COACH TRIP
OSMOTHERLEY
This month we visit the western edge of the North Yorks. Moors. Let’s hope the weather is glorious and the
elements do not repeat themselves, as the last time we walked in this area, albeit a little further east, the
villages of Boltby, Thirlby and Suttton-Under-Wihtestonecliffe were practically washed away!! The ‘A’ walk
starting at Swainby while the ‘B’ and ‘C’ walks from Osmotherley and all three finishing there. Usual
refreshments available. Hope you all have a lovely day, T.G.
A WALK
STRENUOUS
LINEAR
15 MILES
From the former mining village of Swainby, we make a gentle start passing the remains of Whorlton Castle
and Whorlton Church before climbing on to the moors. Once above the trees, we follow a sketchy path
through very dense bracken but, after crossing the Cleveland Way, the going improves and most of the route
is on clear paths, moorland tracks and minor roads. From Square Corner there is a descent towards
Osmotherley but no, of course, without a final ascent into the village.
Leaders David and Carola.
B WALK
MODERATE
CIRCULAR
11 MILES
We leave Osmotherley with our first visit to the valley of the Cold Beck. Then we climb gradually on the
Cleveland Way, passing the Oakdale Reservoirs to Hambleton Down. The walk follows the ridge with
(hopefully) excellent views. We descend into the Kepwick Valley and visit the villages of Nether Stilton,
Over Stilton and Thimbleby before returning across the Cold Beck, again, to our start.

C WALK
EASY
CIRCULAR
6 MILES
This is a walk wit a decidedly ecclesiastical flavour, starting in a village that has both a medieval church and
a 18th century chapel, passing a restored Tudor chapel. It is also a grand scenic walk, which proceeds along
the edge of the Cleveland escarpment, continues over Scarth Wood Moor, with fine views of the Cleveland
Hills, and returns along a section of the Hambleton Drove Road. There are several ascents but none that is
either lengthy or too strenuous.
