President’s Message
Hello Dear AJA 50+ Members,
This year has been an exciting and productive one for
AJA 50+. Our membership has grown. Our programs
have been wonderfully diverse and we have had the
highest participation rate in our history.
We welcomed new members and celebrated our many
volunteers. Fundraising events were hugely successful.
We achieved the goal of adding to our coffers,
gathering together as community and sharing common
interests, which was very exciting to see.
I would like to thank outgoing board members, AC Dolgin, Mel Massey and Howard
Strauss for their contributions and commitment to AJA 50+; vice presidents
Sophie Kohn Kaminsky and Maurice Klein who assumed charge while I was caring
for my mother; Flo Morgan whose continued dedication as our registrar is
appreciated day after day and year after year. A very special thank you to
Annette Paquin, who ensures the smooth daily operation of the organization, has
an amazing corporate memory, shares her insights and SO much more.
Welcome to Gail Krochmalnick and Irene Shanefield who have joined the Board. I
look forward to working with them and ALL returning, enthusiastic and dynamic
members of the Board of Directors.
As I write the summer days are slowly shortening while the sun’s rays continue to
radiate heat and brilliance. Grab your coffee or tea and head to your favourite
chair. The fall program guide is once again jam-packed with enticing events and

Rocks From the Sky
For hundreds of years, humans have gazed up into the night sky at shooting stars.

even impact the surface of our planet, causing a crater.
Howard Simkover, who has lectured and produced shows for Montreal’s Dow
Planetarium, will share his experiences and knowledge of meteors and meteorites.

have been scraped clean of soil by glacial action. At this time of year
we will look for the south bound migrant birds. Good walking shoes
are highly recommended for this walk which can be uneven in places. Bring binoculars,

Public Art Walking Tour- Wellington Street West
Explore the artwork "The Wellington Marbles" in an engaging walking
tour with the artist Marcus Kucey-Jones. Eighteen hand-carved
marble sculptures are installed at intervals along Wellington Street
West. Each sculpture playfully captures the form of a fire hydrant
fused with everyday objects such as local foods, artistic tools and
musical instruments. The artists, Marcus Kucey-Jones and Ryan
Lotecki chose the fire hydrant because it is an object found in many
communities that connects people in an uncelebrated yet vital manner.
The hydrants and their coupled forms present the viewer with a sense
of humour, playfulness, and culturally reference the area.

Japanese woodblock prints, Inuit prints from Cape Dorset and Baker
Lake, and Aboriginal prints from British Columbia. The tour will also be
an opportunity to see how photographs that record personal travel
experiences can be used to create mini galleries in your own home.
