The get-together of Club members with the entire top management
of Märklin was very popular with both sides – the current issue summarizes the most important impressions of this successful top event
within the Märklin Days program in Göppingen.
To add some more spice to the turn of the year, we stir up eager anticipation for the new Club models for 2012. Exclusively for our Club members we are producing an unusual electric rail car in H0: the class 403
is regarded as a prestige object in the German railroad’s inter-city traffic.
The model the Club members wanted is to be produced as a four-car
unit in the original 1974 color scheme and will guarantee authentic
running enjoyment. In this issue you can find out all about the prototype and the model – and product management will exclusively be
giving you some inside details about the rail car’s design. Naturally,
N-gauge enthusiasts are not forgotten: Trix is producing the successful
class 218 diesel locomotive in exclusive TEE color scheme as a model.
We are delighted to be able to introduce N-gauge enthusiast Hartmut
Lennert – the passionate model collector runs the Miniatur Erlebniswelt
in Dietenhofen. In the Service section, we give updated contact data for
Trix round tables and the second part of the unusual models of the
Group Administration Bavaria. Finally, we put two more cooperation

Suisse Toy
The best-loved classic toys by the leading manufacturers,
many new products and premieres: the biggest toy event
in Switzerland, the Suisse Toy, drew some 50,000 visitors
to Bern at the beginning of October 2011, when the megaevent opened its doors for the twelfth time. The range of
toys extended from parlor games and model construction,
from dolls and cuddly toys through to electronic games.
The Swiss exhibition was truly a rendezvous for games
players from all over the world. Visitors were able to try
out new games on the spot and follow the trends in the
children’s room – these also included the innovative
and new product line Märklin my world. The absolute
hit at the Märklin stand for both children and grown-ups
was the battery-powered ICE in the Märklin my world
range for children from three years of age. This was immediately added to many a Christmas shopping list.

Club model 2012 in H0: the DB class 403 rail car
Prestigious thoroughbred
Club members gave the avant-garde and technically unique express
electric rail car of class 403 top marks in the Club survey, and in accordance with their wishes, Trix will be producing the four-car train as
Club model for 2012 – the very train which from 1974 modernized the
IC traffic of the German Federal Railroad.

“Traveling in the 403/404 rail
cars was something quite different. The federal railroad
intended above all to attract
the business passenger with
this Intercity – with comfort
and fast journey times”, relates Thomas
Landwehr, member of Märklin’s Documentation
department staff. With one eye on the new
lines to be constructed in the future, an electric rail car was being planned as an alternative to the loco-hauled express train at the end
of the 1960s. With its clear-cut front and its
striking color scheme, the class 403 was able
to demonstrate its competitive ability to an
impressive extent. “We will be concentrating
on our strengths in the interpretation of the
rail car in its model form, promises Karl-Heinz
Grässle, H0 Product Manager for Märklin.
“This includes a high-quality production primarily in metal as an important unique feature,
as well as the lavish and authentic detailing”.
So that the four-car unit can also negotiate
older sets of turnouts and smaller layouts, the
2012 Club model will be produced in a scale
of approximately 1:93.5. “Getting it all together

will be a real challenge for our design department and toolmakers, but we aim to show
with this model just what we can do”, promises Grässle. The expenditure for the new
tooling alone will make the class 403 worthy
of its place as Club model 2012.
For the newly-conceived IC rail car, which was
intended to replace the diesel-powered Trans
Europ Express class 601, the railroad spared
no expense in fitting out the class 403 units,
to combine top technology with comfort. The
three streamlined units, which entered regular
service from 1974, were ordered in 1970. TEE
comfort standard was naturally obligatory: in
the 403 there was exclusively first class seating in compartments and saloons; air-conditioning was part of the equipment as were
sliding plug doors, a dining car and a kitchen.
The absolute highlight was an on-train secretariat with a telephone kiosk. “The offer was
indeed aimed at the business traveler who
could have letters and notices typed up by
the assistant during the journey”, reports
Landwehr of a premium service which was
extremely popular with the passengers.
Lightweight construction for top speed
The train was intended not only to score with
its fittings, but to be faster and quieter than the
class 601. “To save traction power, the trend
was towards lighter and lighter construction”,
says Landwehr. The designers faced the challenge of designing the cars in an extremely
lightweight form, and in contrast to the traditional coach construction with steel, the chassis, body framework, roofing, side- and end
panels were for the most part of aluminum
alloy. That had the desired result: with an
axle loading of only 16 tonnes, and thanks to
all axles being driven, the express unit could
accelerate from 0 to 200 km/h (124 mph) in
100 seconds – speed thrill included. According
to rail historian Landwehr, the train mostly
ran at 160 km/h (99 mph) and consisted of two
cab cars (class 403) and two intermediate
cars, one a saloon car (class 404.0), and one
with dining section and kitchen (class 404.1).
“It was certainly designed for the high speed,
although there were very few sections at
that time upgraded for 200 km/h running”.
Nickname “Donald Duck”: the rail car was in service on
IC line 4 between Munich and Bremen.

Pioneering: the modern
Intercity was conceived
to replace the Trans
Europ Express.
Also unusual was the curve-dependent car
guidance system. Thanks to this tilt-technology,
the car bodies could incline to either side by
up to four degrees from the vertical and thus
negotiate curves without any sacrifice in comfort. Admittedly this tilt technology failed to
justify itself and was removed. The side-walls
of the cars, inclined two degrees inwards towards the roof, were left as they were. The
class 403 was also designed as an all-rounder
suitable for running in Austria and in Switzerland. On the roof of the cab cars a pantograph

The trucks were constructed by the Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg”, quotes documentarist Landwehr from Siemens’ original
specification sheet which he has. Electrical
equipment was supplied by AEG Berlin,
Siemens-Schukert Munich and Brown, Boveri
& Cie of Mannheim.
The trains were in service in regular traffic
for three years, and also DB special traffic.
The main route on which they ran was IC line
4 Munich-Nuremberg-Bremen.
Prestigious objects that they were, the DB
was very fond of displaying these multiple
units as demonstration models at trade fairs
and other special exhibitions. Then, as the
“Lufthansa Airport Express”, the rail cars
gained a new lease of life between 1982 and
1993 in a special color scheme in regular
traffic. The cunning combination of the latest
technology and futuristic exterior helped
boost the Intercity to its image. Furthermore,
the 403 left its pioneering mark on the third
generation of today’s Intercity rail car trains.

“The ET 403/404s with their innovative technology, equipment and shape, were real eyecatchers”, confirms H0 Product Manager
Karl-Heinz Grässle. The streamlined appearance of the snout also earned the train its
unusual nicknames “Donald Duck”, “White
shark” or “Dolphin”. “The class 403 as a four
car train as a representative of the 1970s is an
inspiration with its magnificent appearance –
and that’s exactly what makes it so popular
with our Club members”, says Grässle, turning attention to the latest Club survey. The
403/404 rail car was nominated as dream model
by a large majority. “The class 403 fits in
perfectly into the Märklin concept in which
we have already realized some legendary rail
cars as Club models, including the 2006 Club

The equipment will leave no wishes unfulfilled: the train will be driven by two motors,

train will be a wonderful adornment for any
layout and together with our models of the
class 601 “Mediolanum” and the class 210,
authentic operations will be possible in the
grand style”.

Long-distance traffic, freight traffic, regional traffic: the range of services handled by
the diesel loco 218 217-8 is extensive. Trix is now producing this all-round railroad
talent as Club model 2012 in N-gauge, in its very own unique TEE red and beige.
The 218 class is a member of the V 160 family
of the German Federal Railroad’s most successful diesel locomotives. Found all over the DB
network, it is one of the most important repre-

yet reached. More than 400 examples of this
subdivision were built up to 1979, with continuous ratings between 1,839 and 2,060 kW, weighing 79 tonnes and capable of 140 km/h (87 mph)
top speed. The 218 class underwent numerous
changes of color scheme. The first locos of
class 218 were turned out in the purple-red color
scheme usual at the time for diesel locomotives.
In 1974, the first federal railroad loco was painted in the new color scheme, ocean blue and
beige, and a solitary locomotive – 218 217-8 –
was treated to a similar design, but in the TEE
color scheme of red and beige. This unusuallyliveried loco serves as prototype for the 2012
N-gauge Club model. The model, with four
axles driven, is a completely new tooling and
is being delivered with many extra functions
in the condition corresponding with era IV.

Club members put ideas forward
Get the customers more closely involved – this maxim was followed by the entire
Märklin management team at the IMA and Märklin Days. A successful top event, as
described by many who took part in the summit meeting: we would like to see it again.
Well attended: the names
of a hundred Club members
were drawn who had the
opportunity for exclusive
discussions with the MärklinManagement – a large
family discusses the future.
“Thank you very much for such open discussions with the Club members”. Both members
and Märklin management expressed a resounding and unanimous approval of the gettogether. Märklin Managing Director Stefan
Löbich stressed that how Märklin communi-
cated with their end-users was a fundamental
question for him, speaking to the 100 Club
members who had been drawn by lot. “You
buy our products and can offer criticism of
our portfolio based on your own skills. That
helps us improve and to get to know the needs

of the market even better”. And that’s why
the management team, gathered her in its
entirety along with the Club members, were
busy taking notes (“I’m glad you mentioned
that – I’ll put that right”) – and was pleased
to receive praise and was delighted over
the shop-talk. Thus both sides called for the
meeting with Märklin management, which took
place in a respectful and open-minded atmosphere, to be repeated. “We want to involve
our customers more closely, listen to them
and take this feedback to heart”, says Lars
Schilling, Märklin’s Marketing Manager. “If we
implement suggestion received directly from
our premium customers, that gives us an
essential competitive advantage”.
Exchange comes over “superbly well”
The Club members are delighted with the
discussion offensive with the board members,
product management and other section
supervisors taking part. “All of them give
straight answers – this exchange comes over
brilliantly”, opines Frank Ronneburg from
Berlin. “This is the way for the company to
strengthen communications and contact with
the Club members”. Holger Späing from
Dortmund goes as far as talking of a family:
“The expression includes the staff – after all,
they have often known each other for years
and it really has developed into a community”.
That’s why the Club members Heinz Schreiber
and Thorsten Hackmann from Hamburg are
so pleased with the prospects: “After the phase
the company has been through, it’s nice to
know what lies ahead”.
The “family feeling” manifested itself in several localities at the mega-event IMA / Märklin
Days: in the VIP lounge, MIST72 demonstrated the subtleties of Central Station and DC
car decoders; from Märklin, CAD project leader

the Catia design solution; MIST1 entertained
with presentations about a 1939 Märklin layout, metal building kits and press models as
well as Märklin marketing films of the 1950s
and 1960s – and the Ruhrmodule shone
with their H0 layout and the impressive Ruhr
district scenarios.
One subject discussed at the get-together was
strategies by which young people could
be gained for the model railroad hobby. The
Märklin company is represented in the children’s museums in Munich and Graz and is
involved in the primary school project “Playing teaches” of the Ministries of Education.

N gauge as far as the eye can see
From collecting to construction: Hartmut Lennert’s
trains stretch their legs on
the giant layout he created.
Hartmut Lennert is an N-gauge enthusiast: “Here you can have a superb landscape
on as little as two square meters (21-1/2 sq.ft.)”. And because the passionate collector
wanted to see his many treasures running too, he’s created an absolutely fantastic
world for them. In Dietenhofen in Franconia, his lovingly-designed model railroad
world takes up 150 square meters of space – over 1,600 square feet – to make an
N-gauge wonderland.
Germany’s biggest N-gauge layout came about as the
result of a miscalculation and determination. “I planned
a layout for my garage roof, but I got my sums wrong”,
grins Hartmut Lennert. “I drew out a plan for every square
centimeter, and I’d have had to make the legs of the layout far too short because of the roof slope”. So an empty
industrial building was rented. It is in fact far too big, but
Lennert reacts like a typical model railroader: “I just redesigned the layout to suit the dimensions”. And having
Thomas Friedel from Lokschuppen Fürth at his side, who
had learned from that great layout constructor Bernhard
Stein, the layout is conceptually and in its building well
worth seeing. Lennert, as an enthusiastic collector, has
everything in the way of locomotives and rolling stock
which the N-gauge fan could desire. It all fits together: at
the end of 2008, Lennert moves into the rooms which are
today his Miniatur Erlebniswelt.

The first impression is breathtaking. At the horizon on this
66 square meters (710 sq.ft.) of U-shaped exhibition layout
there are extensive wooded uplands with castle, a magnificent spa hotel briefly catches the eye – then the glance
passes over rural landscapes to a large town with industrial
area, a large terminal station with adjoining loco depot
and further to the dominant airport, until it is finally caught
by a village idyll. The second impression is no less exciting: 500 meters (1,640 feet) of track laid with magnificent
station throats, serpentine local railroads and long main
lines, tunnels and galleries all over the place and a colorful
succession of girder bridges, arched and lattice-girder
bridges. Little notices everywhere draw attention to exciting and amusingly presented everyday scenes – this
N-gauge layout is certainly not short of detail: you can
even see waiting passengers through the windows of the
airport terminal.

For takeoff: the fully- detailed airport with itsterminals
and takeoff and landing runways is part of the stage one
extension to Erlebniswelt. Side rooms in which dioramas
are standing today will provide space for expansion plans.
At present, 82 trains are digitally controlled – including
Trix classics like the VT98 rail bus, and “Ludmilla” doubleheading with sound. “We don’t run in strict conformity
with eras, and train consists are not crucial either”, says
Hartmut Lennert. “We have lots of families visit, and all
they want is to see trains running, and they are thrilled
when we turn day into night”. The average stay for visitors
from all over Europe is 45 minutes, and many stop for
three hours. Many repeat visitors like to top up their viewing every month.
The Miniatur Erlebniswelt team also passes on their expertise in digitalization and layout construction in two-day
seminars. “Lots of model railroaders get stuck at the bare
layout stage”, as Hartmut Lennert says. “We know how
to design depth into water or what materials will give
you a perfect rock formation”. Tips for wiring layouts are
also very much appreciated: under the layout there are
1,700 meters of cable (almost 2,000 yards) – not counting
the 830 meters (over 900 yards) of glass-fiber cable for
lighting the airfield.
Magic mountain: the spa hotel promises relaxation in the clouds. In the
overall picture, the building serves as a reference point on the large layout.

The layout
Running operations on seven main lines and countless branch lines are
controlled using 200 turnouts. The N-gauge layout has five showpieces
on three levels: the railroad depot including loco-shed with 21 stands, the
airport, the refinery with regional station, the town station with industrial
private sidings and the branch line station with gravel plant.
The seminars
The visitors’ highlight: every 20 minutes the Miniatur
Erlebniswelt turns day into night.
The model construction experts at the Miniatur Erlebniswelt regularly
run model building seminars. The themes range from the weathering of
houses and digitalization through parent-and-child diorama building and
landscape design through the four seasons to water and rock construction.

Trix models: Group Administration Bavaria part 2
Originals out on their own
Unusual and attractive: the models of the Bavarian State Railway are popular with
model railroaders – partly because of the eventful history of their prototypes.
On the transfer of the German provincial railroads to the German state in 1920, the free
state of Bavaria was conceded – following
appropriate negotiations – a special status for
the railroads in its region: the independent
“Group Administration Bavaria”. However,
this special status came to an end with the
coming of the Third Reich. All privileges asso-
ciated with the Group Administration Bavaria
were successively withdrawn.
From 1937, the overlord was no longer the
Director General but the State Minister of
Transport – in this case, Julius Dorpmüller, who
was responsible for both positions. From 1938,
the ownership lettering on motive power
units and passenger cars changed. An eagle

with wings outspread, standing on a laurel
wreath with the then ubiquitous symbol of the
National Socialists. To left and right of the
laurel wreath could be seen the initials “DR”,
for Deutsche Reichsbahn – German State
Railroad. Until the early 1940s, the freight
cars bore the wording “Deutsche Reichsbahn”
in two lines, thereafter, they too had to make
do with the letters “DR”. Thereafter, the different regional directorate names of the freight
cars were also only given in the form of abbre­
viations.
As compensation for losing its special status,
Bavaria was awarded the “State Railroad
Central Office Munich”, which among other
tasks was made responsible for the procurement of electric traction units for the entire
country.
After 1984, Trix introduced two H0 locomotive
models for electric train haulage. The first
was a model of a 1’ BB 1’ electric loco with rod
drive using a jackshaft – a locomotive class
which was taken into service in 1927 by the
DRG as class E 75. Since in era IV some of the
prototypes were still in service with the DB,
it was initially introduced in 1984 as a class
175 of era IV. A year later, a gray-painted version appeared as the E 75 of the DRG as it
was running in 1925.
The somewhat older version of this breed,
with a 4-6-2 wheel arrangement, which naturally also had rod drive, was as a model the
EP 3/6 in the brown color scheme of the Royal
Bavarian State Railways, or in era I. Two years
later, collectors were delighted to welcome an
era II version as a class E 36 in the gray color
scheme of the Group Administration around
1925. Later, the EP 3/6 model was produced
in a different color scheme (green / beige) for
era I. In 1914, the EP 3/6 was purchased in
four examples with road numbers 101 to 104
for the line Freilassing-Berchtesgarden. The
locos were still in service there in Reichsbahn
days as E 36 01 to 04.
Models
A real Trix gem was produced in 1995. As prototype for the model, the Bavarian EG 2 x 2/2,
procured in 1920, served – another machine
with rod drive via jackshafts. The prototypes
were ordered from the manufacturers in 1913,
but their completion was held up by the First
World War. Their original road numbers were
20/221 and 20/222, and their home depot was
Freilassing. After this, they were numbered in
DRG style E 70 21 and E 70 22. Both machines
were withdrawn from service by the Deutsche
Bundesbahn in 1950/51. Over the last 15 years,
Trix and Märklin have released virtually all
variations and color schemes of the two locomotives in DRG and DB model form. Last year,
the locomotive was reintroduced into the
catalog as a gray-green version as E 70 22 of
the DB for both model railroad brands.

Models
All G 3/4 H locomotives were put into service by the Group Administration Bavaria still wearing their old Bavarian numbers. Later, they ran as class 54 15–17.
ministration Bavaria. The first two individual
models were produced by Trix in 1995. There
was also a less-well-known freight train set with
the 2-6-0 tender locomotive and four differ­ent
freight cars complete with loads, representing
the time of the Group Administration. The outfit, packed in a wooden presentation box,
had the order number 31349 and bore the lettering “Zug-Set Bay. EP II” (Train set Bavaria
EP II). However, there was no entry for it in the
catalogs.
In the 1997/98 Trix catalog, the articulated tank
engine Gt 2x4/4 of the DRG (Group Administration Bavaria), a new model development,
wasn’t included either.
In the year 2000, the famous German Museum
in Munich, also responsible for historic railroad
vehicles, celebrated its 75th anniversary. To
mark the occasion, Märklin produced an H0
special edition of a freight train consisting of
the Mallet locomotive already mentioned and
ten freight cars based on Group Administration
Bavaria prototypes dating from around 1925.

Railroad exhibition
In 1924, a great railroad exhibition was presented on the premises of the Seddin freight
depot, south-east of Berlin. A total of 462 railroad vehicles from various German manufacturers were there to be admired. Representing the production of the Locomotive Factory
Joseph Anton Maffei of Munich, apart from
the mighty Gt 2x4/4 Mallet steam locomotive
later renumbered 96 023, was the electric
locomotive with the 2’ BB 2’ wheel arrangement – the EP 5 21 501, later in the DRG stock
to be known as E 52 20. For this locomotive,
Maffei constructed the mechanical parts,
while the Siemens-Schuckert factory in Berlin
supplied the electrical equipment. The absolute favorite at the exhibition however was
the S 3/6 express passenger steam locomotive
by Maffei. The loco was still numbered as
3709 for the Group Administration Bavaria
and was painted a brilliant blue. The S 3/6

repainted in blue for a short time for a major
event staged by Märklin in Göppingen in
2001. She was numbered 3673 of the “Royal
Bavarian State Railway”. There was a historic
Märklin logo in gold painted on both side of
the engineer’s cab. The model was produced
for Minitrix, as well as in H0 and Z as a one-off
series. The S 3/6 was this year once again
a guest in Göppingen station, at the Märklin
Days, but this time she was in her original
green color-scheme.
Era divisions
In the course of what is now well over 150 years of railroad history,
the designation of railroad vehicles and railroad technology to specific
eras has become more and more complicated.
In the “MOROP” (European Union of
Model Railroad and Railroad Friends)
technical committee, since 1954 responsible for determining and laying
down uniform and compulsory model
railroad standards, the idea evolved
for a corresponding standard for allocation to eras to be created. Thus the
NEM standard 800 was developed.
Now railroad matters are divided into
six eras, starting in 1835, through to
the present day, and the eras can be
subdivided as necessary. At some time
in the past it was recognized that different dates applied for these periodic
divisions in different countries, and that these had to be allowed for.
For this reason, country-specific standard sheets were drafted under
an additional standard designation – NEM 806. For Germany, the
standard number is 800 D. The division of the six eras is well known to
those familiar with the annual Trix and Märklin catalogs. The deviations for Germany in standard 800 D are as follows: era I ends with
the dissolution of the provincial railroads and their absorption into
the state railroad in 1920, at which point era II begins.
This in turn ends in 1949 with the establishment of the German Federal Railroad in the German Federal Republic. Era III is dated between
1949 and 1970. Era IV already starts a little earlier, in 1965, with the introduction of a computer-based numbering system for traction units
and rolling stock. In the case of introduction of the Group Administration Bavaria in 1920 and the transitional period between 1945 and
1949 as well as the period when vehicles were being relettered from
the mid-1960s, era maintenance is most important and should be
allowed for.

Trix modelers devote their leisure time to the
best hobby: the model railroad. above all in the
group, it is enormous fun to chat about layouts
and models.
Many hobby railroaders like to join forces in constructing layouts, discussing the latest news from the world of
Trix or testing out the latest products to come onto the
market. On this page we provide a platform for all those
who want to share the Trix world with like-minded people.
We publish here addresses of “Trix Club round tables”,
but we can only publish details for private meetings of
members of the Trix Club. We do not publish commercial
announcements or those emanating from model railroad

Historic steam, diesel and electric locomotives: the Bahnpark
Augsburg offers impressive insights into the wonderful world of the
railroad. In the glazed steam locomotive workshops, visitors can see
how historic steam locos are repaired and serviced. The new special
exhibition “Railway dreams and dream railways” is dedicated to
the great railway journeys of the world. The exhibitions is sponsored
by IGE-Bahntouristik and tells the story of railroad adventures in
impressive photographs, from the “Glacier Express” to the IGE steam
train to Istanbul. The exhibition will be open from May to December
2012 in the steam locomotive hall, a preserved building. Historic and
special trains run from the Bahnpark through fascinating railroad
landscapes all over Europe. On the depot premises there is plenty
to be seen and discovered such as the permanent exhibition on the
legendary Trans Europ Express (TEE). Photos, models, a model
railroad and films and exhibits document the glory era of this diesel
powered rail car.
His passions were trains and drawing: the impressionist Hermann
Pleuer (1863-1911) captured the world of the railroad in many or his
works in a unique manner. To commemorate the centenary of his
death, the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart presents a selection of his railroad
drawings in display cabinets. Apart from impressions of locomotive
repair shops, trains running through the landscape and trains
arriving at and departing from Stuttgart main station, there are
many detailed studies and precise design drawings of locomotives
by the artist to be seen. Hermann Pleuer is regarded as one of
the main exponents of Swabian impressionism and as a “railroad
painter”. He documented the railroad as a modern innovation with
all its consequences for town and landscape. The exhibition “Soot,
coal and pencil”; Hermann Pleuer’s railroad drawings” is still open
until 12 February 2012 in the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. Club members
receive a reduction on the admission fee.
