A Christmas Story
The Gold Wrapping
Paper
Once upon a time, there was a man who worked
very hard just to keep food on the table for his
family. This particular year a few days before
Christmas, he punished his little five-year-old
daughter after learning that she had used up the
family’s only roll of expensive gold wrapping
paper.
As money was tight, he
became even more upset
when on Christmas
Eve he saw that the
child had used all of
the expensive gold
paper to decorate one
shoebox she had put
under the Christmas
tree. He also was
concerned about where
she had gotten money to
buy what was in the shoebox.
Nevertheless, the next morning the
little girl, filled with excitement, brought the
gift box to her father and said, “This
is for you, Daddy!”
As he opened the box, the father was
embarrassed by his earlier overreaction, now
regretting how he had punished her.
But when he opened the shoebox, he found it
was empty and again his anger flared. “Don’t
you know, young lady,” he said harshly, “when
you give someone a present, there’s supposed
to be something inside the package!”
The little girl looked up at him with sad tears
rolling from her eyes and whispered: “Daddy,
it’s not empty. I blew kisses into it until it
was all full.”
The father was crushed. He
fell on his knees and put his
arms around his precious
little girl. He begged her
to forgive him for his
unnecessary anger.
An accident took the
life of the child only a
short time later. It is told
that the father kept this
little gold box by his bed
for all the years of his life.
Whenever he was discouraged
or faced difficult problems, he would
open the box, take out an imaginary kiss, and
remember the love of this beautiful child who
had put it there.
In a very real sense, each of us has been given
an invisible golden box filled with unconditional
love and kisses from our children, family, friends
and God. There is no more precious possession
anyone could hold.

Premier Redford spoke eloquently
about children and families and their important
place in our communities. Premier Redford
acknowledged Kids Kottage’s good work in
the areas of Early Intervention and FASD.
A generous audience made the Premier’s
Breakfast in 2013 the best one ever, raising
over $50,000! This money will provide care
and refuge for infants and children during
times when their home life is chaotic and
upside down. It will provide the voice of
reason and calm to help children’s parents
return their homes to the safe, nurturing
places they want and need them to be for
their children. With this money Kids Kottage
will continue to help provide the tools and
strategies that families need to gain and keep
food security for their children. Parenting
programs will provide parents education about
their child’s early development and help them
increase their skills so they can guide their
children toward competency and success.
Many thanks to all who attended
and participated!

“The Great Gatsby” Gala
It all happened June 14th. Guests of the Kids
Kottage “Great Gatsby” Gala, sponsored by
WAM DEVELOPMENT GROUP, stepped back
to 1922 in the fictitious town of West Egg, Long
Island.
Two hundred guests sat down to a fabulous
meal at tables covered with glittering gold
rosette-covered tablecloths, with centerpieces of
spectacular fresh flowers, and chairs bedecked
with faux feathers.
And when the time was right, Danny Hooper
called generous hearts together to bid on auction
items donated by Arpi’s North, Spruceland
Millworks, and Anna Loparco and Gary Smith.
And when “all was done and all were in”, the
Gatsby Gala raised an impressive amount
of money to keep children safe and families
together.
Never can an evening like the “Gatsby”
Gala come together without many big hearts
and working hands. Thank you to all of the
supporting sponsors. Together we are making a
positive difference!

All who enjoyed the tasty banquet were treated
to the fireside chat of Craig MacTavish and

entertaining and, along with an excellent silent
auction, rounded out a great day of golf and

For the Love of Wine
Kids Kottage’s, ‘Love of Wine’ event was a
romantic evening at Delta Edmonton South
Hotel. Guests, along with their ‘Valentines’ and
friends, sampled wines from all over the world
and ordered their favourites. Tasty food pairings
including a chocolate buffet and the exceptional
jazz music by the one and only Juno nominated,
Sandro Dominelli, and other local artists
completed the ambiance of a beautiful evening.
Opportunities abounded to purchase from silent
auction spa packages, travel vouchers, wine
dinners and other items of leisure.
We extend heart felt thanks to those generous
guests that purchased our auction items. Thanks
also to our many sponsors. Your generosity
helped make our 2013 Love of Wine Event a
truly successful one enjoyed by all.

working in an attractive
room like this one has
become with its new
paint and lino, cabinets,
sink and beautiful
window covering?
The children are definitely the
winners in our brand new playroom!
It boasts new cabinetry, new lino, beautiful
bright paint and pretty window coverings.
Everyone will feel like winners next
summer because 945 Developments have
installed air conditioning!
A plaque was presented to 945
Developments at the Kottage. The plaque
has a place of honour in the playroom.
During the time we spent together
at the Kottage celebrating the
wonderful work that has
been completed we talked
about the successes and
the needs of the Kottage.
We all agreed that having a
crisis nursery in Edmonton
to ensure help is available to
families 24 hours per day is of
paramount importance.
Thanks so much to Cameron and Sue
Quilliam, Bob Cramers and Pam Proud,
Carol Quilliam, Tony Zicarelli, Dino
Vlahadamis, and Sergio Felix for joining us
to celebrate this project.
