This exhibition, drawn from the photographic holdings of the Ella Fontanals-Cisneros Collection, will explore the creative relationship between the camera lens and the construction, production and deconstruction of form; tracing the many and various ways in which form can and has been both produced and undone through the agency of the camera lens. Rather than seeking to trace a lineage or make a chronological survey, the exhibition will bring together contrasting images and bodies of work that look at the question of space and form from within and without, overturning preconceptions about the critical potential of the photographic medium. Photography’s experimental engagement with the formal possibilities of line, light and shadow in the real world will be challenged and re-assessed through the work of post-war conceptual and contemporary artists, who have engaged critically with modernism and its aftermath. Miami Art Museum / MAM 101 West Flagler Street Miami, FL 33130 P: 305.375.3000 www.miamiartmuseum.org Sat 10:00a – 5:00p, Sun 12:00p - 5:00p, Closed Mondays Dec 2, Party on the Plaza - 7:00p – 11:00p (Invitation Only Event) Dec 4, MAM Ball @ Mandarin Oriental - 7:00p (Ticketed Event) Dec 5, Parodi Lecture - 11:00a Susan Rothenberg: Moving in Place Susan Rothenberg’s Moving in Place consists of a select group of 25 paintings ranging from the mid-1970s to the present. Even as Rothenberg’s images have changed radically over the course of her career, certain tendencies have remained constant, reflecting how the artist sees and reconstructs the world through a series of shifting pictorial structures that create a spinning or torquing spatial scenario. The exhibition explores the evolution of this “frozen motion,” as the artist has referred to it, from the early horse paintings such as Cabin Fever (1976), which depicts the simple outline of a horse jumping into action; to her spinning and turning figures of the 1980s and early 1990s, such as Folded Buddha (1987–88) and Pin Wheel (1988); to the action scenes that emerged shortly after she moved to a ranch in Galisteo, New Mexico, such as Dogs Killing Rabbit (1991–92) and Accident #2 (1993–94); to her most recent series of disembodied hands and arms swinging around the space of the paintings like dismembered marionettes. Robert Rauschenberg Focus Gallery: Between Here and There BETWEEN HERE AND THERE focuses on the cultures of the Atlantic Rim—the Americas, Europe and Africa—from which the vast majority of Miami residents hail. Included within this broader framework will be the work of a number of artists residing in South Florida, many of whom are paradigms of this intercultural dialogue. BETWEEN HERE AND THERE opened a remarkable installation by Tomás Saraceno, the Argentine representative to this year’s Venice Biennale. Galaxies Forming Along Filaments, Like Droplets Along the Strands of a Spider’s Web, 2008, is the prototype for Saraceno’s Venice installation; it was purchased last year by MAM’s Collectors Council and is being displayed at Miami Art Museum for the first time. The installation will be the initial offering in the Anchor Gallery, a space that will feature regularly changing presentations of large-scale works from the collection.
