the three days. Many were politicians, including Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton, United States Senator Al Franken, United States Senator Amy Klobuchar, United States Representative Betty McCollum, Senate Assistant Majority Leader Senator Katie Sieben, Speaker of the House Representative Paul Thissen, State Auditor Rebecca Otto and Steve Simon, Candidate for Secretary of State. Senator Amy Klobuchar addressed the AFL-CIO Convention There were also a lot of other speakers on many different topics. The convention ended with the re-election of officers. It was a very interesting and educational convention, and it was an honor to be chosen as a delegate. November 2014 - Fact Finder - Page 4 Thanksgiving – Volunteers Only! By Greg Larson Yes, there are mixed feelings about stores being open on Thanksgiving, but most important is that those stores that choose to be open on Thanksgiving CAN ONLY BE STAFFED BY VOLUNTEERS WHO SIGN UP TO WORK ON A POSTED SIGN-UP SHEET. Also, the employer shall provide the union a copy of the signed posting. If there are not enough employees signing up to volunteer to work, the store will not be open for business. Please keep in mind that the choice is each individual employee’s decision whether to work on the Thanksgiving holiday or to enjoy being with their family and friends. If, however, you decide to volunteer and sign the posted sign-up sheet, there are some provisions in the contract language that apply to the Thanksgiving holiday week. First and foremost is that with Thanksgiving, there is contract language that refers to holiday qualifications and eligibility that still apply. If you are a full-time employee who has signed up and volunteered and have been chosen to work on Thanksgiving, you will be scheduled a 40-hour work week and also receive eight hours of holiday pay. You also have the option to elect to postpone your holiday pay just like a summer holiday or New Year’s Day. You must work the holiday to bank it. If you are a full-time employee and do not work on Thanksgiving, you will be scheduled a 32hour work week and receive eight hours of holiday pay for not working on Thanksgiving. If you are a modified or regular part-time employee and DO NOT SIGN UP TO VOLUNTEER to work on Thanksgiving, you will receive four hours of holiday pay for not working on Thanksgiving. If you volunteer to work on Thanksgiving, you will also receive four hours of holiday pay besides pay for the hours that you work. If you are a modified or regular part-time employee who has completed ten or more years of service, whether you elect to volunteer to work Thanksgiving or not you will receive six hours of holiday pay. Also, remember that a modified or regular part-time employee who works on Thanksgiving also has the option to elect to postpone your holiday pay just like a summer holiday or New Year’s Day. You must work the holiday in order to bank it. There is no premium pay for working the Thanksgiving holiday. Remember that as a member of Local 653 it is your option under the contract to sign up to volunteer on the sign-up sheet! No one else has the right to sign you up or pressure you to work on Thanksgiving. Any questions, please don’t hesitate to call your union business agent at 763-525-1500. By Matt Utecht Isn’t it amazing how fast time flies? Before you know it we will have snow on the ground and Christmas will be upon us. On Saturday, December 6, 2014, UFCW Local 653 will be hosting the FIFTH ANNUAL BREAKFAST WITH SANTA CLAUS here at Hall 653!! The fun will begin at 9.00 a.m. with a great breakfast served by Santa’s elves. Following breakfast, with a call of “Now Dasher! Now Dancer! Now Prancer and Vixen, On Comet! On Cupid! On Donner and Blitzen!” and a round of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” Santa will arrive to read some Christmas stories to the children and their parents. Then Santa Claus and his elves will pass out gift bags to the children. Santa will then be available to all the children so that they can sit on his lap and tell him what they would like for Christmas and give Mom and Dad the opportunity to take pictures with the children sitting on Santa’s lap. This event will give our union members the opportunity to have their children or grandchildren eat breakfast with Santa and not have to fight the crowds at the shopping malls, and I know that you will not find a better deal anywhere. The cost of Breakfast with Santa Claus is $8.00 per person. If you are interested in attending this year’s Breakfast with Santa, please fill out the form below and send it--along with $8.00 per person (checks payable to UFCW Local 653)--to: UFCW Local 653 13000 63rd Ave N Maple Grove, MN 55369 Payment must accompany your registration. The deadline for registration is Friday, November 28. We will confirm your reservations via email when we receive your form and payment. If you do not have an email address, we will mail a confirmation letter to the address that the union office has on file. I suggest that you sign up early, as the breakfast will fill up fast! Toys for Tots For the fifth consecutive year, Local 653 is joining with the United States Marine Corp’s Toys for Tots program to collect toys for children who might otherwise not have something special to open this Christmas. We will begin accepting new, unwrapped toys for the 2014 Toys for Tots campaign on November 3 at our office at 13000 63rd Avenue North in Maple Grove. You can also bring your donation to this year’s Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, December 6. Please consider making a donation of a toy this holiday season. We know that money may be tight, but please consider the children who are less fortunate than we are. Let’s try again to bring a smile to the face of a young child this Christmas who may not have a lot to smile about without your help. HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!!! November 2014 - Fact Finder - Page 9 framework for the new building began in the fall of 2013. In July of 2013, groundwork was started for the new Byerly’s store in Edina. Initial construction consisted of making temporary access to the old store during construction, and putting in a parking lot. There was a lot of dirt moved out to get the ground to the level needed for building the new store. The actual The old location, which opened in 1973, locked its doors at midnight on September 17, 2013. Tearing down the original store began the following week. There are eight employees who worked at the Edina store when it opened in 1973 who are still with the company. One of them--Kathi Jacobs--has never left the Edina location in her 41 years with the company! All eight were presented with a brick from the original store. The new Edina store opened its doors at 6:30 p.m. on September 18 for their grand opening, which included the mayor of Edina, live music, demonstrations, and introductions of the store management team and department managers and their teams. The new Byerly’s has everything you would expect from the meat, deli and café and produce departments. They also have added a two-level patio where you can sit and enjoy your meal from the Creations Café, and an upstairs mezzanine where you can enjoy a glass of wine or one of the eight hyper-local brews they have on tap.
