Busy families are often too rushed to prepare healthy meals at home every day. Whether you are eating out or cooking at home, there are tools available to make the best choices you can for your family’s health. But first, does it really matter what we eat? Consider this: a growing number of Americans are overweight and undernourished. How can that be? Eating too many empty calories requires that the human body store excess calories as fat while not getting enough nutrients for adequate energy and growth. How can people be sure that the foods they eat provide adequate nutrition? Use the nutrition fact label to make healthy choices. Kid Connection Teach your child to read nutrition labels at the grocery store and ask for nutritional information at restaurants! Plan meals in advance and ask your child for suggestions. Take your child to the store to pick out fruit and vegetables themselves. Eat breakfast daily. Studies have shown that kids who eat breakfast are more successful in school and eat more appropriately throughout the day. Take a walk before and after Thanksgiving dinner, organize a football game or a Turkey Trot. Think about being active together as a way to connect with family and friends over the holidays.
