Pew Research Center’s Internet and American Life Project, with the University of Michigan’s
Department of Communication Studies, study on teen cell phone use, Spring of 2010, indicating
that the mobile phone has become the communication hub for the majority of American teens:
o 75% of 12-17 year-olds own cell phones.
o 72% of ALL TEENS and 88% of teen cell phone owners are text-messagers.
o The frequency of teen texting has overtaken the frequency of every other
preferred communications avenue among teens.
o One in three teens sends over 100 text messages per day; 3,000 per month.
o Half of all teens send over 50 texts per day; 1,500 per month.
o For parents, teens’ attachment to their phone is a source of conflict and
regulation.
o For schools, teen cell phone use is seen as a disruptive force
o 64% of teens with cell phones have texted during class; 25% have made or
received a call during class

Nielson reported on mobile phone use among teenagers in late January, 2009. According to
Nielson, which analyses more than 40,000 mobile phone bills every month:

o American teenagers are using 3,146 messages per month, which amounts to
10 messages every waking hour that they are not in school or sleeping.
o Kids under 12 sent 1,146 per month, or 4 every waking hour.
