Non-Vacancy Specific Recruitment Efforts During Reporting Period Internship Program for College Students - WXYZ-TV's internship program is a year round, in depth, hands-on opportunity for college juniors, seniors and graduate students designed to expand the student's knowledge of television broadcasting. Internships are available in all aspects of news production, including newsroom, sports, programming, promotions, graphics, sales and research. Students receive credit for their participation in the program and are evaluated by the assigned department at completion. During this reporting period, 16 students interned at the Station. Job Shadows/Tours - Eight high school students and nine college students job shadowed at the Station during this reporting period. The students were allowed an in-depth experience of the types of career opportunities available in the broadcasting field. Students observed the news department and spoke with newsroom personnel about careers available in the broadcasting industry. Students were taken on a tour of the station and spoke to various station personnel about career opportunities in broadcasting. Three organizations toured the station during this reporting period. Station personnel spoke to these organizations about their careers and types of positions available in the broadcasting industry. Seth Myers, Director of New Media, sits on the Advisory Board for the Digital Media program at the Specs Howard School of Media Arts. The Advisory Board reviews the plans and curriculum of this new program at the school to ensure that students are learning skills that are in line with the needs of employers. 2010 Wayne State University Journalism Day/Internship Fair - October 13, 2010 - Debbie Suminski, Human Resources Manager, attended the Internship Fair, answered student's questions about careers available at a television station as well as internship opportunities available at WXYZ-TV. About 50 students attended the fair. 2010 Michigan Association of Broadcasters Foundation (MABF) Regional Career Expo - October 14, 2010 - Debbie Suminski, Human Resources Manager attended the MABF Regional Career Exp held at the Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts located in Southfield, Michigan. Interested candidates inquired about current positions at the station. Internship applicants were distributed to interested students seeking an internship in the broadcast field. March 4, 2011 - Chuck Stokes, Director of Public Affairs, and Debbie Suminski, Human Resources Manager, attended the Asian American Journalists Association National Board Reception in Detroit. Discussions about the upcoming Asian American Journalists Conference taking place in Detroit August 10-13 took place. Debbie spoke about resume writing and job interviewing skills. Thirty five college students attended the session. 2011 MAB Foundation-WXYZ-TV Scholarship Program - WXYZ-TV participated in the MAB Foundation Scholarship program. The program is open to those students pursuing a career in a broadcast related field. WXYZ-TV ran on air PSA's detailing how to apply for the scholarship as well as posting a PSA on the wxyz.com website. April 6, 2011 - David Baumann, Creative Services Director, hosted communication students from Lawrence Tech University at the station. Dave spoke to the students about careers in broadcasting and answered student questions. April 28, 2011 - Val Clark, News Reporter, attended the Pierre Toussaint School Career Day. Val spoke to students about her career as a television news reporter and answered student questions. May 2, 2011 - Ed Fernandez, Vice President & General Manager, spoke to the Junior class of Detroit Cristo Rey School. Ed spoke to the students about careers in broadcasting and the importance of obtaining an education and the importance of community involvement. May 4, 2011 - Julie Banovic, News Reporter, attended the Bates Academy Career Day. Julie spoke to students about her career as a television news reporter and answered student questions. May 16, 2011 - Senior Project - Carolyn Clifford, News Anchor, hosted a Senior from Southfield Christian School for three weeks. The student was provided a unique insight into the daily operations of a newsroom. She was able to observe the process of producing a daily newscast as well as speak to various newsroom personnel about their careers in broadcasting. EEO PUBLIC FILE REPORT III. Non-Vacancy Specific Recruitment Efforts During Reporting Period May 18, 2011 - Adcraft ADvance Team - Ed Fernandez, Vice President & General Manager, Mike Murri, General Sales Manager, and Seth Myers, Director of New Media, hosted a group of advertise ring students. Seth spoke to the students about Digital and Social Media and explained the importance these technologies have with providing the latest information to viewers. Mike spoke to the students about sales and marketing in the new media environment. Ed gave a presentation on the WXYZ-TV's Detroit 2020 initiative. Students were given the opportunity to ask questions followed with a tour of the station. WXYZ-TV EEO PSA - WXYZ-TV airs a twice weekly PSA outreaching to the community by providing information to organizations wishing to receive notice of vacancies at the station.
