Special thanks to the volunteer photographers who contributed their time and effort from this year’s Senior Olympics. Bill Boyce Dennis McCarthy Susan Pittman Carol Schlueter I so enjoyed another great year of exciting St. Louis Senior Olympics competition and more important, the opportunity to reconnect with such dear and loyal friends. It was wonderful to see so many of you enjoying your sport and each other. Kudos to Phil Ruben on his first year as Director of the St. Louis Senior Olympics. He did an outstanding job. Over the next year, please visit him at the JCC and let him know what you enjoyed the most about the games and where we can improve for next year. Also, feel free to bring or send a list of friends who are eligible and might want to compete. Let me also take this opportunity to thank the hundreds of fabulous volunteers for their efforts and enthusiasm, the generous sponsors for making sure that our games can exist, the JCC staff that so warmly and professionally welcomes us each and every year into the state of the art and beautiful facility, and to all the athletes for their steadfast commitment to the games. Speaking of volunteers and athletes…we lost two of the best in recent months. Lois Grand, a recipient of the Doc Eberhardt Award for her many years of volunteering passed away just days before this year’s games. I had to smile thinking about the gobs and gobs of tuna fish sandwiches she made over the years for opening ceremonies and the hospitality room. And then there was avid swimmer, Robert “Beaver” Blake, also a recipient of the Doc Eberhardt Award. Beaver was one of the first athletes that I met when I was the director. He came into my office and offered his support and he really meant it. Over the years, he and his best buddy Bill Cannon were the two greatest ambassadors that the games could ever ask for. Both Lois and Beaver will be greatly missed by me as they both became dear friends. I know I speak on behalf of all the athletes and volunteers when I say that our hearts go out to their families and friends at this difficult time. With that, I already am looking forward to next year. I want to see everyone at the games in good health and good cheer. My warmest regards, Nancy Weigley 2009 - 2011 Games Chair 2012 Entry Forms will be available in February! Please contact the Senior Olympics Office at 314-442-3279 to update your mailing address or add a friend to the list. A Note from Phil Ruben St. Louis Senior Olympics Director Dear Athletes, Friends & Volunteers, I have been involved with the St. Louis Senior Olympics since I started working at the J more than seven years ago, but this was my first year as Director of the Games. As always, the best part of the event is the camaraderie and friendships that are born, or renewed, each year. MOre than 1,000 athletes from around Missouri, and as far away as Washington, competed in the 32nd Annual Games. Our Opening Ceremonies were graced with the iconic Olympics athlete Jackie Joyner Kersee and Neal E. Boyd, winner of America’s Got Talent, singing the national anthem. But what is always the most moving are the stories the athletes have to tell. Victor Kalk, 79, told us he had waited 32 years to be able to participate in the Senior Olympics with his daughter, Joan Sievert, 50. Together they won a gold medal in Mixed Doubles Bowling. And then there were Robert Hartman, 85, and his son, Michael Hartman, 56, who both won gold medals in their respective age groups for the Softball Distance Throw and silver medals in Softball Accuracy Throw. We hope you will join us next spring and create your own Senior Olympics story. We can’t wait to see you. My very best, Phil Ruben Mary Pat Henehan Receives Helen Stephens Award The Helen Stephens Award, given to an outstanding female Track & Field athlete in honor of and in memory of one of the greatest women track and field athletes of all time, was given to Mary Pat Henehan. Mary Pat has received numerous medals (mostly gold) in Track & Field in events such as, Power Walk, Discus, Javelin and Shotput. Off the track, she has been just as impressive serving on the steering committee, helping plan the Games and making them as good as they can be. Bob Foster Recieves Doc Eberhardt Award Bob Foster, long time volunteer at the St. Louis Senior Olympics and the 2011 recipient of the Doc Eberhardt Award is truly one of the most dedicated individuals that has been involved with the games. Bob has spent countless hours working in the office. His attention to detail and organizational skills helped tremendously in the overall organization of the events and competition. Bob is not only a volunteer but a great athlete and a fierce competitor. On behalf of the volunteers, staff and athletes, kudos to Bob Foster for his dedication to the mission of the St. Louis Senior Olympics. Alvin Wolff will Chair 2012 Senior Olympics We are thrilled to announce that Alvin Wolff will chair the 33rd Annual St. Louis Senior Olympics. Alvin is no stranger to the J or Senior Olympics. In fact, Alvin served on the VERY FIRST Steering Committee for the Games. He has also chaired the Annual J Golf Tournament and served on the Board for multiple terms. In his free time, Alvin loves to play sports and will definitely be competing in the Games.
