Supporting Disadvantaged Young People in Rural Areas
into Employment, Education and Training
Tomorrow’s People launch The Works! A 10 week programme which
runs four times a year and aims to transform the prospects of
disadvantaged young people in isolated rural communities.
The programme prepares young people for employment and encourages the local business
community to support them in volunteering activity, work experience placements and
ultimately, paid employment.
Young people attend in groups of up to 14 from 9am to 1pm Monday to Friday and undertake a
mix of soft skills development such as personal and social skills, confidence and motivation,
alongside specific employability skills (such as CV and interview skills) and basic skills (as
necessary).
By working in a flexible way with young people they aim to address individual
needs, goals and barriers to success. They will support young people, both on
the programme and after on a 1:1 basis for as long as it takes to place the
young people into a positive destination.
All travel expenses will be reimbursed and young people will also receive
a further £30 per week in expenses (to cover phone top ups, clothes for
interviews, newspapers etc.) to ensure that they are able to access volunteering and
employment opportunities.
Running this programme is a dedicated team of three, each with industry specific knowledge.
Criteria
Recruitment for this programme will be primarily from Amble, Warkworth, Hadston,
Widdrington and Lynemouth but applications, referrals and recommendations from outside of
these areas will be considered on a case by case basis.
Applicants must be between 16 and 24 years old and not in education, employment or training.
Furthermore they must be interested in moving forward and be willing participants.
Recruitment will be an on-going process and Tomorrow’s People will meet with any young
people who would like to discuss what they do without making a commitment in the first
instance.
