Restaurant Management Curriculum
Understanding the RDM Curriculum
Philosophy of the New Curriculum
RDM represents a major change in restaurant structure and offers exciting new management opportunities. To help
managers understand RDM concepts and master new roles, an innovative new curriculum was developed. The RDM
curriculum is designed to enhance learning while reducing the amount of time spent in off-the-floor training. This is
achieved in four ways:
The new curriculum is more focused.
Managers concentrate on only the concepts and skills that help them perform their new roles
effectively. They are also given credit for what they already know. In the Department Manager
Curricula, managers have the opportunity to test out of functional training.
The new curriculum offers blended learning experiences.
Virtual collaboration, e-Learning, coaching, and classroom training are practical, proven learning
methods that each have their own strengths. Blending these methods of instruction enhances the
learning experience and achieves faster results. All learning is centralized in one source, the Learning
Management System (LMS). And, because it is online, learning resources are always accessible.
The new curriculum is delivered more efficiently.
Streamlined content reduces the overall time managers spend in training. This reduction is achieved
by integrating coaching and training into each manager’s weekly routine. On-the- job coaching
enables managers to learn while they get work done. Many courses are available online through the
LMS, allowing managers the flexibility to pursue training when it best fits their schedules. The
classroom experience is also condensed and focuses on practicing skills, collaborating with other
trainees, and receiving feedback.
The new curriculum increases accountability.
Coaching sessions are built into the curriculum and are initiated by managers, creating an ongoing
dialog between learners and their coaches. Coaches and approval managers can also view managers’
learning plans, completion rates, and assessments within the LMS to track progress.

Restaurant Management Curriculum
Features of the RDM Curriculum
Innovative New Tools and Learning Methods
The RDM Curriculum includes six new features that enhance and diversify the ways that managers engage with their
learning plans.
The Learning Management System (LMS) is
a web-based tool that houses registration
for instructor-led courses and virtual
collaborations, assessments, coaching
materials, and e-learnings in one
convenient location. e-Learning and
coaching reduce travel expenses and
condense training time, allowing managers
to spend more time on their restaurant
responsibilities and routines.
The Test-out feature allows experienced
managers to receive credit for what they
already know in the Department Manager
curriculum. By proving mastery of concepts
and skills, a manager can skip select
courses and move on to new material more
quickly.
A Virtual Collaboration is a web-based
experience, led by a facilitator, which enables
managers to connect with each other, share
insights, and work together to solve problems.
These scheduled sessions are repeated
periodically to ensure that students have
opportunities to raise questions, verify their
understanding, and share best practices with
their peers.
e-Learning Modules make it easier for
learners at any level to master the
responsibilities of their role. These web-based
courses, delivered through the LMS, expose
students to new concepts and skills and use
knowledge checks to reinforce understanding.
Coaching Sessions are used to provide inrestaurant learning experiences. Coaches talk
through problems and help learners practice
what they have studied by following scripts
and checklists provided in the LMS. These
sessions happen as managers complete
restaurant tasks, so work is actually getting
done while they are learning.
Capstone Courses offer the learner an
opportunity to train in a live group setting
with other managers. These courses offer
simulation-based experiences that combine
concepts and skills they have already
mastered in their learning path with the
leadership skills necessary to effectively
manage their teams.
Important Terms
Learning Plan is the path of learning components that must be
followed to become a Shift Manager, Department Manager, or
General Manager.
Prerequisite is a course that must be completed before moving
to a more advanced part of a learning plan.
Equivalency is credit given for certain classes previously
completed. (BSM, ASM, ROLP, or BLP)
McDonald’s | May 2012 | 9862
Shared Courses are courses that are common to two or more
learning plans. If a manager has completed a shared course as
part of one learning plan, that course will not have to be taken
during future learning plans. For example, all managers must
complete the LMS Basics course once.
Compliance Courses are shared courses that managers must
complete each year.

RDM Curriculum Roadmap
Learning plan timing is based on completion of two hours of development and one hour of walk-thru time per week. If you spend more time on training per week,
you can accelerate Learning Plan completion. To see the details of each Learning Plan, refer to Training at a Glance (TAAG) available on the LMS and AccessMcD: US

Managers take part in Virtual Collaboration Sessions to share experiences and best practices with
their peers. They can also receive credit for what they already know with the test-out feature, which
includes passing an assessment and verification. They also participate in a Department Manager
Capstone, which is a simulation designed to teach them the leadership skills they will need to be
successful in this role.
