Stay Close, Go Far at New College Institute Saving money, staying close to home, and being able to work while taking classes – that’s what many local students are looking for when making a choice for higher education. And that’s exactly what New College Institute offers. What is NCI? In eight short years, New College Institute (NCI) has established itself as a premier educational provider serving the Southside region of Virginia. NCI strives to meet the needs of the community through flexible learning opportunities and improved access to education. A perfect complement to the local community colleges, NCI offers bachelor’s degree completion programs for students who have already completed their associate’s degree. After achieving a bachelor’s, students can choose from several master’s degree programs through NCI. NCI offers academic courses, certifications, and degrees from partner universities throughout the state. Partners include Longwood University, Virginia Commonwealth University, the University of Virginia, James Madison University, Radford University, Virginia State University, and Averett University. 8 Local faculty members oversee courses in the evenings to accommodate the busy lifestyles and responsibilities that students often have outside of their academic goals. Students take all courses in Martinsville, but in the end, their degree comes from the partner university that hosts their specific program. Other innovative programs include the Academy for Engineering & Technology (AET) and the Southside Discover MHC live in Martinsville-Henry County Students gather for the Educational Leadership program offered through James Madison University at NCI. Students in the Longwood University Elementary Education program connect with students from Clarksville and South Boston during a math class at NCI. A Regional Facility for Learning Telehealth Training Academy and Resource Center (STAR Telehealth). AET, a partnership with Virginia State University, allows high school juniors and seniors to earn college credits in engineering and technology so that they can kick start their careers and gain exposure to these high-demand fields with industry tours and internship opportunities. STAR Telehealth is a joint program sponsored by the University of Virginia Center for Telehealth and NCI. The purpose of STAR Telehealth is to equip health care providers with the tools and knowledge needed to provide efficient, remote care using video conferencing and at-home patient monitoring systems. This model allows rural and remote areas to gain access to specialty doctors and services without travel. In September 2014, NCI recognized a major milestone with the opening of a new facility located on the historic Baldwin Block in uptown Martinsville. Throughout the grand opening weekend, approximately 1,000 people walked through the doors of NCI’s new building located on the historic Baldwin Block in uptown Martinsville. The 52,000 square foot building is packed with technology to meet all training and academic needs for students, faculty, and local industry. Twelve state-of-the-art classrooms include multiple screen sharing devices, document cameras for instructors, Polycom teleconferencing capabilities, dry erase walls around the room, and an overall design stimulating increased collaboration. The Advanced Manufacturing High Bay is the pinnacle of advanced equipment within New College Institute. This space provides hands-on, innovative training and technology to students and local industry partners through programs such as the Center for Advanced Film Manufacturing (CAFM). This is just one way that NCI is providing solutions to the needs of businesses so that the community’s economy can thrive. The primary event space for large gatherings, lectures, and conferences, NCI’s Grand Lecture Hall is adaptable to the needs of our community. When used in full, the space can accommodate up to 400 people. The Grand Lecture Hall features advanced technology along with room dividers that temporarily descend from the ceiling so that the room can be divided into three spaces. NCI provides access to bachelor’s degree completion programs, master’s degrees, teacher endorsement programs, and teacher recertification courses through partnerships with institutions such as University of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, Longwood University, and more. New College Institute is dedicated to serving and benefitting local businesses and the community. A member of the Virginia Community College System, PHCC is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the associate degree. He started in the maintenance department and worked his way up to become Vice President and Assistant General Manager before earning the position of President in 1988. Campbell is quoted as saying, “the Martinsville Speedway has been a work in progress for over 65 years,” and he wants to make sure that this work is never finished. Campbell’s grandfather, H. Clay Earles, founded this historic Virginia racetrack; and when the International Speedway Corporation purchased the Martinsville Speedway from the family in 2004, Campbell said he never thought about leaving. Staying relevant in any business is essential; and in the fast-paced, competitive world of NASCAR, staying relevant is a must. Q A Over the years, what has been the biggest change in racing and how did the Martinsville Speedway respond to this change? Martinsville Speedway has always been a leader in fan amenities and the experience the fan has while at our events. As NASCAR moved into mainstream America, finally sharing the spotlight with other major league sports, the expectations of our fan has increased dramatically. Fortunately, we have been able to maintain pace with that expectation. Q A Gut instinct versus expertise: Which is more important to you and why? Guts vs. expertise? I think it takes a mix of both, but I rely quite a bit on gut instinct. Probably all my years in the business give me a feel others may not have. Of course, the same could be said for expertise. That goes back to my original answer of both. www.martinsville.com Q A What is the toughest part of being in charge? The toughest part of being in charge for me is when we don’t achieve a goal. I take it personal. I feel more of a responsibility to a failed effort than I do to a successful effort, knowing all along we do things as a team. Q What is the biggest myth in your industry? A The biggest myth in our industry is “racing is a bunch of cars going in circles with a bunch of rednecks watching them.” Nothing could be further from the truth. Our sport is so technical now when a team is looking for an employee, more than likely, they are looking for someone with an engineering degree. The days of building these cars in a backyard garage are long gone. The fans of today come from all walks of life. Almost half are female. We have more families attending our events than ever before. No longer is this a southern sport. Most of our drivers are now coming from the Midwest…not North Carolina as it used to be. Q A What have you learned about yourself since becoming President of the Martinsville Speedway? In all my years at the helm of Martinsville Speedway, I’ve learned how to deal with people, earn their respect and treat people the way I’d like to be treated. 19 Q A Throughout history, whom do you admire most as a business leader? Throughout history there have been numerous business leaders that I have admired; but I’d be remiss if I didn’t recognize the one that is responsible for me doing what I’m doing now and that’s my grandfather, the late H. Clay Earles. He had a vision for what a motorsports facility could be here when he carved it out of a field back in 1947. He was steadfast in his dream and took this place from its infancy to what at the time of his passing was a multimillion dollar showplace for NASCAR. That took guts and brains and he certainly had them both. Q If you were to give advice to someone who wants to follow his or her dreams as you and your grandfather have done, what would this be? A To someone today with a dream, I would give him or her just one piece of advice: Give it all you have and go for it. If you have the drive and passion, you’ve already surpassed most of the competition. Desire will get you a long way; you then can figure out the rest. After years of hard work to help grow the business, Nelson’s passion in life is to create opportunities for youth to succeed and the community to prosper; and he does this by way of education. 22 Discover MHC Nelson is in his 15th year of coaching baseball in Martinsville-Henry County, starting with the American Legion, Patrick Henry Community College and Piedmont All Stars. He brought to the area the Fellowship of Christian Athletes two years ago with the intent to “open the minds of our youth to make proper choices in life,” he said. Nelson also supports many school system programs in Martinsville and the counties of Henry and Patrick and is a contributor to the New College Institute and many other community and faith-based programs. He sponsors Henry County’s Teacher of the Year Award and provides transportation to students who need rides to GED classes. Nelson recently shared five things about himself. 1 . He did not play baseball in high school, instead he played basketball and football. “I was asked to play baseball, but I could not hit a curveball. Sitting on the bench would have been tough for me.” 2. He traveled to South Korea for a KIA corporate meeting and ended up talking to the President of KIA about baseball half of the night. The second largest automobile manufacturer, KIA sponsors one of the eight professional baseball teams in South Korea. “I felt bad that others in the dinner meeting weren’t part of the conversation, but baseball is really important in Korea. A former player of mine, Chris Ayers, who now works for the Atlanta Braves, went to Korea to help fix its fields.” 3. He loves his job and wants others to love their jobs as well. “I try to create a work atmosphere that is positive and a place of pride. If our employees are happy and like what they are doing, customers see this.” 4. He donated a van to the City of Hope in Tanzania, a country in East Africa. 5. Nelson was approached by Dr. John and Regina Chacha of Teamwork Ministries International, Inc., based in Martinsville, to help with their signature project, called Team City of Hope. The City of Hope has created a mission center, children’s home, school and farmland for 90 orphaned children who live on the City of Hope campus and another 150 children from surrounding villages attend its school, bringing hope to these children for a brighter future. “This van became a town’s ambulance.” One of his most admired persons is Jack Dalton, the late Chairman of Henry County’s Board of Supervisors so receiving the 2013 Jack Dalton Award was extremely special to him. “Jack Dalton was a special guy. He helped me get started in baseball and to launch the area’s Colt League at Drewry Mason High School. The baseball field was overgrown and not in use. He got the county to help me fix this field so we could play ball. Fab Lab Make your wildest dreams come true If you dream it, you can probably create it at the Fab Lab. It’s a place where members of the community are welcome to come and take courses on how to use the software and equipment. Area businesses and industry can utilize the specialized machinery to develop prototypes or perfect existing products. Also, the Fab Lab provides STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programming, and advanced and digital fabrication learning to primary, secondary and higher education. The Fabrication Laboratory, better known as the Fab Lab, is the first of its kind in Virginia. It houses a variety of equipment including 3D printers, vinyl cutters, plastic injection molding machine, vacuum forming machine, laser cutters, and a CNC (computer-controlled cutting) router to name a few. “Here at the Fab Lab, we create a positive place to foster an entrepreneurial way of thinking,” said Matthew Wade, coordinator of the Fab Lab. “We’re here not only to educate, but to encourage people to examine 26 themselves and find that big idea so we can help them foster it here.” Wade has worked on a number of special projects with area partners like 3D printing prototype parts for engines used by Arrington Performance and printing prototype parts for Basset Furniture to use in manufacturing furniture. The “How to Make Almost Anything” class is open to the community and designed for participants to learn free and open-source software to design at home or in the classroom, and then use Discover MHC Iris Gillespie watching the laser cut out her design. Maker Monday sessions were offered weekly and featured activities, like “Food for Geeks,” designed to attract visitors to the Fab Lab. PHCC engineering faculty member David Dillard demonstrates circuits by creating “Maker Bots” which were handed out to visitors. the digital file with Fab Lab machines to make the product. “After successfully completing the class, the maker can become a member of the Fab Lab and utilize the machinery for more iterations of products,” Wade said. “Class members have started their own businesses from what they’ve created and learned.” “Bloomin Purses,” a pocketbook business by Iris Gillispie, started from her taking a course in the Fab Lab. Another student, Christopher Wagoner, has started a small 3D print business. Wagoner said he first heard of the Fab Lab while enrolled in an introduction to engineering course. After taking a few Fab Lab courses and buying two 3D printers of his own, he started CW3 Printing. “The Fab Lab is pretty much my home away from home, or more literally, my shop away from my shop,” he said. “The Fab Lab has helped me in so many ways personally and as a small business owner. …When you walk into the Fab Lab, you walk into a community.” Gillispie said she appreciated Wade’s ability to get her to think outside the box when it came to her purse designs. “He commented on the design on my purses and really helped me to create a functional logo to attach to my purses,” she said. “He encouraged me along the way to think of how I could make the designs unique and make them my own. We went back and forth and ended up with a great logo designed www.martinsville.com on acrylic plates that can also double as a business card.” Most recently, Wade began the program “Maker Mondays” at the Fab Lab, which brings the maker movement, a global culture of technology-based DIY (do-it-yourself) projects, to the community. The first session was a Halloween Edition that taught participants how to laser cut their own wooden pumpkins or make a scary Halloween mask. Other sessions have included making your own t-shirt jersey, making your own laser cut holiday ornaments, making your own tacky Christmas sweatshirt and an evening with Chocolatier Jason Worley where participants learned how to make homemade cocoa and sampled different kinds of chocolate. “Holding Maker Mondays is a great way for the Fab Lab to be accessible to everyone,” Wade said. “We do not want people to think they have to be an artisan or have a wealth of experience in digital fabrication. We’ll teach them how the machines and software work together, and most importantly, they’ll have a great time learning how to use them.” The Fab Lab is located in the Artisan Center at 54 E. Church St. It’s part of the United States Fab Lab Network and the global Fab Lab Network. The lab was developed in 2012 in partnership between Patrick Henry Community College, New College Institute and the Martinsville-Henry County Economic Development Corporation. 27 work in Martinsville-Henry County 3D printer Regional Incubator Growing Our Own A need for Martinsville-Henry County’s infrastructure for small business and entrepreneurship development continues to grow. Martinsville Speedway A Corporate Leader in Giving Back to the Community W hen people think of Martinsville Speedway, the thunder of race cars, the roar of huge crowds, no-vacancy signs and packed restaurants come to mind. But that is just part of a much bigger picture. When the race teams have moved on to the next race and the thousands of fans are back at home and work, Martinsville Speedway remains a vibrant part of the Martinsville and Henry County community serving as a civic and charitable resource. In 2014, Martinsville Speedway gave more than three-quarters of a million dollars to the Martinsville and Henry County area, either in cash and ticket contributions, in-kind donations, free use of the facility, fundraising activities or staff hours worked at different community events at the track. “It has always been a big part of our philosophy here to give back to the community in every way we can,” said Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell. “Every member of our staff lives in this community; they are vested in what happens here and want to do everything we can to make it better.” The largest and most visible is the annual Fourth of July Celebration event the speedway has hosted for 16 years. It is a free-to-the-public community party with nationally-known musical acts, carnival rides and fireworks. The Piedmont Criminal Justice Academy held two four-day training 33 sessions at the track in 2014, utilizing the facility’s many roads for traffic stop instruction. The kick-off for the Martinsville-Henry County Chamber of Commerce Leadership Development Program was held at the track along with a Chamber After Hours function. As has been the tradition for the past decade, the Martinsville High School After-Prom Party was held in the track’s infield. The speedway opened its grandstands to fans at no charge for about a dozen days of NASCAR Sprint Cup and Camping World Truck Series testing, which is always popular with local race fans. Also in 2014 there were numerous tours from both local and out-of-town groups, visits by schools and civic groups. Martinsville Speedway’s 2015 calendar already has three solid weekends of racing booked. The campground features a 37 play in Martinsville-Henry County I n April 2014, the Philpott Marina and Group Campground in Bassett, Virginia, opened at Henry County’s signature designation, Philpott Lake. The marina features 42 rentable boat slips. Amenities include a fueling station with non-ethanol fuel, a marina store with fishing supplies, food, ice cream, bagged ice, drinks and snacks and public restrooms. “In our opening season, the marina exceeded our expectations due to ongoing fishing traffic and recreational boaters,” said Roger Adams, Director of Henry County’s Parks & Recreation. picnic shelter, tables, fire rings and a bathhouse facility with restrooms and showers. “This is the only group campground located on Philpott Lake and can be rented on a nightly bases,” said Adams, adding, “During this opening season, the campground was booked every weekend and many weekdays.” Henry County Parks & Recreation provides a variety of recreation services with its 26 park facilities and many different recreation programs for children, adults, families and seniors.
