Director’s Notes 3 MARCH 2016 The Brigade Boxing Open, West Point Spouses Club Casino Night, Society of Women Engineers Conference and presentation of Disney's Beauty and the Beast were busy but spectacular events at Eisenhower Hall last weekend. Special thanks to the Department of Physical Education, Directorate of Public Works, Department of Emergency Services and the entire DCA team for the support to make these events Women of Ireland 5 March, 2016 Ike Theatre 8:00 pm so great. In club activity last week, The Tae Kwon Do team won the gold medal in the Men's Advanced and Women's Beginner Divisions at the Eastern Collegiate Taekwondo Conference Tournament - a tournament with 450 fighters from 32 colleges. Additionally, the Army Crew team brought home bronze from the 2016 C.R.A.S.H.-B World Championships. As you read through this week's update, please note the number of record setting personal and team accomplishments this past weekend throughout our club activities. Congratulations to all thecadets and teams on your achievements! This will be another busy week for our clubs. The Ultimate Frisbee Team will host a two-day tournament with seven teams competing; the Speech and Parliamentary Debate Team will host several colleges and universities in a tournament here; and Men's Team Handball will compete against Air Force on Friday afternoon and Navy on Saturday in a home tournament at Arvin Gym. COL Tom Hansbarger Director of Cadet Activities COMPETITIVE CLUBS Boxing (Women’s) On 26 Feb., the Army West Point Women’s Boxing team participated in the Brigade Boxing Open held in Crest Hall The BDE Boxing Open was a spectacular event in which four of the female boxers competed against one another in front of a very large audience CDT Michelle Lopez beat CDT Soumya Sreerame in the 112 lb weight class; and CDT Esther Nagila defeated CDT Sarah Soliven in the 119lb weight class On 27 Feb., the Women’s Boxing team competed in the Lock Haven University Invitational in Lock Haven, PA There, they competed in six scheduled female bouts, four in the afternoon and two in the evening CDT Michelle Lopez was the first bout of the afternoon, winning by decision in the third round CDT Sarah Soliven was the second bout of the afternoon; although she put in great effort, she lost by a decision CDT Mikaila Wiitanen and CDT Rachelle David were the next two bouts; CDT Wiitanen won her bout, demonstrating both skill and determination; CDT David lost her fight by decision, but showed a lot of improvement CDT Sarah Gould also fought a hard battle, but ultimately lost the decision The last fight of the day was with CDT Esther Naglia, who earned another win for the team Crew This past weekend, the Army West Point Crew team made history with the Women’s Team Captain, CDT Catherine Browning (‘16), earning a bronze medal in the 2016 C.R.A.S.H.-B World Indoor Rowing Championships in Boston, MA The team sent 13 cadets to compete in the grueling race, where each athlete is required to row 2000 meters on an ergometer, an indoor rowing machine, against elite competitors from across the world Shattering her old West Point 2K record by more than three seconds, CDT Browning finished with a time of 6:58.6 in the Open Women’s Division, the premiere event of the day The unprecedented effort put her in 3rd place out of 155 competitors, while earning her the top spot in the collegiate category (1st of 122) CDT Chris Wagner (‘18) was the top Army rower in the Open Men’s Division, pulling a personal record of 6:14.7 (just two seconds off the Army record), to earn him a finish of 29th out of 179 participants, and 18th out of 89 collegiate qualifiers CDT Charlie Toch (‘18) followed closely behind with a time of 6:14.7 to put him in 34th place The fastest novice women, CDT Sarah Boelter (‘19) finished 42nd place with an impressive time of 6:37.0 It was a superb showing by Army Crew on an international stage COMPETITIVE CLUBS Volleyball (Men) On 27 Feb., the Army West Point Men’s Volleyball team travelled to Syracuse, NY, to compete in the divisional playoffs The team went undefeated during pool play, but unfortunately had a setback during the first round of the playoffs Despite the loss, the team was able to secure a spot in the Regional Championships at Penn State in April Additionally, on numerous occasions the cadets demonstrated winning with integrity calling themselves on plays that were missed by the referees Powerlifting This past weekend, the Army West Point Powerlifting team competed at the Massachusetts Winter Classic in Rockland, MA The primary goal of this trip was to qualify all competing lifters for Collegiate Nationals The objective was achieved 100%, with many lifters posting personal bests and meeting big milestones in their progression The Men won the Team Championship in the Raw category by a wide margin CDT Stephen Porada (18 years old; 220 lbs) pulled a 600 lbs. deadlift in his very first powerlifting meet to win his weight class CDT Celeste Taniguchi showed great determination and grit grinding out a tough bench press to stay in the meet after she missed the weight her previous two attempts CDT Seth Kirchner won the open and junior divisions of his weight class; CDT Jake Weiss placed third; CDT Lee Kantowski placed second in the junior division; CDT Austin Martin won the open and junior divisions in his weight class; and CDT Jory Heath placed third in the junior division In their very first powerlifting meet, CDT Mackenzie Garner won the open and junior divisions in her weight class, while CDT Annette Yoon placed third in the junior division The team is now postured to compete for a championship at Collegiate Nationals in April SUPPORT CLUBS Ski Patrol On 20 Feb., the USMA Ski Patrol club conducted training at the Butternut Ski Area in Massachusetts Although it was a warm day, the cadets enjoyed the granular snow and spring-like skiing conditions Candidates were able to practice ski and board skills, though they did not have the opportunity to conduct sled training due to the high traffic on the mountain Pipes and Drums SUPPORT CLUBS On 27 Feb., the USMA Pipes and Drums club travelled to Albany, NY, to compete in the EUSPBA Quartet Competition In the solo competition, the three cadets that played placed second, third, and fourth in their grade The effort and focus put into the solos will pay dividends for the band, since solos are the best way to work on technique In the quartet competition, the cadets placed fourth The judges’ comments and critique will be helpful in preparation for the upcoming Military Tattoo, and later for the ArmyNavy competition next year Furthermore, the quartet was composed of mostly junior playing pipers in order to prepare them for more prominent roles and performances in the upcoming year Aside from competing, the group met and re-introduced themselves to several members of the piping community in upstate New York Glee Club The West Point Glee Club travelled to Wilmington, DE, on 2628 Feb. to perform at various venues in the community The club first performed for 300 students at Alexis I. DuPont High School on Friday afternoon, including a presentation by three cadets with details about the academic, military, and physical pillars at West Point The cadets also enjoyed talking with many students about West Point and career opportunities after the concert Later that day, some of the cadets visited a historical site of DuPont gunpowder and machinery production from the early 1800s On Saturday, the West Point Glee Club performed in the Loudis Recital Hall on the University of Delaware campus; they were joined for the last two songs by the University of Delaware Concert Choir One of the crowd favorites was when the Club CIC invited all USMA grads to the stage to proudly sing the West Point Alma Mater Parachute On 27 April, the Army West Point Parachute team went to Poughkeepsie, NY, to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity This was a great opportunity for the whole team not only to help the community, but also to have an incredible team bonding experience While at the site, the team organized their new warehouse, which will server as a “store” to furnish the houses that they build in there are in the future At another location, the team was divided into two groups One group was tasked with painting one of the finished houses, while the other group put up a fence Overall, the team had a great experience, and are happy to have volunteered their time to a cause that will positively impact some one else HOBBY CLUBS Skeet and Trap On 21 Feb., sixteen members of the West Point Skeet and Trap team travelled to Hawthorne, NY, where they were hosted by members of the Mount Pleasant Sportsman’s Club Cadets participated in a day of trap shooting were they shot 100 targets including both 16-yard and handicap singles At the conclusion of the day’s events, the cadets handily defeated the Mt. Pleasant shooters, but a good time was had by all Tae Kwon Do This past weekend, the Army West Point Tae Kwon Do team travelled to Princeton, NJ to compete in the Princeton Eastern Collegiate Taekwondo Conference Tournament The tournament was the largest on record for Princeton with over 450 fighters from 32 colleges The Army Men’s advanced team won gold in their first tournament as a team The Army Women’s beginner team also won gold, with the Army Men’s beginner team taking home silver The Men’s black belt team finished with a bronze medal All in all it was a 246 point performance that included three knockouts and put the team over 900 points for the year This is an Army record, and with a tournament still left to go, their score extends the teams lead in the point standings for Division II, as well as qualifies the team to move up to Division I next season ACADEMIC CLUBS Debate (Investment Forum) On 26 Feb., forty cadets from the USMA Investment Forum travelled to New York City, to see USMA vets at JP Morgan, hear leadership lessons from their Vet’s Network Leader (COL (Ret.) Ross Brown, ‘87), and enjoyed learning from investment professionals The UBS leadership provided a phenomenal lunch experience that included a hypothetical 2nd/3rd order impact of ride-sharing on tire markets Cadets also visited a Hedge-Fund ran by two USMA grads, as well as MSD Capital where they met several vets that invest in Michael Dell’s personal assets DIVERSITY CLUBS Vietnamese-American Forum On 27 Feb., ten cadets from the USMA VietnameseAmerican Forum travelled to Chantilly, VA, to attend the Mid-Atlantic Union of Vietnamese Students Association Conference The USMA club met with the Vietnamese Student Organization from the United States Naval Academy Cadets also met with over two dozen current or former Vietnamese and Vietnamese-American military officers, including the first Vietnamese U.S. Army Brigadier General, Viet Luong, the first Vietnamese– American Virginia National Guard Brigadier General, Lapthe Flora, and the first Vietnamese National graduate from the United States Military Academy, Mr. Tam Minh Pham (Class of ‘74) This was an extremely successful trip, and the cadets made some very important contacts, as well as legitimized the USMA club on the National level Big Brothers Big Sisters After lunch, the group went to Arvin Gym to participate in an intense afternoon of dodgeball, basketball, and other physical activities After everyone recovered from the intense competition, the Littles were given a tour of the Academy via a scavenger hunt Cadets escorted their Littles throughout the campus by following clues that lead them to key landmarks where they were educated on its significance The day wrapped up with an award ceremony where each Little was awarded a branch insignia by their Big; the cadets chose a specific branch insignia based on their Little’s personality and characteristics On 27 Feb., the USMA Big Brothers Big Sisters club welcomed 13 “Littles” from the Highland Falls community to West Point for a fun day of mentorship with their Cadets, also known as “Bigs” The group enjoyed a lunch at the Cadet Mess Hall where they shared good food, great stories, and even learned to “kill the milk” RELIGIOUS CLUBS Catholic Chapel Choir From 19-21 Feb., seventeen cadets from the USMA Catholic Chapel Choir travelled to Easton, PA The trip was an excellent developmental experience for the cadets, especially for the CIC, CDT Moffat CDT Moffat performed admirably during his first trip section in a leadership position, and by all accounts the trip was a resounding success The cadets sang the musical liturgy of one service on Saturday and two on Sunday with a total congregation of approximately 1,000 Protestant Chapel Choir On 26 Feb., the USMA Cadet Protestant Chapel Choir travelled to Carlisle, PA, to perform an evening concert of sacred and patriotic song for the congregation and community at the Carlisle United Methodist Church On 27 Feb., they toured the Gettysburg National Battlefield to gain a better understanding of tactical infantry and cavalry maneuvers That evening, the cadets performed an evening concert of sacred and patriotic songs for the congregation and community at the Messiah United Methodist Church in Shippensburg, PA The following morning, the cadets sang for the Sunday service at the Messiah United Methodist Church, where they were welcomed by the pastor and praised for their dedication to the ideal of service to country Worshipers were treated to sacred and traditional hymns including the Battle Hymn of the Republic After the service, the families who hosted the cadets in their homes joined them for a lunch at the fellowship hall of the church The congregations and community were delighted to become better acquainted with the members of the Cadet choir, and the cadets in turn appreciated having the outreach to the ministry by performing and worshipping with such an appreciative congregation Club Away Events Club Event Location Date Boxing (Men’s) Miami of Ohio NCBA Tourney Oxford, OH 5 Mar. Advanced copies of the movie will be sold at the Book Store, and those in attendance will have the opportunity to have their copy of the DVD signed by the producer and panel.
