PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Our Gallery Director, Bob Hickox, has undergone surgery and will not be available for the next few weeks. Anna Louise
Darden is filling in for him until he is recovered. He can’t have visitors for two weeks, but welcomes your good wishes by
email or phone. We all wish him a speedy recovery!
The annual potluck is August 8th from 6 to 8 p.m. There is a list at the Gallery to sign up so we have an idea of how many will
be attending. Bring your favorite dish to share and enjoy the company of your fellow artists and members. We have a lot
of fun and the food is great!
We’ve had significant attendance at the wine walks and sold some of your art work. The next wine walk is August 1st, the
same day as the show change. Please bring your entries for the Photography/Regular show early in the day, so we can set
up for the wine walk at 1 p.m.
The next general meeting is in September and we hope to see you all there. We’ll be appointing a nominating committee for
the upcoming November election of officers for 2016. If you are interested in holding office, please attend. Vilma Weneck
will not continue as Secretary, so if you can prepare accurate, typed minutes working from a prepared agenda, please
contact me. We are also looking for a new Facebook Coordinator.

SHOW COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
Kara Ferrin will be the judge for the upcoming Photography Show.
Kara Ferrin, a third-generation Nevadan, was born and raised in Carson City with her dad, mom, and older brother. She
graduated from Carson High School in 2000 with an Honors Diploma. While attending Carson High School, she studied both
traditional film as well as digital photography during her sophomore, junior and senior year under the direction of Susan Taylor.
Upon graduation, she was among the first Nevada graduation class to receive the Millennium Scholarship and moved to Reno,
Nevada to attend the University of Nevada. At the University, she studied traditional photography which included not only the
rigorous practice of traditional black & white and floor dark-room photography but also the rich history of photography in
addition to numerous art design courses all under the instruction of Peter Goin. While completing her undergraduate studies,
she worked in countless private and corporate photography portrait studios doing work that ranged from a mere cameracarrying-intern all the way to senior photographer. Moreover, she has celebrated almost 10 years doing free-lance portrait work
under her own direction. The vast majority of Ferrin’s photographic work is focused toward portraits; however, through her 8
years of academic studies and 15 years in the business, she is well versed in many other types of photography. Almost 15 years
after graduating from Carson High School, she just recently returned as the newest photography teacher. Kara still lives in Reno
and is married to a Civil engineer here in Carson and together they have two young boys. Although teaching is new to Ferrin, she
has always had a passion for passing on the knowledge she’s gained from both her academic as well as her business experience in
photography and has high hopes that she can positively influence her students the way she has been so greatly influenced by not
only her mentor and teachers but also the art of photography itself.
Please also see attached to the Newsletter the Gallery Show Schedule, a copy of the new show regulations and an entry form.

TREASURER’S MESSAGE
June Treasurer’s Report
The June 30, 2015 balance shown on the Gallery checking account statement was $3666.38.
June income totaled $1161.15. This included money collected from 3 NAA memberships ($105.00), the Gallery’s share
of sales ($125.64), Judged Summer Show entry and sitting fees ($900.00), and donations ($30.51). Year-to-date income is
$6627.70.
June expenses totaled $1256.12. This included electricity, phone, faxing costs, office and gallery supplies (paper products),
maintenance (light bulbs and batteries), bank fees, website maintenance, artist cash awards, and refreshments
(wine for the Wine Walk and coffee). Year-to-date expenses are $5874.60.
The month’s balance was < $94.97>. With this amount the year-to-date difference is $753.10.
In addition to the above expenses a recurring debit appeared on the June bank statement for $49.99 for
“McAfee Intel Secu”. This was an annual charge for internet security we had been paying. Since we do not have
internet in the Gallery anymore I called and cancelled this contract. We should be reimbursed on our July bank
statement. Also, thank you to Susan Taylor who returned the $150.00 check we gave her for being our Summer Show Judge.
The detailed Treasurer’s Report in spreadsheet format with year-to-date totals is posted on the bulletin board next
to the desk in the Gallery. Deborah Foster

A message from Dorrine Sadilek:
Hi Artists,
I came across these quotes in a book by pastel artist, Richard McKinley, and thought I would pass them on to you.
Linda Townsend and I have taken his workshop, and he is a wonderful teacher with great pearls of wisdom to pass on to
us artists. “For painters it is not merely enough to accurately portray what lies in front of us; we have to arrange and
manipulate the visual elements to create a cohesive outcome.” “Rarely does nature provide the perfect arrangement,
frequently, subtractions, additions, and other alterations will be needed before a composition is arranged well. Keep in
mind: “Just because it’s there doesn’t mean it is good for the painting.”
When I read these quotes I thought of our Landscape Show. This is what we meant by artistic license. Make it better by
adding and subtracting. Evaluate shape, value and color (per Mr. McKinley) and make changes to make a better
painting. Happy Painting!
