FIRST THINGS FIRST
WELCOME
FROM THE VICE
CHANCELLOR
As a university, we exist for
our students. We strive to
provide an engaging learning
environment – one which
encourages you to participate,
develop your own opinions and
articulate them.
We embrace a diversity of
people, cultures and ideas,
which will enrich your
experience and equip you
to think for yourself and
make effective and positive
contributions.
We pride ourselves on
providing a supportive
environment where you
can thrive and grow, as you
meet the challenges of your
4
university studies. Student
life is not always easy and
so I encourage you to take
advantage of our extensive
support systems.
An AUT education makes a
real difference. Our students
tell us so, as do the employers
who compete to hire them. So
again, welcome to AUT. I wish
you every success in the year
ahead.

get better grades, and the social life is awesome too
– with lots of opportunities to meet students from

Both have a focus on
providing friendly, caring living

students’ needs. All rooms are
furnished and each bedroom
is telephone-ready and
internet-connected. We also
have an on-site Management

to the wellbeing and security
of all residents, and provide a
variety of social, sporting and
cultural events throughout the
year. Office hours are Monday

HEALTH SERVICES AT
SOUTH CAMPUS
General practitioner services for
South Campus domestic students
Until there is a doctor onsite
at the South Campus, AUT
has made arrangements with
three local general practices
to ensure our South Campus
domestic students have
access to medical services.
When domestic students see
the South Campus nurse,
counsellor or student advisors,
they can be referred to one of
these practices for GP visits. If the student wishes to enrol
with that general practice, the
first three routine consultations
per year will be funded by AUT
as long as the student remains
enrolled both with AUT and the
general practice. NZ citizens or
residents can only be enrolled
with one doctor at a time.
Nursing services are not
included as all students can see
the AUT Health, Counselling
and Wellbeing nurse for free
routine nurse consultations at
the clinic room MB109.

UNIVERSITY
CAREER SERVICES
We remember what it was like starting uni for the first
time - new classrooms, lectures, heaps of people you
don’t know - it can be pretty daunting to say the least.
Sometimes a little help from someone who has been
through it all before can make a huge difference.
You’re going to have a blast at uni – but the rest of your life is just
around the corner, and that’s when things really get exciting. To live all
your dreams you will need a career – whatever that may be. University
Career Services can help you figure that out. We offer support and
advice to help students identify clear career and life goals. Our
specialists provide a range of career-related services so that you can
make informed choices about your education and career direction.
Student Ambassadors are
experienced students who
volunteer their time to help
new students at AUT. They are
trained to provide you with
advice, information, direction
and support.

TEN TIPS
FOR SUCCESS
Some of you will have detailed study plans; others might not have
given it much thought. But wherever you’re at, if you follow these
ten tips, you’re likely to have a great first year at AUT.
38
01.
02.
05.
06.
07.
Know what is expected of you
– read your study guides and
course materials and focus on
learning outcomes.
Manage your time – have a
plan and stick to it and give
yourself a day off each week to
do your own thing.
Figure out the best time and
place for you to study; take
regular breaks and reward
yourself.
Visit the Student Learning
Centre – even if your grades
are all good, we can still help
you excel!
Combat procrastination –
break complex tasks down into
smaller ones.
03.
04.
08.
09.
10.
Connect, ask questions, and
introduce yourself – the other
students in your class are new
as well.
Dedicate some time to prepare
before lectures, and after, to
review your notes.
Stay healthy and balanced –
have fun but look after yourself
too.
Get to know your campus –
you’ll get more out of uni if you
feel at home here.
Have fun. Uni is a blast, but it’s
all over pretty quickly – make
the most of it!

AUT SOCIAL MEDIA
DON’T BE AN
EGG ONLINE!
Keep your finger on the pulse.
Get in behind the scenes here:
Sometimes it’s easy
to forget that our
online selves define
who we are just as
much as our real
life interactions
do. Don’t let your
social media
persona get you
into an unpleasant
or embarrassing
situation.

Here are 5 tips for
a trouble-free social
media existence:
• Don’t say anything online
that you wouldn’t say in
a real life situation
• Avoid posting online
when you have been
drinking alcohol
• Don’t react in anger take a break for 15 minutes
and consider your response
• Avoid overly emotional or
vulnerable posts - you may
regret these later on
• Remember that what you put
on the internet stays there
forever
63
DO YOU REMEMBER WHAT
YOU DID LAST NIGHT?
FACEBOOK DOES…
A few drinks with friends
can make for a memorable
night… especially if you
can’t recall what happened!
Excessive drinking is a
problem in New Zealand,
and the habits you form
now are likely to stay with
you in the future. The best
way we can change this
culture is to be mindful of
our own behaviour and
watch out for our friends.
64
Get wise about how much is
too much and the real effects of
alcohol on your body and mind.

AT AUT.
HARASSMENT
AND BULLYING
DON’T.
AUT is a great place to study
and make friends, many
of whom will be with you
for life. We’re proud of our
comfortable, social atmosphere
– it’s a big part of who we are.
This is why at AUT any form of
harassment by anybody, staff
or student, is unacceptable
and taken seriously by the
University.
The AUT Harassment
Prevention Programme
provides support and a range of
options for effectively dealing
with any issues.
If you’re concerned about

harassment, don’t hesitate –
