Page 2 Challenger 1 Cadet Squadron Introduction to Military Justice: 05 March 2011 On 05 March 2011, Challenger 1 Cadet Squadron hosted an Introduction to Military Justice training session. Cadets from Challenger 1 as well as participants from the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps, and the Fairfax County Police Department Explorer Program learned about the military justice system from guest speakers and a case study of Miranda v. Arizona. The instructors and speakers for this event began with Mr. Steven Lucas, Clerk of the Court for the United States Air Force Court of Criminal Appeals, who gave the participants an overview of the military justice system and general military trial proceedings. Following Mr. Lucas was Colonel Ronald A. Gregory, a senior appellate military judge for the United States Air Force Court of Criminal Appeals. He taught the attendees about the “replay booth” system of appellate courts and described his experiences as a judge in military trials across the world. Next, Major Deanna Daly, a senior trial counsel for the Air Force Legal Operations Agency, discussed the role of legal researchers and the uniformed nature of military trials. She also informed the trainees about the exciting and interesting careers possible for Air Force lawyers, noting their world travels and constant education. “As a lawyer, this is the kind of thing you live for: when you walk into a courtroom, you just don’t know what’s going to happen.” explained, most defense counsels would describe their jobs as defending the system of military justice rather just than the individual accused. Captain Joseph Kubler, an appellate government counsel for the Air Force Government Trial and Appellate Counsel Division, followed up with an account of the prosecutorial side of things. He explained his job as defending the decisions of lower courts and previously assigned counsel. C/Amn Kevin Corcoran introduces the Civil Air Patrol. Following the talks was a question-and-answer session, during which the participants asked many questions, including an inquiry to Col. Gregory regarding courtsmartial as serious as terror trials. He explained to the cadets, “Bad people and good people alike get the rights of this system because that is what makes this country great: individual liberties.” A representative from each participating group then gave a brief description of their respective organizations: Cadet Airman Corcoran of the Civil Air Patrol, Explorer First Class Lucas of the Fairfax County Police Department Explorer Program, and Seaman Kent of the Henry E. Mooberry Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps.
