– Andy P., Jersey City, N.J.
Tennis great Andy Murray is
de facto royalty across the
pond, after becoming the first
British man in 77 years to win
Wimbledon in 2013. So it’s understandable that the nuptials
between the 28-year-old former world No. 1 and the lovely
Kim Sears, 27, was treated
like a royal Scottish wedding.
And yes, rumor has it that
Murray was offered more than one million pounds (roughly $1.5 million) from OK!
and Hello! magazines for photos of the April 11 ceremony. Murray turned down the
offers, but pics still surfaced of the young couple
— with the groom sporting
a blue and green kilt and
the bride wearing a wedding dress that has since
become as controversial
as it was conservative. To
cap it off, the normally reserved Murray tweeted a
hilarious, emoji-filled rundown of the big day. So even though he turned down highpriced paparazzi, he still shared the moment with his fans.
How many MLB players served in World War II?
– Megan F., Boston, Mass.
It’s estimated that more than 500 MLB players
served in World War II. Bob Feller was the first
player to volunteer for active duty. Ted Williams
was the most notable, missing three seasons
(1943-45) of his prime from ages 24-to-26 to serve
in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps; Williams also
was a combat aviator in the Korean War. Two
MLB players died in WWII — Elmer Gedeon and
Harry O’Neill. Jackie Robinson and boxing legend Joe Louis were unit mates during the war,
although Robinson did
not make his historic MLB debut
until after WWII.
Other big-name
big leaguers to
serve include Joe
DiMaggio, Stan
Musial, Yogi Berra
and Warren Spahn.

Tattoos are pricey and most tattoo artists want
cash; so who is paying for the ink adorning our
NCAA athletes?
– Rebecca M., Socorro, N.M.
Are you implying that there may be shady dealings going on between tattoo parlors and NCAA
athletes all across the country? If so, it wouldn’t
be the first time. The most infamous case came in
2010, when Ohio State’s “Tattooed
Five” — Terrelle Pryor, Boom
Herron, DeVier Posey, Mike
Adams and Solomon Thomas
— were suspended five
games and forced to repay a
combined $7,405 after selling
memorabilia and autographs
in exchange for cash and tattoos.
“As a student-athlete, you’re not allowed to use
your persona to get discounted services,” said
OSU athletic director Gene Smith. Not every tat is
acquired by ill-gotten means. Athletes aren’t the
only inked-up college students; they’re just the
highest profile.

world of comedy — or sports. Here’s a set list, so to speak, of Ferrell’s funniest roles in

to go toe-to-toe with these three teams.

MISS AMERICA
ALEX MORGAN IS THE STRIKING FACE AND SCORING FORCE OF TEAM USA
F
our years ago, Alex Morgan was the youngest member of a USWNT
that lost to Japan in the FIFA Women’s World Cup Final in Germany. The then-22-year-old scored the first goal of the final match
— one of her two goals in the tournament, both of which came in
the Knockout Stage. But she was not called upon to shoot penalties, as the
USA lost the shootout to Japan, 3–1, following a 2–2 draw in regulation
and extra time.
Since then, her life has done a bicycle kick. She has gone from phenom forward to established star striker, as arguably the face of U.S. Soccer. She has been named U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year, been a
finalist for FIFA World Player of the Year, posed in body paint for the
Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, married fellow Californian soccer star
Servando Carrasco and appeared on FOX’s American Idol — where she
and Abby Wambach gave host Ryan Seacrest a USWNT jersey, as the
“official waterboy.”
Comfortable in her skin and firmly in her prime, Morgan is poised to
take over the world — or at least the World Cup. If Team USA hopes to
bring the golden World Cup trophy south of the border back from Canada,
the USWNT will rely heavily on Morgan’s fleet feet to make it happen.

FLYING LEAP
The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series is coming to Hell’s Gate
in Possum Kingdom Lake, Texas, on May 30. It’s just like normal diving
— except these daredevils are jumping from an average of 90 feet up,
or roughly the height of an eight-story building.
One of the series’ best is American David Colturi, 26,
who admits that cliff divers “definitely have a couple of screws loose.”
BY MATT MCCUE
Talkin’ About
Practice “Since
we don’t have
diving facilities
with platforms
that are 90 feet,
we practice at
normal pools
that have the
30-feet high
Olympic-height
platforms. We
break up our
dives into different parts,
so one time we
practice our
takeoff, then our
mid-air rotation,
and then our
foot-first entry.”
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Make a Splash
“We not only
use the two
safety divers in
the water below
for medical expertise, but also
to have them
splash the water
right before you
dive because it’s
hard to determine your entry
point.”
Need for Speed
“When we jump
from 90 feet, we
go from zero to
60 mph in about
three seconds.
Then our deceleration from
60 mph to zero
mph takes about
one second in
13 to 14 feet of
water. We don’t
really go that
deep underwater.”
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Stick the Landing “If you land
the slightest bit
off of the vertical
position, you can
take a nasty shot
on your chin. It’s
like someone
punched you.
… For anything
above 40 or
50 feet you’re
risking injury
to your upper
body if you dive
head first into
the water; so we
have to land with
our feet.”
