f WINTER 2011 A Spirit of Giving News for Friends of Lakewood Hospital Foundation What’s Inside Profile in Giving I Charitable Bequest I Corporate Spotlight I Vision for Tomorrow 22,600,000 Steps and Counting… 2002 Celebrate 10 years of running, walking, wellness, community spirit and support of Lakewood Hospital at the Ambulance Chase on Sunday, May 1. “This is a fabulous event, not to be missed,” notes event co-chair Joe Gibbons. “The Ambulance Chase is for all, from the youngest among us in the Children’s Chase to participants well into their eighties. And the bonus is the difference that has been made in patient care at Lakewood Hospital due to the funds raised from the event over the years.” 2003 2004 Since its inception in 2002, the Ambulance Chase has generated nearly $300,000 for a myriad of programs and services at Lakewood Hospital, ranging from SeniorCare Services to Teen Health Center to the emergency department. In keeping with Lakewood Hospital’s Vision for Tomorrow, this year’s event will benefit patients in need of post-acute rehabilitation and outpatient physical, occupational, and speech therapy services, as well as several other initiatives. “Walk or run, 5K or 1.5 miles, volunteer or participant… it doesn’t matter what you do, just come join us on May 1!” exclaims Chas Geiger, event co-chair. “And help to support patient care at our community hospital- Lakewood Hospital.” 2005 2006 2009 2010 Presented by Donald Martens & Sons Ambulance Services, event festivities are at Lakewood Park and registration begins at 7:30 AM. For more information, call 216.529.7009 or visit lakewoodhospital.org/foundation To register online visit hermescleveland.com 2007 2008 Contributions at Work: Helping Newborns and Moms in Distress A portion of the funds raised through last year’s Ambulance Chase was used to purchase a maternal and newborn simulator to be used collaboratively by Lakewood Hospital’s Birthing Center and Respiratory Therapy Department. This lifelike device is used to practice emergency situations that may occur during and after childbirth. Such situations are less frequent at Lakewood Hospital; however, it is vital that staff have the skills necessary in the event a life-threatening situation occurs for a mother and/or infant. The addition of the maternal and newborn simulator will raise staff educational opportunities to a new level. Trainers will have the ability to program certain scenarios to teach staff how to handle a variety of situations. Because an actual delivery can be simulated, staff members become well prepared with the proper knowledge to assess and respond to unanticipated issues that may occur throughout the entire childbirth process. “Members of the response team will have practice drills and learn from one another,” notes Lynn Barabach, nurse manager of the Birthing Center. “We will specifically be conducting drills for emergency situations that infrequently occur during childbirth such as neonatal and maternal resuscitation, thus enhancing skills not used very often. Ultimately, these drills will lead to improved patient care.” This represents just one way in which Lakewood Hospital Foundation works with the hospital in using donor contributions to put patients first. Stringer, Development Assistant, stringp@ccf.org 1 Profile in Giving: Walter and Mary Jean Hagen After more than 60 years of marriage, Walter and Mary Jean (MJ) Hagen of Westlake admit they have their differences. He’s a golfer, she’s given it up. She’s a Blossom Shop volunteer at Lakewood Hospital, he’s not. But when it comes to their dedication to Lakewood Hospital, they agree 100 percent. “We just feel it’s a worthy cause,” MJ explains. Besides her service in the Blossom Shop, she is proud to have been a member of the hospital’s Children’s Board since 1971, making her one of the board’s longestserving members. She still fondly recalls the friend from their Rocky River neighborhood who invited her to join the Children’s Board, an invitation that has brought her 40 years of friendships and personal satisfaction. Wally, who retired from Glidden Corp. in 1985 and from a second career as president of a mobile CT and MRI scanner business in 1997, was a long-time member of the Fairview Hospital Board and he currently is an honorary member of the Community West Foundation Board. He gives all the credit for serious involvement in Lakewood Hospital projects to his wife. “She is the one who has been involved all these years.” Together, they enjoy attending many of Lakewood Hospital Foundation’s events. With MJ’s activities at Lakewood Hospital and Wally’s involvement with Fairview Hospital and the Community West Foundation, they count supporters of the hospital and many members of the medical and administrative staffs among their friends, and the foundation’s special events give them a welcome opportunity to catch up. Beyond the special events, the Hagens also agree on the importance of regularly supporting the hospital. They are fortunate to not have required very many of the hospital’s medical services themselves, but believe passionately in its mission. They have given generously to the hospital every year for more than 20 years, supporting the annual campaign, special projects and capital campaigns, along with the events. They recently established an endowment fund and have included Lakewood Hospital in their estate plan, making them members of Lakewood Hospital Foundation’s Graber Society as well as the Founder’s Council, which recognizes cumulative giving. “We make the decisions together on what organizations to support,” says Wally. In addition to Lakewood Hospital, they also are donors to the Community West Foundation where they are members of the Legacy Society and their church, Rocky River United Methodist. As for Lakewood Hospital’s future, that’s something else the Hagens agree on. “The hospital is here to stay,” Hagens say. “We like the direction Lakewood Hospital is moving; to control healthcare costs while providing high quality and compassionate care in this day and age, hospitals have to be more strategic. Lakewood seems to be doing things right, and we continue to endorse their efforts.” Charitable Bequest What if you could make a gift that would grow into a legacy...to help today, tomorrow and beyond? Think of the impact your generous gesture could make on the health and well-being of the community. It’s entirely possible, and there are dozens of ways to make it happen. Your legacy gift can be a modest donation or a substantial transfer of assets. More than 70 percent of Americans contribute to nonprofit groups of their choice during their lifetimes. Yet fewer than 9 percent of these generous people remember to continue this support through a charitable bequest. What is a Charitable Bequest? A bequest or gift by Will is the simplest way of making a gift to Lakewood Hospital Foundation. It is a convenient and effective way for you to leave a lasting legacy. A bequest also ensures that patients served by Lakewood Hospital are able to continue to receive the best care possible for generations to come. What are the Benefits? Convenient – A charitable bequest can be made no matter how old you are and in any amount that you wish. Simple – A charitable bequest is easy to arrange. Simply instruct your attorney to include a bequest to Lakewood Hospital Foundation in your Will. Cost-Effective – Your gift is given from your assets, and hence, your present income will not decrease. Tax Advantages – A charitable bequest is a highly effective way to reduce estate taxes. Flexible – Your bequest can be for a specific amount, a percentage of your estate, or the residue of your estate (a gift after your debts, taxes and specific legacies have been paid). Control – You retain use of all of your assets for the duration of your lifetime. Peace of Mind – You can make changes to your Will at any time. How Do I Make a Bequest? Making a bequest is simple. If you have already prepared your Will, your attorney can update it by adding a supplementary paragraph, describing your gift intentions. If you have not yet prepared a Will, we recommend that you do so. This is an important first step to ensure that your intentions for your estate are documented and that your family and loved ones will be properly cared for. You may make a specific bequest, which means that you designate a specified amount to the foundation; or you may make a residual bequest, which means that you designate all or a percentage of the remaining portion of the estate to the foundation after specific legacies, debts, taxes, and administrative expenses have been paid. Let Us Know We hope you will tell us when you have named Lakewood Hospital Foundation in your Will. We would very much like the opportunity to thank and recognize you for your generosity. For more information on charitable bequests or other gift planning options, please contact Kristin Broadbent at 216.529.7107 or kbroadbent@ccf.org. Lakewood Gratefully Receives Large Bequest Lakewood Hospital Foundation recently received an initial distribution of $1.1 million from the estate of Colonel Thomas C. McNeal. The bequest is the second-largest gift to the hospital in its 104-year history and is a partial distribution with an additional contribution expected upon final settlement of the estate. “Philanthropy is critical to the future of Lakewood Hospital,” said Kristin Broadbent, executive director, Lakewood Hospital Foundation. “We are grateful to Colonel McNeal for his forward-thinking and the legacy he has left, which will help Lakewood Hospital continue to meet the community’s evolving healthcare needs.” A career military man, Colonel McNeal was a Cleveland native and spent his final years back in the area. His estate included residual bequests to 15 local and national charitable organizations. The story of McNeal is one of very modest background, hard work, frugal living, and a strong desire to give back to the institutions that cared for him and that still served his local communities and interests well. Not forgetting the excellent healthcare he received throughout his life, McNeal’s generosity benefited four area hospitals. 2 John Kedzior, executor of the estate, noted “Colonel McNeal included these hospitals because he so valued the healthcare resources here in northeast Ohio and appreciated the care he received at each of the facilities throughout his lifetime.” “We are humbled by the magnitude and far-reaching benefits of the McNeal bequest, which represents one of the largest gifts the foundation has ever received,” says Ken Haber, president, Lakewood Hospital Foundation. Lakewood Hospital was founded in 1907 as a gift from Dr. and Mrs. C. Lee Graber. With this single gift, motivated by deep compassion and a desire to care for the sick, the Graber’s began a tradition of giving that perseveres more than a century later– a tradition that supports the provision of local healthcare. “The generosity of Dr. and Mrs. Graber, along with that of many others, was the foundation on which Lakewood Hospital was built. And today, that tradition continues– allowing us to keep in stride with the needs of a changing population and ever-evolving technology,” notes Haber. “We hope Colonel McNeal’s philanthropic spirit will continue to inspire others to support our efforts.” Thank you Lakewood Hospital Foundation is immensely blessed by the generosity of individuals, corporations and foundations. In turn, we steward these gifts received, passing your support on to Lakewood Hospital to serve the needs of its patients and the community. For over 100 years Lakewood Hospital has benefited from the financial support of its friends and neighbors. This tradition of caring has created a unique institution in the true spirit of partnership with the community. Donor generosity helped build this hospital and continues to keep it growing today and into the future. The following list highlights philanthropic support received October 1 – December 31, 2010. The company owns and operates four continuum-of-care facilities in the area: Bradley Bay Health Center, Center Ridge Health Campus, Wellington Place and Lakewood Senior Health Campus, which it purchased in 2006. “After extensive renovations, the five-building Lakewood campus is thriving in its location on Detroit Avenue,” said John T. O’Neill, president of O’Neill Management, and the second-generation to lead the company which now employs 150 people in Lakewood and 800 people in northeast Ohio. “The facility needed a little tender loving care,” said O’Neill. Now Lakewood Senior Health Campus is an award-winning campus with 150 beds in its skilled nursing home, 64 assisted living suites, and 60 independent living rooms. “Lakewood Senior Health Campus is a reflection of Lakewood. It is a place where Lakewoodites come for short-term or long-term care. It’s a part of the community, and it serves the community by providing excellent care when the residents need it – whether it is skilled care, assisted living or independent living.” Having that connection to the surrounding community is important to O’Neill, whose father John started the company in 1962 when he built Bradley Bay in Bay Village. Originally a single-family home builder, John Sr. and his wife Alva worked together to foster a great philosophy of caring and giving back. “We have always been a part of our communities and being a part of the hospital is just something important that we feel we need to do by providing healthcare within Lakewood,” said O’Neill, who is a trustee of Lakewood Hospital. “Supporting the hospital just comes naturally to us. There is a great staff and group of doctors that work at Lakewood Hospital and so when we sponsor events, we make sure to attend or volunteer, and it’s a fun way to support the hospital. It also provides an opportunity for our staff members to feel a part of the Lakewood community.” In addition to ongoing support of the hospital’s various events, O’Neill and the company have made a gift commitment to its Vision for Tomorrow: Shaping the Future campaign. Lakewood Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees As the new president of the Lakewood Hospital Medical Staff, James R. Bekeny, MD, will serve on the Lakewood Hospital Foundation Board during his three-year tenure in that role. He is a member of the Cleveland Clinic Vascular Surgery Department and director of the Cleveland Clinic Vein & Vascular Surgery Center located in Westlake, which offers a wide range of cosmetic services and cardiac and vascular diagnostic testing services as well as state-of-the-art treatment for varicose and spider veins. This marks a total of more than $1.4 million that has been raised through this initiative over the past seven years to support cardiac services at Fairview, Lakewood, Lutheran and Medina hospitals. These regional Heart Centers provide the most comprehensive resources available for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. In partnership with each other and with the Cleveland Clinic, the hospitals continue to share best practices and resources to ensure excellence in programs and cardiac outcomes. Terry Kilbourne, of TEC Inc. Engineering & Design, and his wife Pam, were the lucky winners of the $100,000 grand prize. While many others walked away winners, the real winners are the hospitals’ cardiac patients whose care has been enhanced due to the acquisition of new techniques, technologies and services, and the expansion of community outreach programs designed to promote heart-healthy living made possible through funding from Straight from the Heart.
