pending lots of time
hunched over a computer
keyboard at work causes
tight, sore muscles that lead
to tension headaches and
neck pain. Here are a few
stretches, based on yoga
poses, recommended by the
Cleveland Clinic; they can all be
done at work so you don’t miss an
e-mail or phone call.
All begin with a basic seated pos-
ture. Sit at the front edge of your
chair with spine lengthened, chest
lifted, shoulders relaxed down and
away from your ears, feet flat on the
floor and knees directly over ankles.
Neck rolls: Gently drop your
head forward and roll from side to
side. Let the weight of your head
gently stretch your neck. Small
popping noises are OK but there
should be no pain. (Avoid letting your head drop back,
to protect your cervical
spine.)
Shoulder rolls: Gently
lift your shoulders and rotate them backwards in slow circular motions. Repeat a few times
then reverse the motion. This loosens and lubricates joints and helps

the NPD Group, a market research firm.
The most popular types in order:
bananas, apples, oranges and
grapes.
“We’re eating more fruit
because it’s easy to consume,”
says Harry Balzer, NPD’s chief
industry analyst. “It generally
requires very little preparation.”

Dawn Jackson Blatner, a registered dietitian in Chicago.
Her suggestion: Since sandwiches are so popular, add
shredded carrots, cucumber,
spinach, red onion and
tomatoes. “It is an easy
way to give us an extra
dose of veggies,” she
says.

Tapenades, olive spreads,
cheeses — anything that
goes well with crackers —
will go over well at a party. “I grew up
going to my grandmother’s house in
Mississippi for Christmas,” Besh says.
“She’d have little cheese spreads in jars,
which really are heaven.” Besh likes to
take it a step further by gifting jars of his
delightfully simple goat cheese mousse
(recipe at right).

I’m not asked to,” says North
Carolina native James Villas,
whose latest cookbook, Southern Fried, features some great
just-show-up-with-’em dishes.
“In the South, we simply don’t
go anywhere without bringing
something.”
Not everyone is so bold. But
plying your hosts with great
food certainly can’t be held
against you. A homemade dish
is a wonderful gesture, with the
bonus of pleasing palates. We
consulted with foodies to find
out their strategies for Christmas partygoing.
“Giving my friends food
means that when they’re entertaining, they have one less thing
to worry about,” says celebrity
chef John Besh, whose new book,
Cooking From the Heart, has a
whole section on the kinds of
pâtés he likes to dazzle his friends
with (lucky friends!). The goal? To
give something the hosts can use
in subsequent days to feed drop-in
guests or family staying over.
“I always have puff pastry,”
says Irish author, restaurateur, chef and TV personality
Clodagh McKenna, author
of Clodagh’s Kitchen Diaries,
who likes to turn the easy-towork-with, premade dough
into little quick treats, such
as Parmesan cheese straws
(recipe at right).
SPREAD THE CHEER.
PRESERVES. “You
can’t beat jellies,”
says Villas. “People
just beg me to give
them my peachplum jelly, but I’m
very picky about
who gets one.”
1 teaspoon dried oregano
leaves (optional)
1 cup (about 8 ounces) fresh
goat cheese
Preheat the oven to 350˚F. Grease
a baking sheet.
In a small bowl, whisk together the
egg and water and set aside.
Unfold the pastry on a lightly floured
surface and roll it out to a 14- by
10-inch rectangle. Cut it in half
lengthwise and brush both halves
with the egg and water
mixture. Sprinkle the cheese and
oregano, if using, over one rectangle
and place the other rectangle on top,
egg side down. Roll gently with a
rolling pin to seal. Cut the pastry
crosswise into 26 strips, each about
half an inch wide. Twist the strips
and place them 2 inches apart on the
baking sheet, pressing down the
ends. Brush with the egg and water
mixture and bake in the oven for 10
minutes or until golden.
⁄3 cup cream

½ small bunch fresh chives, chopped
Handful chopped fresh herbs
Pinch salt
Freshly ground black pepper
Soften the cheese with the cream in
a small bowl and whisk in the chives
and herbs. Season with salt and
pepper.

Mississippi for Christmas,” Besh says.
“She’d have little cheese spreads in jars,
which really are heaven.” Besh likes to
take it a step further by gifting jars of his
delightfully simple goat cheese mousse

“In the South, we simply don’t
go anywhere without bringing
something.”
Not everyone is so bold. But
plying your hosts with great
food certainly can’t be held
against you. A homemade dish
is a wonderful gesture, with the
bonus of pleasing palates. We
consulted with foodies to find
out their strategies for Christmas partygoing.
“Giving my friends food
means that when they’re entertaining, they have one less thing
to worry about,” says celebrity
chef John Besh, whose new book,
Cooking From the Heart, has a
whole section on the kinds of
pâtés he likes to dazzle his friends
with (lucky friends!). The goal? To
give something the hosts can use
in subsequent days to feed drop-in
guests or family staying over.
“I always have puff pastry,”
says Irish author, restaurateur, chef and TV personality
Clodagh McKenna, author
of Clodagh’s Kitchen Diaries,
who likes to turn the easy-towork-with, premade dough
into little quick treats, such
as Parmesan cheese straws
(recipe at right).
SPREAD THE CHEER.

says Villas. “People
just beg me to give
them my peachplum jelly, but I’m
very picky about
who gets one.”
1 teaspoon dried oregano
leaves (optional)
1 cup (about 8 ounces) fresh
goat cheese
Preheat the oven to 350˚F. Grease
a baking sheet.
In a small bowl, whisk together the
egg and water and set aside.
Unfold the pastry on a lightly floured
surface and roll it out to a 14- by
10-inch rectangle. Cut it in half
lengthwise and brush both halves
with the egg and water
mixture. Sprinkle the cheese and
oregano, if using, over one rectangle
and place the other rectangle on top,
egg side down. Roll gently with a
rolling pin to seal. Cut the pastry
crosswise into 26 strips, each about
half an inch wide. Twist the strips
and place them 2 inches apart on the
baking sheet, pressing down the
ends. Brush with the egg and water
mixture and bake in the oven for 10
minutes or until golden.

Handful chopped fresh herbs
Pinch salt
Freshly ground black pepper
Soften the cheese with the cream in
a small bowl and whisk in the chives
and herbs. Season with salt and
pepper.

Set aside 1 Tb. of graham cracker
crumbs for the topping. Add the
rest of the crumbs to a medium
bowl, pour in the melted butter
and stir with a fork until well
mixed. Press the crust into the
bottom and sides of a 9-inch pie
dish. Let it chill in the refrigerator
while preparing the filling.
Pour the condensed milk and
evaporated milk into a blender, and
mix on low for 2 minutes until tiny
air bubbles can be seen along the
edges. Add the lime zest and blend
briefly. The next part is where the
magic happens. With the blender
running on medium-low, pour in
the lime juice through the hole in
the lid in a slow, thin stream. The
acidity of the lime juice will cause
the mixture to thicken about
halfway through. Mix just until
incorporated, increasing the
blender speed if necessary. Do not
overblend or it will thin out. Pour
the lime filling into the crust,
spreading evenly. Sprinkle the
remaining cookie crumbs over the
top. Freeze for 3 to 4 hours before
serving.
The flavor and texture of this pie
are best enjoyed before the filling
reaches Popsicle consistency. If you
make the pie ahead of time and it
freezes solid, let it sit out for 20
minutes to soften before serving.

stick to your normal routine.
Plan ahead. Set aside specific days to shop or bake; think
about your holiday dinner menu and make a grocery list; buy
extra hostess gifts so you’re
prepared for parties — all
practical ideas that help prevent the late scramble or frantic store run, which can add an
insane (and unnecessary)
amount of stress.
Take a breather. It’s easy to
get swept up in the frenzy, trying to be everything to everyone. Remember you are only
one person and you need to
take care of yourself, too.
Spending even just 15 minutes alone, without distractions, may be enough to re-
charge your battery. Take a
walk, listen to soothing music,
get a massage — whatever
helps calm and clear your mind.
Be mindful of your
feelings. If you experience a
number of more severe symptoms — such as persistent unhappiness or hopelessness; losing interest in activities you
used to love; changes in appetite, sex drive or sleep; trouble
concentrating or lack of energy
