The individual appointed to this position will have primary responsibility for teaching
Sociology and Environmental Studies courses within the undergraduate Sociology and
Environmental Studies programs as a joint appointment. Responsibilities include
maintaining current expertise and research in the discipline, academic advising, and
participation in program development, promotion and student recruitment activities, as
well as participation in University and Departmental committees. We anticipate
substantial participation in the SOU Sustainability Center and on the SOU Sustainability
Council, and potential administrative duties that would help foster an integrated,
sustainability education program at SOU.
Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in Sociology or related field with a focus on one or more
of the areas in the desired qualifications below; one year of college-level teaching
including quantitative and qualitative research methodologies at the undergraduate
level; knowledge of SPSS and/or geospatial software.
Desired Qualifications: A background in other areas complimentary to involvement with
an integrated sustainability education program: sustainable community studies,
sustainable resource studies, food safety and security studies. Academic program
development and administrative experience; strong interpersonal and organizational
skills; ability to work collaboratively with community partners on applied research in rural
areas; experience with and ability to interact with a diverse population.
