Senior Outreach
Services helps
elders stay active
Senior Outreach Services (SOS) is located
in the Langston Hughes Center on the corner of
E. 79th and Quincy. As an anchor location for
the Fairfax neighborhood, SOS takes its role
as a central location for seniors very seriously.

reduce isolation and loneliness with fitness and
therapeutic activities five days a week. From
Tai Chi to art therapy, there is something for
everyone. This spring marked the opening
of the meditation walkway completed by the
Fairfax Renaissance Development Corporation.
This walkway provides a peaceful path for
elders to follow and has benches for resting.
The fitness and Tai Chi classes are occasionally
held outside in the meditation garden for a
refreshing outdoor experience.
SOS and the elders who
participate in on-site programs
have played host to two
intergenerational days recently.
First, with the 7th grade students
of University School who came
to the center as part of their tour
of the Fairfax neighborhood.
The students participated in
a Tai Chi class with the elders, joined them for
lunch and interviewed the seniors on their life
experiences. Second, City Year volunteers spent
a day engaged with SOS in a variety of ways
