2013 Annual Report TAMARACK GRIEF RESOURCE CENTER Tamarack Grief Resource Center strengthens individuals, families and communities throughout their journey with grief. Connection • Honor & Remembrance • Hope GRIEF SUPPORT & EDUCATION 2013 was a year of both growth and stabilization as Tamarack Grief Resource Center (TGRC) added staff and facilities to expand our ability to serve bereaved individuals, families, and communities. The team is stronger than ever as we’ve welcomed staff and added hours to include more grief counselors, educators, and non-profit leaders committed to high-quality, compassionate, effective programming. We certainly couldn’t do it alone. With the generous support of over 335 donors and more than 3,530 volunteer hours, TGRC served 2,253 participants in grief support and education programs. The decision to serve 18% more children and adults in grief programming was made thoughtfully and deliberately, ensuring our ability to continue to prioritize individual care, quality relationships, and follow-up. Expanding our team of talented personnel coupled with integrating trained volunteers into mentorship roles allowed us to maintain high standards of program quality and integrity while extending our reach. In 2013, TGRC provided a total of 9,027 hours of direct service. You have no idea the impact you’ve had in my life, our lives. “ “ You gave me skills and tools but really you gave me support. The gift you gave created something much bigger. - Program Participant 516 South Orange Street, Missoula, MT 59801 | 406.541.8472 tamarackgrc@live.com | TamarackGriefResourceCenter.org 2013 Major Accomplishments From the EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Today the sun shines through the window and I smell the fresh coffee that will soon offer just a bit of warmth and comfort to the families coming into Tamarack Grief Resource Center—grieving parents of a child who died tragically; a man reeling from the death of his sibling and his parent; a mother grieving her husband’s death by suicide seeking strategies for supporting her children. All face inevitable questions: Who am I in the world without this person? What really matters to me now? How can I best honor this person and move forward? I glance down at the colorful friendship bracelets around my wrist, created by campers grieving the death of a family member. Campers come together for comfort, moments of connection and joy, and time to honor and remember those they have loved and lost. We wear these bracelets as symbols of our shared commitment to offer a bit of hope and strength to one another—a reminder that we are not alone. It is humbling to know that as human beings we need one another so much. TGRC remains committed to strengthening bereaved families, and thankfully, we don’t do it alone. Like the friendship bracelets, the presence of each of our donors and participants is interwoven. Each idea, donation, helping hand, and understanding hug contributes to something larger. Together we create a beautiful tapestry in our communities—a circle of hope and of healing. Each of us is touched by loss in our journey as humans. As you read this, may you feel hope and comfort around you. Together we are stronger. –Tina Barrett, Ed.D, LCPC Expanded grief services by over 18% • Supported, strengthened, and educated 2,253 program participants in 2013 • Hired two Grief Specialists and trained two advanced Mental Health Interns to expand and improve our existing programs and extend our reach throughout western Montana • Provided scholarships or fee waivers for 72% of support program participants Enhanced existing year-round grief support programs • Integrated participant feedback and advanced training opportunities to refine program offerings • Expanded individualized counseling to provide a total of 296 sessions of counseling in the second half of 2013 • Hosted the Suicide Prevention and Support Network Expanded grief trainings and teachings • Trained 1,258 professionals and community members through consultations and trainings at local, regional, and national seminars • Initiated creation of a template outlining grief camp development, implementation and evaluation, as well as volunteer training considerations • Authored “On Grief and Healing: Your journey through loss” and began distribution of 2,000 booklets through the Suicide Prevention and Support Network, The Missoula County Sheriff’s Department, and the Missoula City-County Health Department Looking Ahead to 2014 • Finalize school-based group template with special considerations for supporting bereaved Native American youth.
