Health Tip – National Cancer Control Month FIVE TIPS: TO HELP PREVENT CANCER Focus on plant-based foods. Include a variety of colorful fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and beans in your diet. Limit refined sugars and artificial ingredients. The less processed these foods are, the better! Include probiotics and fermented foods. Optimizing gut flora will reduce inflammation and help strengthen the immune system. Do not smoke cigarettes. Smoking has been linked to a variety of cancers far beyond lung cancer. If you smoke, talk with your doctor about quitting. Make physical activity a regular part of the day. Regular physical activity each day can help you maintain a healthy weight and prevent the development of certain cancers associated with obesity. Aim for 150 minutes of moderate activity each week. Include stress management techniques. Chronic stress from all causes is a major contributor to disease. Many diseases can be rooted in emotional factors. Take time for yourself to relax and engage in a stress management technique that works for you: deep breathing, massage, walking, yoga, guided imagery, etc. Be sure you are getting at least 7 – 9 hours of quality sleep each night.
