MILITARY INSTALLATIONS
Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, Camp Lejeune Marine Base, New River
Air Station and Cherry Point USMC Air Station have a combined presence
of 68,680. The Fleet Readiness Center East at Cherry Point employs
approximately 4,000 personnel in over 130 occupational codes.
TRANSPORTATION
PRIMARY HIGHWAYS
I-40, I-95, I-795, US 70/64/264/117/17/258/301/13.
I-85 is easily accessed via I-40 and US 264/64/70/117.
MOTOR FREIGHT CARRIERS
Over 60 motor freight carriers provide service to all parts of the nation.
SMALL PACKAGE/PARCEL SERVICES
FedEx, UPS, DHL and Emery have offices in all major communities.
RAILROADS
CSX, Norfolk Southern, and the NC Railroad Company serve the region.
Amtrak passenger stations are located in Rocky Mount and Wilson.
AIR TRANSPORT
Three Regional airports: Greenville, Jacksonville and New Bern
provide commuter service to Charlotte, Atlanta, Cincinnati and
Philadelphia. Raleigh-Durham International, Wilmington International
and Fayetteville Regional are within easy driving distance of the region.

Deep-water bulk cargo and container facilities in Morehead City, NC, Wilmington,
NC and Norfolk, VA are less than two hours from any city in the region.
UTILITIES
ELECTRIC
Service is provided by Progress Energy, ElectriCities of North Carolina,
Inc., NC Power, and the North Carolina Electric Membership Corporation.
Rates are significantly lower than in many Northeastern states and competitive
with those in the Southeast.
NATURAL GAS
Piedmont Natural Gas provides service to the thirteen counties.
Three cities have their own natural gas distribution systems.
HEALTHCARE
There are 12 hospitals in 9 counties with over 3,000 beds and 1,500
physicians. University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina includes
a Level I Trauma Center and is supported by a full range of medical
specialty services. Also located in the region is the ECU Medical School.
The region’s health team includes over 300 dentists.
