Sigma-Aldrich Solvents
Sigma-Aldrich’s ACS solvents meet or exceed the specifications set by the
American Chemical Society. They can be used for ACS applications or for general
procedures that require stringent quality specifications. ACS solvents are available in
a wide variety of container options.
ReagentPlus solvents have a guaranteed purity of ≥98.5% for applications that
require higher purities, such as specialty organic synthesis, preparative scale liquid
chromatography or glass washing. ReagentPlus solvents are also available in a wide
variety of containers.
Anhydrous solvent water content ranges from typically 10 to 30 ppm and do not
require additional drying in your lab due to our low residue levels. Ideal use in
applications requiring extremely low levels of water such as chemical synthesis,
high throughput screening, oligonucleotide synthesis, and organic synthesis.
Sigma-Aldrich Anhydrous solvents are available in Sure/Seal Bottles and
Pure-Pac containers.
Sigma-Aldrich’s high-purity CHROMASOLV® Solvent family delivers superior purity,
stability and lot-to-lot consistency making them ideal for a variety of analytical and
preparative separations utilizing LC-MS, HPLC, GPC and spectrophometric analysis.
Designed for use with HPLC instrumentation and organic synthesis applications,
CHROMASOLV HPLC solvents are glass distilled, submicron filtered, and undergo
rigorous specification testing. CHROMASOLV® Plus solvents go beyond our
CHROMASOLV for HPLC to be your high-purity, multipurpose solvent. Tested for
suitability in HPLC with gradient analysis, spectrophotometry, environmental testing
and some LC-MS applications.

Sigma-Aldrich Containers
Sure/Seal™ Bottles
The Sure/Seal bottle incorporates the inert composition of our amber glass bottles
with a time-tested crimp-top system. This design ensures the exceptional state of
dryness achieved at time of purification is maintained throughout long-term storage
and use. Before filling, low levels traces of moisture are removed from the bottle
through oven drying. The bottles are then filled under an inert atmosphere of dry
nitrogen to prevent moisture build-up and sealed with our unique Sure/Seal liner and
crown cap. Anhydrous and Biotech grades are available in 100mL, 1L and 2L
Sure/Seal bottles.
NOWPak® Containers
Both the 10L and 20L sizes incorporate a pre-cleaned, inert PFA liner, which is
virtually compatible with all high-purity solvents and are completely recyclable. The
NOWPak containers feature sturdy High-Density Polyethylene over packs providing
secondary solvent containment during shipping, storage and handling. They are
ideal for our CHROMASOLV® Solvent line including the Mobile Phase Solvent Blends
used in HPLC analysis.
Pure-Pac® and Pure-Pac® II Returnable Containers®
The Aldrich Pure-Pac® and Pure-Pac® II packaging/dispensing system provides a
convenient method for storing and dispensing laboratory and development scale
quantities of high purity solvents, fine organics, and other high hazard liquids. The
properties of these products require the prevention of external contamination and/or
personal exposure be kept to a minimum. Many of the liquids must be handled and
stored without exposure to atmospheric moisture or oxygen. Fortunately, the design
of the Aldrich Pure-Pac® system allows ready and convenient transfer of these liquids.
Both the Pure-Pac® and Pure-Pac® II are constructed of 304 stainless steel. Since
this is a highly specialized, pressure rated container, a deposit is required upon
purchase. Each container is stamped with a unique serial Number, and a detailed
individual history is maintained. If the container is returned empty and in good
condition within six months by the purchaser, credit will then be issued for the
deposit amount.
VerSA-Flow™ Container
This 18L HDPE liner with metal overpack can is used for many of our ACS,
CHROMASOLV® for HPLC, Reagent grade and Mobile Phase Solvent Blends. Easily
configured to be used with HPLC analysis.

Acetone is a commonly used material in the manufacture of various chemicals.
These chemicals include methyl isobutyl ketone, mesityl oxide, diacetone alcohol,
acetic acid (via the ketene process), iodoform, and bromoform. Other products
where acetone is utilized in manufacture include rayon, photographic films, and
paint and varnish removers.

In chemical synthesis, acetone has been utilized in the synthesis and isolation
of both organic and inorganic compounds and complexes. These include
t-butanesulfinamide, terpenes, thiol-stabilized gold colloids, calixphyrin
macrocycles, and trispyrazolylborate platinum compounds. Acetone is also used in
HPLC analysis of organic and inorganic species, including gold nanoparticle clusters
and plant oils. Acetone has been utilized in protein crystallization.

Acetonitrile is a widely used, polar aprotic organic solvent. Acetonitrile is utilized
as a starting material for the production of such compounds as acetophenone,
α-naphthaleneacetic acid, thiamine, and acetamidine. It can be used in the
recrystallization of steroids and as a solvent for non-aqueous titrations, as well
as a non-aqueous solvent for inorganic salts. In analytical chemistry, acetonitrile
is utilized in such areas as biopartitioning studies, in the HPLC analysis of small
organic compounds, and enantiomer resolution by LC on polysaccharide type chiral
stationary phases.

Chloroform is a widely used organic solvent in biochemistry and molecular
biology. Procedures have been described for the use of chloroform in λ plaques
storage, for λ cDNA storage, the removal of mineral oil from PCR reaction
samples, oligonucleotide purification, a hydroxyl radical footprinting protocol, a
transcriptional run-on assay protocol, and an overlay assay for β-galactosidase
activity. Chloroform has been used with phenol in such procedures as DNA recovery
from polyacrylamide gels, ethidium bromide removal from DNA preparations, lysis
protocols for plasmid DNA isolation, RNase removal, and purification of yeast
DNA. A protocol describes the use of chloroform in a high-performance thin-layer
chromatography protocol for sphingomyelin analysis.
