He retained the two 22-lap segments for the A-Mods, but instead of paying $2,022 to win the entire thing, he paid $2,022 to win each segment. Kosiski kept the red flag break after the first 22 laps, but after the break was over, the first 22 cars were inverted for segment two. In segment two, Jesse Sobbing came from 21st to finish second — he also finished second in the first segment. Kyle Berck, who finished third in the first segment, charged from his 20th starting position to win the segment and be crowned champion. “We ran second in the first segment to Dylan (Smith),” Sobbing said. “After killing the motor in the second segment, we were able to get back up there and race with Kyle for a couple of laps at the end of the race but couldn’t quite pull it off.” As for Kosiski, he said the changes were good. “We keep making changes to the race in hopes it will continue to get bigger and bigger,” he said. “And the inverting of 22 cars for the second segment seemed to NCAA DIVISION I SCHEDULE Regionals Double Elimination (x-if necessary) Columbia (Mo.) This should add to the growing tradition of the race which, after being moved around on the calendar, seems to have found a home on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. This year’s race is May 25. The other two classes competing in the Clark Memorial will be B-Mods with a feature paying $1,022 to win and Hobby Stocks paying $722 to win. TRACK AND FIELD Husker has double motivation in discus BY JEFF SHELDON WORLD-HERALD CORRESPONDENT LINCOLN — Chad Wright is a big man with similarly sized ambitions in international track and field, but on March 26, he saw he still might have a little way to go to make them come true. Wright, a Nebraska senior who took home the 2012 NCAA championship in the discus as a sophomore, had his best throw of the season of 208 feet, 3 inches at the Texas Relays. Then he watched fellow Jamaican Fedrick Dacres uncork a throw of more than 218 feet — the best toss in the world this year. Wright said he believes he is ranked No. 3 in the discus among Jamaicans, which would give him an inside track to qualifying for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. But first he must meet the Olympic A qualifying standard, which figures to be beyond Wright’s career-best throw of 209-1. Exceeding his personal best this weekend would put Wright closer to reaching his international goal and likely give him the one item missing from his trophy case — a Big Ten discus championship. Wright will take his top ranking within the conference to the Big Ten outdoor meet, which starts Friday in West Lafayette, Indiana. Though Wright did win last year’s Big Ten shot put title, the discus is his preferred event. This is his final chance to shake off what he considers disappointing performances the last two years. “I’ve not thrown as well as I’ve liked and that I was supposed to,” Wright said. “I just didn’t have a good day two years in a row. I just moved on from it. And the funny thing is, the two years in a row I didn’t win, the two guys who won it did not make it out of regionals.” If the Husker men are going to get past favored Wisconsin for the team championship, they’ll likely need big days from the strong throwing tandem of Wright and sophomore Will Lohman, a Boise State transfer. Both Huskers are ranked in the league’s top 10 in the shot put, and Lohman also holds the Big Ten’s sixth-place mark in the hammer throw. Lohman has had an impressive spring after faltering to a 10th-place finish at the Big Ten indoor championships with a throw more than five feet short of his outdoor season best. “If there was anything I could do to get better, I was doing it — whether it was watching more film, reading up on mental training and getting tougher up there,” Lohman said. “I was really wanting to do everything because I feel I belong in the Big Ten. It just comes down to showing it and hitting the marks.” Several other Husker men expect to finish near the top of the podium this weekend. Ricco Hall has the conference’s best time in the 200 (20.70), and Levi Gipson and Cody Rush join Hall among the league leaders in the 400. A combination of those three could run on NU’s 1,600 relay team, currently ranked second in the league. Senior Patrick Raedler won the indoor title in the long jump in March and also has the Big Ten’s best outdoor jump (25-5½). The Husker women figure to make noise in the jumping events this weekend with freshman Tierra Williams holding the Big Ten’s best mark in the long jump (20-7) and junior Ellie Ewere with the top seed in the triple jump (44-1¼). Annie Jackson could give Nebraska a shot at sweeping the men’s and women’s discus titles. The senior from Tekamah, Nebraska, leads the Big Ten with a season-best throw of 169-9.
