RETHINKING COMMUNITIES BRAIN TRUST
POSITION DESCRIPTION RETHINKING COMMUNITIES BRAINTRUST The Roosevelt Institute | Campus Network seeks innovative and hard-­‐working individuals to serve as the core leaders of our Rethinking Communities Initiative. Known as the Braintrust, these students (six in total) will be joining the RICN national leadership team, and will lead our efforts to reimagine how young people unite to rethink communities. This group of visionary, ambitious students will work closely with a nationwide team of dedicated and passionate individuals committed to envisioning and acting on bold ideas and new forms of civic participation in pursuit of the common good, both as a part of a leadership board and as members of the regional structure of students already in place. In fall 2013, the Campus Network embarked on a new initiative to demonstrate the collective power and impact of our nationwide network. The Rethinking Communities project is a student-­‐led effort that seeks to create systems-­‐change by collectively leveraging the ingenuity of our generation in pursuit of more democratic, equal, and healthy communities. In 2015, it is time for the second guiding body of Rethinking Communities. Supporting Campus Network chapters as they design local policy initiatives and shaping collective action and engagement around identified challenges. Working directly with the different regional teams around the country, the position will be both one of practical organizing and thought leadership. What does it mean to join our community of policy thinkers, organizers, and leaders? We’re committed to the Rooseveltian way – progressive values, creative ideas, and bold action. We’re invested in building a community of smart, engaged individuals able to drive all three. Responsibilities: • Serve as the official guidance board for rethinking communities projects around the network;
• Work directly with your RICN regional team to imbed the project into your region and tell stories from your
region;
• Lead their own campus chapters in creating specific Rethinking Communities projects;
• Explain the scope of the Rethinking Communities initiative and connect students with policy trainings and
resources;
• Serve as an official Roosevelt representative at major events, meetings, and conferences; • Utilize Rethinking Communities projects to recruit and retain talent, foster the growth of Roosevelt on college campuses, and connect students to other Roosevelt work; • Suggest improvements and advise others on ways to strengthen their own project idea;
• Drive long-­‐term policy change, build a powerful community, and have fun doing it. Skills and Qualifications: • Understanding of the Rethinking Communities Initiative;
• Strong teamwork and team-building skills;
• Intense passion for people-driven change, new pathways for democratic engagement, public policy, community organizing and/or student advocacy;
• Strong writing, problem solving and analytical skills; • Demonstrated experience working with diverse communities and young people; • Self-­‐starter, high motivated, resourceful, flexible and creative; ROOSEVELT INSTITUTE | CAMPUS NETWORK

RETHINKING COMMUNITIES Rethinking Communities is a nationwide effort by the Roosevelt Institute | Campus Network to reimagine the economic development, civic infrastructure, and public health and environment of the communities in which we live, work, and go to school. The initiative emerged out of our commitment to collective engagement and action on what the network believes to be the key issues of our time – the rise of economic and political inequality. The Campus Network is setting out to combat this daunting trend where we have the most substantial impact: in our communities. We see community governance – ownership and participation within our cities, towns, and local communities – as the force that will drive our future economy and politics.
