You don’t have a résumé (yet) but your first task is to develop a professional, business-like letter in which you introduce yourself to prospective employers, and attempt to determine if they would like to open a dialogue or encourage you to submit a more formal application. If you haven’t done so already, read Windows 8 Chapter 1 in your textbook. In it, you are instructed how to download Student Files from the site www.pearsonhighered.com/go . For this section, make sure you download the Windows 8 Bell Orchid files. In the Bell Orchid files, under corporate/accounting, you will find a file entitled CO_AC_Report_Shareholders. Open and read this file; it describes a hotel which has been recently purchased, and how the acquisition has been performing. You decide that you are interested in working there. Your first task is to develop a letter of introduction to management, hopefully leading to an actual application or submission of a resume. So try to include at least the following (plus anything else that is appropriate): Name Education Brief personal background as you think appropriate Brief work history Knowledge of or inquiries about the hotel industry Knowledge of or inquiries about the Bell Orchid and opportunities there Request to submit additional/formal information Request for specific contact information Make sure that you have read and understand all of Windows 8 Chapter 1 and continue your reading with the Introduction to MS Word and Word Chapters 1 and 2. You have received a very generic letter, however, so you need more information. If you go back to the Bell Orchid files, browse through the CO_HR_Newsletter file to confirm the name of a suitable contact in the HR Department and to gain some information about the company. If you haven’t done so already, read Word Chapters 1 and 2 in your textbook. In it, you are instructed how to use a predesigned Microsoft template to create a professional resume. Use these examples to create a polished, professional resume that you are proud to submit. After completing this resume, continue your reading with Word Chapter 3. The first step is to watch the Power Point presentation to be found in the Corporate Human_Resources folder. After you have viewed that presentation, you are taken to meet your new supervisor, Jamie Bernard. Initially, you will be working in the HR Department as you learn the hospitality business. Ms. Bernard would like you to create a set of mailing labels for a specific group of employees. Their names and addresses are in an Excel spreadsheet found in the Corporate Information_Technology folder. Using this data, create a set of correctly formatted mailing labels (on paper) and continue your reading with the introduction to MS Excel and Excel Chapters 1 and 2. Now that you have seen a spreadsheet, and hopefully been able to correctly extract data from it, it is time to add to your Excel skills. Make a copy of the same spreadsheet that you used in Word assignment 3, and name it Address_List_Salary, keeping it in the same folder. In column H, create a realistic job title for each employee, keeping in mind that this business is a high-end hotel. In column I, for each employee, enter H or M, to indicate if the salary will be hourly or monthly. In column J, enter a salary for each employee. Hourly salaries range from $15.00 to $50.00. Monthly salaries range from $3000.00 to $9000.00. Try to make the salaries indicative of what you think the salary would be for the job title in column H. In column K, create a formula which will calculate the annual salary for each employee. For monthly staff, it will be salary*12; for hourly, it will be salary*2000. We are going to continue to enhance the spreadsheet that you updated in Assignment #1, so open the file that you saved from the last class. Make sure that: In column H, create a realistic job title for each employee, keeping in mind that this business is a high-end hotel. In column I, for each employee, enter H or M, to indicate if the salary will be hourly or monthly. In column J, enter a salary for each employee. Hourly salaries range from $15.00 to $50.00. Monthly salaries range from $3000.00 to $9000.00. Try to make the salaries indicative of what you think the salary would be for the job title in column H. Now remove all of the formulas that you previously entered in column K. In column K, create a formula which will calculate the annual salary for each employee, but this time it is to be based on the contents of column I. Look at the IF function and follow this logic example: o If I2=”M” multiply J2*12 otherwise multiply J2*2000. When this formula is working, make sure to copy it down from K2 through K42. Now, to prevent erroneous data entry, we need to do data validation on the I column to make sure that only H or M are entered, andf that incorrect entry produces an error message. o Hint: Look at the data tab, select the entire column, and create some type of validation criteria which will restrict input. As always, there are several ways to accomplish this, some might be preferable to others. Make sure all of your calcs are correct, columns have been sized if needed and that you have given each of the new columns a descriptive heading in Row 1. Save and print your file. She has a request from Operations to clean up a spreadsheet that was developed incorrectly by a previous employee. For this, go to the Corporate Operations folder. Open the file: CO_OP_Housekeeping_Analysis and make a copy by saving it as CO_OP_Housekeeping_Analysis_Improved. There are no formulas in this spreadsheet; so this spreadsheet needs to be a little “smarter”. Clear the contents of b12-h14 and i8-i11. Cells b12-h12 should use the AVERAGE function to calculate the average of the columns above. Cells b13-h13 should use the MAX function to determine the highest value in the columns above. Cells b14-h14 should use the MIN function to determine the lowest value in the columns above. In cells i8-i11 use Auto Sum and the auto-fill handle to create totals for the rows to the left. Using these totals (i8-i10), create a 3d pie chart in which each “slice” of the pie is correctly labeled; Deluxe, Suites, Standard. You should get these labels from the first column, do not enter them manually. The chart should reside on the original worksheet. The first one involves the spreadsheet that you updated in Excel Assignment #2. Open the file: Address_List_Salary and keep it handy as a reference. The first step is to create a blank Access database, naming it Corporate_Contacts Create a table which basically replicates all of the columns in the spreadsheet as fields in the table. Name it simply Contacts. The first field you create should be the primary key field; name it Contact_ID and designate it as an auto-number field. The rest of the fields should be set up and named as follows: FirstName, 15 characters, text LastName, 20 characters, text Address, 25 characters, text City, 20 characters, text State, 2 characters, text, all caps Zipcode, 10 characters, text, using standard input mask Phonenbr, 13 characters, text, using standard input mask. Title, 20 characters, text Freq, 1 character, text Salary, numeric, 2 decimal places Once the table is designed and built, you need to populate it so that the table data is identical to that in the spreadsheet. You can “brute force” this job by typing it all in, but there are better methods available. Make sure all of your data matches precisely, then save the database and print your table. This involves further modifications to the database you created in Access Assignment 1. Open the database: Corporate_Contacts. Create a new table, name it Contact_Children and save it. Create a primary key field, naming it Contract_Children_ID The rest of the fields should be set up and named as follows: FirstName, 15 characters, text LastName, 20 characters, text Address, 25 characters, text City, 20 characters, text State, 2 characters, text, all caps Zipcode, 10 characters, text, using standard input mask Relationship, 10 characters, text Contact_ID, numeric. This is important! It will be used to relate this table to the original Contacts table. Create the relationship between the Contacts Contact_ID field and the Contact_Children Contact_ID fields. Populate the new table by picking out 10 Contacts, typing in at least 30 children and relating them correctly to the 10 Contacts you selected. Make sure 1 of your contacts has at least 5 children! Using the most recent version of database you created in Access Assignment 2, create a paper report as follows: Open the database: Corporate_Contacts. Create a new report, using the wizard (or not) as you prefer. It should print in alphabetical order by last name. The detail line for each employee should contain the following: Contact_ID, LastName, FirstName, Address, City, State, Zipcode, Underneath the detail line an additional line should appear for each child linked to the above contact (if any; if none there should be no line printed). This line should be indented and contain the following: Contact_Children_ID, LastName, FirstName, Make sure all of your data makes sense, then save the database and print your report. Ms. Bernard is thrilled because she has some pet projects for you to work on! The first one centers on an orientation presentation that you viewed when you were first hired. It needs some modernization, as it hasn’t been changed in many years. So make it “your own” by looking at the following requirements: Open the file : CO_HR_New_Employee_Presentation On Slide 2, add 4 indented bullet points in which you provide some detail describing exemplary customer service, such as “motivated” , “professional” etc. On Slide 3, add a reference to paid maternity leave. On Slide 5, add a reference to Obamacare (ACA) as an option. On Slide 6, under tuition, list 3 local colleges. Slide 7 is not very attractive; make it appealing. Add a picture of the restaurant, as a suggestion. Change the transitions from slide to slide to something more dynamic. Change the overall theme to something more attractive; make sure each slide is correct and readable, with no errors. Review your presentation, save the file as CO_HR_New_Employee_Presentation2.
