The President’s Challenge
Plays Key Role in New Program
Through its programs and partnerships with
the public, private, and non-profit sectors, PCFSN
supports initiatives that help people of all ages,
backgrounds, and abilities embrace healthier
lifestyles.
The President’s Challenge
The President’s Challenge is the
premier program of the PCFSN and
is offered through a co-sponsorship
with the Amateur Athletic Union.
In existence since 1966, the President’s
Challenge assists, informs, and inspires people
to achieve an active, healthy lifestyle through
three awards and recognition programs.

The mission of the President’s
U
S,
S P O RT S & N
Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition
(PCFSN) is to educate, engage, and
empower all Americans across the lifespan to adopt
a healthy lifestyle that includes regular physical
activity and good nutrition.
The President’s Challenge fully supports the new
Presidential Youth Fitness Program (PYFP) and is
pleased to continue to provide educators and others
with quality merchandise and awards to recognize
students (and staff) for their efforts in fitness and
physical activity.
The Presidential Youth Fitness Program uses
FITNESSGRAM® as the official program assessment,
placing the focus on health-related fitness instead
of athletic performance (the basis for the Youth
Fitness Test)—and minimizing comparisons between
children. The President’s Challenge Youth Fitness
Test will be phased out and no longer supported
after the 2012–2013 school year. Combined with a
strong professional development program, the PYFP
offers support and direction to educators as they
help students achieve their health goals.
The new PYFP provides a more accurate
picture of students’ general health than the old
performance-based fitness test, representing
a significant change in approach to kids’ physical
fitness. The PYFP fitness evaluation is based on
current scientific findings on health promotion
and lowering disease risk, and offers support and
direction to students as they pursue lifelong health
and fitness goals.
The PYFP was developed and is offered in
partnership by the President’s Council on Fitness,
Sports and Nutrition; the Amateur Athletic Union; the
Cooper Institute; the American Alliance for Health,
Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance; and the
U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Getting Fit with FITNESSGRAM®
Through the Presidential Youth Fitness Program,
all schools have access to the information they
need to conduct the FITNESSGRAM assessment.
FITNESSGRAM measures health-related fitness
through a variety of items designed to assess aerobic
capacity, muscle strength, muscular endurance,
flexibility, and body composition. Each score is
evaluated using the Healthy Fitness Zone® standards.
Item Code #801
$1.75
Students who score in the Healthy Fitness Zone on
five out of the six events can receive the Presidential
Youth Fitness Award.
The Presidential Youth Fitness Program offers
cool new award certificates, digital badges,
medals, and apparel to help students celebrate
their accomplishments, all available through
the President’s Challenge website. You can also
download a free Presidential Youth Fitness Program
school recognition certificate.
Training for Success
Get in the Zone—Today!
The success of the Presidential Youth Fitness
Program depends on how well schools implement
and utilize each of the program components.
Through the program, educators will have access
to the professional development tools needed to
help students achieve their physical activity and
fitness goals.
This school year serves as a time to transition
to the Presidential Youth Fitness Program. The
President’s Challenge Youth Fitness Test will no
longer be supported after the 2012–2013 school
year, and test awards will no longer be available.
(If you choose to use the old test this year, you can
access test standards and related information at
presidentschallenge.org.)

The Presidential Champions Challenge
The Web-based Presidential Champions
Challenge allows users to take as long as they
like to earn their award. And it’s an excellent
next step for those who earn their PALA.
(See the following page for details on the
PALA+ award.)
As with PALA+, users can participate on their
own, or start or join a group. This program enables
individuals to create a little friendly competition—
between classrooms, faculty and staff, or among
the student body. With an unlimited amount of time
to complete the program, schools can encourage a
yearly challenge and recognize the physical activity
achievements of participants at the end of each
school year.
Presidential Champions Awards

For anyone who earns 40,000 points in the
Presidential Champions Challenge.

For anyone who earns 90,000 points in the
Presidential Champions Challenge.
Presidential Champions Gold Award
For anyone who earns 160,000 points in the
Presidential Champions Challenge.
Presidential Champions Certificates (Gold, Silver, Bronze)
(Actual Size: 8" x 10")
It’s Easy
1. Sign up at www.presidentschallenge.org.
2.Get out and do it. Points are based on the
energy expenditure of each activity (its MET—
metabolic equivalent value). So the more
activity or the higher the intensity, the more
points earned.
3.Log it. The program allows users to log their
physical activity as often as they like (even five
minutes counts). Users can also log time for the
previous 14 days.
4.Earn awards. The Presidential Champions
Challenge recognizes achievement at a variety
of levels. Aim for the Bronze award first and
then work toward the Silver and Gold. There’s
also a Platinum level for those who want to
go all the way!
The only thing left to do is outline the dates of your
Challenge and get the word out!

PALA+ promotes physical activity
and good nutrition because it takes both
to lead a healthy lifestyle.
PALA+ supports the goal of the Presidential
Youth Fitness Program—to help your students adopt
and maintain a more active (and healthier) lifestyle!
PALA+ can reinforce healthy habits within an entire
school—not just with the students. Parents, teachers,
and administrators can earn their Presidential
Active Lifestyle Award, too.
Here are the Goals
Adults (that’s anyone aged 18 and older):
Physical Activity. Be active 30 minutes a day, at least
5 days a week, for 6 out of 8 weeks. Or count daily
activity steps using a pedometer (goal: 8,500).
Healthy Eating. Commit to a new healthy eating
goal each week (there are 8 to choose from). See
page 7 for a description of each goal. Every week,
add a new goal while continuing with goals from the
previous week(s). The more often the healthy eating
goals are incorporated, the better
for overall health.
6
Kids and Teens
(that’s anyone between 6 and 17 years):
Physical Activity. Be active 60 minutes a day, at least
5 days a week, for 6 out of 8 weeks. Or, count daily
activity steps using a pedometer (goal: 12,000).
Healthy Eating. Commit to a new healthy
eating goal each week. Every week, add a new
goal while continuing with goals from the previous
week(s).
Starting PALA+ helps you, your colleagues,
and students
• Commit to daily physical activity—and stick
with it.
• Commit to making healthier food choices—one
goal at a time.
• Set realistic goals to encourage fitness and
healthy eating habits for a lifetime.
• Track your progress with our free personal
activity log, which you can access online after
you create an individual account, or by using the
paper log on page 8.
Recognition
This school year, individuals who earn their
PALA+ will be eligible to receive a free certificate
signed by the co-chairs of the President’s Council.
The certificate is available for download from
www.presidentschallenge.org.
