In our time together today, I hope to give you a very good sense of Miami University – I’ll share with you what attending Miami might be like –talk about available opportunities, review admission and financial aid information, as well as convey the incredible value that is a Miami education. Our information session is 45 minute, and our tour will last about 75-90 minutes. A word of advice for your tour, ask lots of questions of your guide (a Miami student) – currently living the Miami student experience. Great, welcome to you all – let’s get started! 8 The Big Picture Miami is a nationally recognized as one of the most outstanding undergraduate institutions, Miami University is a public university that effectively combines a wide range of strong academic programs with the personal attention ordinarily found only at much smaller institutions. mid-size – 17,472 students ** Miami attracts students from across the United States and around the world -The majority of our admitted students are from Out of State. We received applications this year from all 50 states and the District of Columbia this year. We’ve also experienced a 25% in our international student applications. 85% Undergraduate – primary focus (200 hundred years ago through today) residential campus – 98% of our students live on campus or within a mile or two of the campus. A nice acknowledgement of the work we’ve been committed to for over 200 years. 10 A hallmark of the Miami academic experience is a focus on a strong foundation in the liberal arts, and it’s one of the reasons Miami faculty love teaching here. In addition to the specialized courses in their majors, all Miami students complete the Global Miami Plan for Liberal Education. Four tenants: thinking critically; understanding contexts; engaging with other learners; reflecting and acting. Every student at Miami benefits from a university-wide emphasis on developing skills in written and verbal communication, analyzing data and thinking for yourself, solving complex problems, and coming up with new solutions – skills for success in a changing world. Your education is more than job training for a specific career. Courses in the liberal arts will help you develop skills that employers are looking for. A recent employer study tells us that one of key asset employers want college graduates to have is the ability to effectively communicate - orally and in writing. Writing is essential. We have a wonderful writing center on campus, The Howe Writing Center. And part of its mission is to ensure that our students write well. Other assets employers want to see include critical thinking and analytical reasoning skills, and the ability to innovate and be creative. Our focus on the liberal arts positions our students well for both gainful employment and also graduate school, law school, and medical school admission. 11 Our academic programs are clustered in five distinct areas or divisions. – quick overview of divisions. Family Studies & Social Work – Family studies for students interested in family life education. Both SW and FS curricula include extensive emphasis on the diversity of American families (racial, ethnic, gender, and socioeconomic composition). ENG: 12% of accepted students F12. SEAS - 21st among approximately 350 BS/MS engineering schools – USNEWS 2012. +Liberal education + engineering/computing – The liberal arts background/skills that are developed are very attractive to employers/engineering firms and differentiates MU engineering/computing students from engineering/computing students at other schools. + Interdisciplinary – Engineering Management (engineering/computing with business), Bioengineering (engineering/computing with biological sciences), Software Engineering (computing with engineering) and General Engineering (engineering/computing with medicine, law, foreign language/culture, about anything!). Lockheed Martin Leadership Institute – a visionary approach to preparing engineering leaders. It provides an intensive leadership development experience for select Miami engineering and applied science students. The interdisciplinary programming aims to produce well-rounded graduates who are especially prepared in the areas of technical/ innovative leadership, business acumen, people leadership and personal/ethical leadership. Ascertain audience interest in pre-professional programs - - Our pre-professional programs prepare you for professional school within the guidelines of a major. Preprofessional students may major in any of our 5 divisional areas. Students interested in healthcare professions, such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine or physical therapy, often major in Zoology, Chemistry, Kinesiology, Microbiology, or Psychology. Popular majors for students interested in law include English, History, Political Science and Psychology. Across our divisions, Miami gives undergraduates many opportunities to work with faculty on research projects and to participate in strong international programs, interdisciplinary collaborations and extensive experiential learning opportunities. Another hallmark of a Miami education is an active/engaging experience outside the classroom – another aspect of a well-rounded education. MU is a very active campus and our students lead very active lives. We’re preparing students to be global citizens, to understand the broader world. To do this, it’s important that you get out of the classroom, off-campus and engage in greater communities in a variety of settings. An impressive # of other opportunities to gain practical, hands-on experience: Leadership – Miami is well-known for our commitment to developing the potential and providing numerous opportunities for growth in the area of leadership development – in fact, 70% of Miami students say they participate in our leadership programs. A 20M$ endowment supports over 20 programs on campus and around the world. We’re also excited to share that the Armstrong Student Center (phase 1 completes in ‘14) will create a focus for the Miami experience, providing students with opportunities to come together to collaborate, exercise leadership, and connect globally through advanced technologies. The 203,000 square foot structure will include a 500-seat theatre, the largest formal event space on campus, and a two-story Center for Student Engagement and Leadership (SEAL). active citizens – Many of our students are involved in projects and service groups: alternative spring breaks, building libraries in Africa, a water pump in Mali, Edun Live t-shirts, and Miami University has been named one of the top producers of Peace Corps volunteers by placing seventh on the organization's Top 25 list for medium-sized schools. One final point regarding our student engagement: First-year students and seniors at universities across the country answered multiple questions on the annual NSSE survey to determine students’ college experiences in five areas: level of academic challenge, active and collaborative learning, student-faculty interaction, enriching educational experiences and supportive campus environment. Our review process is comprehensive; we look at applicants holistically, and it is individualized, as Admission staff members read and review the entire contents of every application. We consider many academic and contextual variables during the review process (including transcripts, grades, standardized test scores, essays, letters of recommendation, activities and experiences), but rather than evaluating these variables independently, we strive to see the interrelationships between them and to establish the context of a student's achievements and demonstrated potential up to this point in his or her life. *Admission to Honors will be based upon the Common App for 2013 Divisional consideration: · Business Direct admission - applications exceed spaces available. The application for admission is used to determine merit scholarship eligibility—no additional form is required. Priority consideration for the full amount in the ranges will be given to students applying for admission by December 1, 2012. No preference is given for ACT or SAT, and Miami uses the highest test scores submitted. For ACT, the best composite score is used; for SAT, the best Critical Reading and Math sub-scores are used. Miami graduation rates for all undergraduate students is 83%. If asked, clarify 6 year rate. For reference: 71% graduate within 4 years, 82% graduate within 5 years, 83% graduate within 6 years. Our median length of time to earn a degree is 3.7 years, the shortest time among Ohio public universities. Nationally, less than 55% of students at public universities graduate within 6 years. Graduating early or on time not only saves you money (in tuition) but allows you to progress more quickly towards your career or graduate school plans! Graduate Schools – some of our students come to Miami with graduate school aspirations in mind – and find that Miami provides a great experience that helps propel them into graduate programs. Professional Schools: many students come to Miami with aspirations of going on to professional schools: LAW: 97% of senior Miami applicants to law schools for the 2011-12 school year were accepted (compared to a 80% national average). In recent years, Miami students have been accepted to top law schools including those at Harvard, Columbia, New York University, University of Chicago, Pennsylvania, and California-Berkeley. Miami remains an important feeder school for top Ohio law schools. MED: The overall acceptance rate from 2008-11 is 64% (national average over that time is 46%). If a student is able to maintain a 3.4 overall GPA, 3.4 science GPA, and score no less than 8 on any section of the MCAT, the acceptance rate is 86%. HONORS Students’ rates of acceptance is 100% for both law and med. But before getting a great job, getting accepted to graduate school, law school, or med school, you need to graduate first, right? Know that our students work hard and Miami works hard at keeping students on track to graduate. Career Services - Career Services help students prepare for their careers or to further their educations. Career Services provides 10 services to assist our students in locating opportunities – included on-campus interviews, career advising, workshops, mock interviews and critiques, Over 300 employers actively recruit on our campus – one of the most actively recruited campuses in country – the most among similarly-sized schools. We also host an annual teaching career fair, attracting school districts from many out of state districts. And prior to the job search, the majority of our students have internship experiences -70%- enabling them to acquire practical, real world work experiences.
