Non-Vacancy Specific Recruitment Efforts During Reporting Period Internship Program for College Students - WXYZ-TV's internship program is a year round, in depth, hands-on opportunity for college juniors, seniors and graduate students designed to expand the student's knowledge of television broadcasting. Internships are available in all aspects of news production, including newsroom, sports, programming, promotions, graphics, sales and research. Students receive credit for their participation in the program and are evaluated by the assigned department at completion. During this reporting period, 16 students interned at the Station. Job Shadows/Tours - Six high school students and seven college students job shadowed at the Station during this reporting period. The students were allowed an in-depth experience of the types of career opportunities available in the broadcasting field. Students observed the news department and spoke with newsroom personnel about careers available in the broadcasting industry. Students were taken on a tour of the station and spoke to various station personnel about career opportunities in broadcasting. Fourteen organizations toured the station during this reporting period. Station personnel spoke to these organizations about their careers and types of positions available in the broadcasting industry. Seth Myers, Director of New Media, sits on the Advisory Board for the Digital Media program at the Specs Howard School of Media Arts. The Advisory Board reviews the plans and curriculum of this new program at the school to ensure that students are learning skills that are in line with the needs of employers. August 10-13, 2011 - Asian American Journalist Association National Convention - WXYZ-TV personnel participated in various activities througout the convention. Ann Mull, Special Projects Executive Producer, was a panelist on the session "Multiplatform IV: From Print to Broadcasting". News Anchor Stephen Clark sat on the panel "10th Anniversary of 9/11", and Seth Myers, Director of New Media, sat on "The Future of Media" panel. WXYZ as a sponsor, was the training and production site for "Voices", the Convention News Project. Twenty college students and twenty professional staff produced news broadcasts for the convention to highlight news about the area during the convention. WXYZ was the backdrop for their studio work and student training sessions. August 11-12, 2011 - Asian American Journalist Association Career Expo - WXYZ-TV personnel and Scripps recruiting personnel attended the career expo during the AAJA National Convention. Students spoke to station personnel about careers in television and newspapers and their work was viewed and critiqued by various newsroom staff. Attendees were provided a list of open positions for all Scripps newspaper and television locations. August 18, 2011 - Detroit Chapter of the National Association of Black Journalist Monthly Meeting - Ed Fernandez, Vice President/ General Manager, was the main speaker at the meeting. He spoke to the group about trends he sees in the broadcasting industry, the importance of diversity in the media, and WXYZ's Detroit 2020 initiative. EEO PUBLIC FILE REPORT III. The students are in a television news production and producing program at the school. Matt spoke to the students about his career as a television production news director. Approximately 10 students were in attendance. October 20, 2011 Michigan Association of Broadcasters Foundation (MABF) Regional Career Expo - Debbie Suminski, Human Resources Manager, attended the MABF Regional Career and Networking Fair at the Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts located in Southfield, Michigan. Interested candidates inquired about current open positions at the station. Internship information was distributed to students seeking a broadcasting internship. October 23, 2011 - Chuck Stokes, Community Affairs and Public Services Dirctor, spoke to a Detroit group "Live Ladies Literature" about broadcasting careers and the television business. He also spoke about how he had decided to get into the broadcasting business January 16, 2012 - Walled Lake Northern High School Martin Luther King Day - News Anchor Stephen Clark to a group of students, faculty and parents about WXYZ-TV's Detroit 2020 initiative. He also spoke about his career as a television news anchor. January 26, 2012 - Matt Bellehumeur, Director, attended career night at Keppen Elementary school in Lincoln Park. He spoke to the students about his career as a television production news director. Approximately 40 students and parents were in attendance. February 7, 2012 - Wayne State University School of Journalism - News Anchor Vic Faust attended a broadcasting forum discussing careers in television broadcasting and speaking to students about his broadcasting career. February 17, 2012 - Plymouth Christian Academy Career Day - News Anchor Vic Faust spoke to students about careers in television broadcasting and answered student questions. February 27, 2012 - Ed Fernandez, Vice President/General Manager, spoke to a group of forty five students at the Detroit Cristo Rey High School. Students learned about the various positions available in the television broadcasting industry. The students also learned how news is communicated through on-air, web and social media platforms. Non-Vacancy Specific Recruitment Efforts During Reporting Period 2012 MAB Foundation-WXYZ-TV Scholarship Program - WXYZ-TV participated in the MAB Foundation Scholarship program. The program is open to those students pursuing a career in a broadcast related field. WXYZ-TV ran on air PSA's detailing how to apply for the scholarship as well as posting a PSA on the wxyz.com website. WXYZ awarded a $1,000 scholarship to a junior from Central Michigan University. March 22, 2012 - Kim Craig, Reporter/MMJ, and Nate Penn, Videographer, attended the Best Middle School Career Day. Students Kim and Nate spoke to the students about their careers as a reporter and videographer. April 12, 2012 - Warren Woods Pinewood Elementary School Career Day - Sports Anchor, Tom Leyden, spoke to students about his career as a television Sports Anchor/Reporter. April 12-15, 2012 - 2012 Minority Writers Seminar - Chuck Stokes, Community Affairs and Public Services Director, attended the seminar held in Nashville, TN as a faculty member and taught minority journalists about the "nuts and bolts" of editorial writing and critiqued their editorial writing skills. Mr. Stokes' involvement in this seminar helps these journalists become good candidates for opinion writing positions at newspapers and television broadcast stations throughout the United States. April 18, 2012 - South Lyon High School Career Pathways Day - Matt Bellehumeur spoke to students about his career as a television production news director. Approximately 35 students were in attendance. May 12, 2012 - The Annual Brightest and Best Class of 2012 - The best of the class of 2012 from 256 high schools across metro Detroit attended a luncheon at the station to honor and celebrate their accomplishments. Students were given a tour of the news studio and spoke with station personnel about the broadcasting industry. May 16, 2012 - Adcraft Detroit ADvance Team - Mike Murri, General Sales Manager, and Seth Myers, Director of New Media, hosted a group of advertising professionals. Seth spoke to the students about Digital and Social Media and explained the importance these technologies have with providing the latest information to viewers. Mike spoke to the group about sales and marketing in the new media environment. A tour of the station followed the presentation. WXYZ-TV EEO PSA - WXYZ-TV airs a twice weekly PSA outreaching to the community by providing information to organizations wishing to receive notice of vacancies at the station. This PSA is also posted on the station website.
