MATH 20 - PREALGEBRA FALL 2011 Instructor: Mrs. Yolande Petersen Text: Prealgebra, Third Edition by Tom Carson Office Hours: By appointment Website: peterseny.faculty.mjc.edu (this is not e-mail and cannot be used to contact me) E-mail: peterseny@mjc.edu (best way to contact – checked daily, except Sundays) Phone: 575-6500 X 8256 (poor way to contact – checked weekly or less) PREREQUISITE: Math 10 or qualification by MJC assessment. HOMEWORK: One day's work is considered one homework assignment (may be 3 or more sections) and should be stapled into one packet. Homework is collected every class period (except exam days). Any assignments that are handed at times different (earlier or later) from the rest of the class but on the due date are considered "irregular" and will receive a 1-point deduction. LATE HOMEWORK (past the due date) WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED FOR ANY REASON. Your lowest 4 homeworks will be "excused", and replaced with the remaining average, to cover absences and emergencies. Each homework assignment is worth 10 points and will include 10 randomly-chosen problems. Occasional pop quizzes may be given and will be treated as extra homework scores. A missed quiz may be counted as a replaced homework score, but cannot be made up. EXAMS: There will be 5 regular exams which are graded on a straight percentage but which may be scaled, depending on the difficulty of the exam. Exams will never be scaled downward. The scaled scores will be assigned the grades: A = 90-100%, B = 80-89.9%, C = 70 - 79.9%, D = 60 - 69.9%, F = 0 – 59.9. If you miss an exam, it will be "excused" (i.e., you don't have to take it) and replaced with your final exam grade. Because supervised testing is no longer available at MJC, no make-up exams will be given unless further notice is given. If you don't miss any exams, you may replace your lowest exam with your final exam grade, unless the final is lower than your lowest exam. GRADING: The various parts of your grade will be weighted as follows: Homework (with lowest 4 replaced) Exams Final Exam 25% 50% 25% EXPECTATIONS FOR SUCCESS: Students are expected to spend 5 hours/week in class and approximately 10 hours/week outside of class on homework, studying for exams, and other preparation for this class. If you do not have the time available, it is recommended that you take this class a different semester when you have the time to perform at your best. PARTICIPATION: Students who miss 5 or more classes may possibly be dropped for non-participation. Your daily homework paper is your record of participation, so if you haven't completed the homework, submit a sheet of paper with your name to verify that you are still actively involved in the class. If you need to miss 5 or more classes for valid, documented reasons (jury duty, long-term illness, military service), contact me. LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon completing the course, students will be able to perform calculations and manipulation of variables using integers (positive and negative numbers), fractions, decimals, proportions and percentages, as well as solving and graphing linear equations. For a detailed list of course objectives, see my website: http://peterseny.faculty.mjc.edu/math20.html CLASSROOM GUIDELINES 1. The learning of the whole class comes first. Questions directed to the instructor so the whole class can hear are welcome. However, any talking while the instructor is talking is very distracting (even talking about math). Cell phones, including texting, are also distracting. Those who repeatedly engage in disruptive behavior will be given a written warning, then dismissed in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct (printed in the Schedule of Classes). All electronic devices should be silent and stored away, out of sight. 2. Every class period is important. You are responsible for all material covered and all announcements made in class, even if you are absent. "I didn't know because I wasn't there" is not a valid excuse for missing tests, homework assignments, or extra credit opportunities. 3. The syllabus is the final word on your grade and other administrative issues. The syllabus provides flexibility for emergencies such as illness, car trouble, accidentally leaving homework at home, etc. by allowing excused homework/quizzes and one excused exam. However, do not expect exceptions to be made from the syllabus policies. 4. The student is expected to take the initiative in completing course requirements. If you are absent/non-participatory for 5 or more class periods (demonstrated by failure to submit homework), the instructor reserves the right to drop you from the class. However, the instructor does not guarantee that you will be dropped if you stop attending -- if you are not satisfied with your progress in the class, you must drop yourself. In the case of verifiable excuses beyond the student's control (jury duty, medical reasons, military service), accommodation may be made if there are 5 or more absences, but the student must contact the instructor for any special arrangements. You do not need to contact the instructor for occasional absences (4 or less throughout the semester). 5. Cheating will not be tolerated. Outside assistance (written materials, tutors) is permitted for homework. However, use of any materials beyond what is explicitly permitted during exams or quizzes constitutes cheating. This includes books and notes beyond the allotted card(s), as well as human or other resources inside or outside the class. Cell phones, calculators, and other portable electronic devices may not be used for any reason during tests. The first incidence of cheating will result in an automatic zero for that test or assignment, and that score cannot be dropped. A second incidence of cheating will result in an "F" for the course. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I understand and agree to accept the consequences of the points outlined above and in the syllabus. In particular, I understand that engaging in private conversation and use of electronic devices (including texting) are unacceptable classroom behavior.
